CLASS HISTORY These PIGCIOUS Years by Betty Erwm Class Hlstorlan Author s note We wrote the beglnnlng we wrote the mlddle we are wrrtmg the concluslon ACT I Tlme September 1952 Qust after Labor Dayl Settmg East Nashvllle Senlor Hlgh School Mam characters Sophomores Curtaln They stopped just mslde the great glass doors and lool-.ed around l1k lng what they saw Jumors and semors shot past them slammlng doors and callmg to old frlends Sophomores looked at one another and smrled shyly They had come from many dxfferent Junlor hlgh schools but ln th1s strange place they were together It was to be thexr new home away from home and they were uncertam as to how they were gomg to like It For the next three years they would be spendmg most of their days here Soon they were saymg wlth a proud l1lt ln thelr volce Oh I go to EAST Hrgh School They gazed wxth prlde at the scores of cups and pla ques 1n the trophy case Bemg new comers they had to ask a lot of ques tlons that year llke Where IS the remedlal room? Where IS the book room? What 1S the Chrlstmas Concert? Then they were caught by the excltement at the pep meetxngs and the tense feellngs at the football games Few questlons were ever answered ln class on Frldays for v1s1ons of plgSklI1S danced ln thelr heads We made progress that year the glrls flnally found out what Stop the clocl-J means at a game and the boys well some of them anyway learned how to Jltter bug and do the bunny hop We t1pt0ed around corners on the biology classes ln 403 It s a GOOD book MOON MANN and OTTO How odd lt was to see classmates slttlng ln a corner of the cafeterla w1th thelr faces to the wall They were always m0VlHg thelr mouths but no sounds were commg out Thus were the amuslng last mlnute preparations for the speech classes The grand chmax for some of the sophomores was the never to be forgotten tr1p to Pensacola They were plled wlth questlons for the next three weeks after they returned' At the end of the year we almost felt as at ease and as fallllllal' w1th the school as any senror ACT II Tlme A year later Settlng East Hlgh Mam Characters Jumors Jumor year well what drd happen? True some of us had more fun that year than we had or would have all through school There was more talk about school spmt good behavlor IH the audltorlum and not botherlng the salt and pepper shakers ln the cafeterla We were st1ll lmpressed by the sen 1ors but the new sophomores were shghtly awed by us and we began to feel the lmportance of our new posltlon as Jumors The Grapes of Wrath seemed to fall upon us that year Lrtton beat us unmerclfully at the Homecomlng Game some of the Engllsh teachers made us wrlte term papers and our school caught fire rn the lunchroom The Sock Hop the Allred Youth Square Dance and the extremely fine basket ball team helped us on our feet agam Career Day was held 1n whxch some of the more ambltlous Jumors determmed their Lnfe Professlon two or three tlmes The Sprmgtlme brought trlps for the Student Councll representatlves N F L Ensemble Mass Chorus and Track team As the grass turned green and we scattered over the campus the boys played touch' and the glrls made clover stnngs We took more mterest ln the clubs and other school 8Ct1Vlt1eS ln whlch we now held offlces and shared ln the responslbllltles .
