Q fx ,xii 8' 1 Before presenting facts and figures of the past football season, it might be well to point out that the 1951 Eagles, under the leadership of Coach Thomas B. Owen and Assistant Coach Hilary Martin, led the Nashville lnterseholastic League in both offense and defense. In eleven games lfast gained a total of 32-17 yards, 2705 on the ground and 5-12 through the air. The powerful Ifagles were noted mainly for their steady, driving ground attack, which netted a total of 160 first downs. The final game of the regular season against Lawrenceburg saw the offense at its best balance. The ground attack totaled 215 yards and the passing attack 214 yards. The defensive unit looked every bit as good as the offense in action. lt allowed opponents 1519 yards, 1059 on the ground and -162 through the air. Opponents found sustained ground gaining curbed as they gained a total of only 80 first downs for the season. Liast's pass defense was almost as good as the ground defense. 111 passes were attempted by opponents, and 31 were completed. The peak of lfast's defensive effectiveness was reached in the game with Dupont, who were held to a total of -4 yards for the entire game. However, because of the friendly and helpful attitude of older stu- dents, teachers, and Mr. XV. H. Oliver, our principal, our uneasiness soon wore off, and we began to enjoy school as never before. The solemn inauguration services held for student body ofhcers made an indelible impression upon our hearts and minds from the very beginning. VVC were invited to join the various clubs in the school, one of which was the newly organized Fishing Club, sponsored by Miss Vera King. The clubs that had been in existence for several years continued to grow and make known their pur- poses to all the students. The Dramatic Guild presented a delightful show, The Man XVho Came to Din- ner. Each of us looked forward to the numerous succeeding plays, of which Ramshaclcle Inn and Pink String and Sealing VVax proved especially enjoy- able. In both of these presentations, members of our class played leading roles. A Christmas Concert was given by our music department. The annual Christmas Program was held in the auditorium, and all were deeply impressed with the thoughtfulness of East High students in giving approximately fifty-two Christ- mas baskets to needv families. Shortly after returning from the holidays, we watched with wide eyes of amaze- ment the student government campaigns, during which every scheme imaginable was employed to secure votes. NVith the coming of Spring, there arose a whirl of ac- tivities. The T.8tI. Convention met in johnson City, members of the N.F.L. competed in the contests in Clarksville, for the year 1950-51 emerging for the third consecutive year as City N.F.L. champions in the Nashville City League finals. A thrilling basketball sea- son, from which the Eaglettes, our girls, team, emerged Eighth District Champions, was ended. The vocal groups rated superior in the annual contests held in Springfield that year, and the R.O.T.C. unit received an honor rating in the annual Federal inspection. Upon re-entering school in September, We found that dear old East had taken on that new look with fluo- rescent lighting, new filing cabinets, modern chromium kitchens in the home economics room, and an electric score board for the football field. 'K Sophomore Day, which was introduced by the Stu- . dent Council, proved a great success. The Council was also instrumental in the organization of an Inter-City Student Council, of which Ray Bowles was elected president. I innocently took my place behind the wheel of the Driver Training Chevvie and began cruising, over the old driving grounds of East Nashville-around by Tripp's, the pool room, and Pat's. As Coach Martin told me to pull out into Gallatin Speedway, how was I to know that Leon Carter was within a mile of mc? By the time I got the buggie out into the street, I could hear a noise like a ict lighter plane coming near. Smash! Bang! Before I could blink an eye, my car landed in the middle of the street, with Leon's Oldsmo- bile right behind it. Having shed a couple of fen- ders and the motor of my car, I was taken back to school to have the bump on my head bandaged. Limping through the halls to get to the clinic, I finally reached the door and raised my weak hand to knock, As usual, the clinic was locked, so I traveled once again the well-worn path to Mrs. Miller's room. VVith keys dangling in her hands, the Pepsodent smile girl came rushing to my rescue. Soothed by a dose of Hadacol and the clean bandages placed on my head, I was ushered to the cot and told to lie down. In an instant I was going to sleep. with Mrs. Miller's voice in my ears: There, there, you're going to be all right. But instead of dreaming about present-day life, my PROPH ECY dreams shifted to the future-to East High and its former students during the vear 1966. My bags were packed, and I was ready for my journey. A trip to New York is so exciting, espe- cially if it's the first vacation since graduating from East. After calling a cab, I waited patiently until it came to pick me up. As I climbed into the helicopter taxi, whom should I see as the pilot! It was none other than Leonard VVills, a member of the East High graduating class of '51, As we ascended to the housetops, we began chattering about some of the members of our class, and I learned that Willie, himself, had married Norma Smith. The owner of the Moon-rocket Cab Company was Les- lie Burnett, who always did have that pick-up talent, his business managers were Lyman Angela and joe Rittenberry. Don Medley, who had fm- ished his medical course, had now been assigned his first surgical iob-head butcher of A.8tP. I also found that the VV.P.A. had a new executive -Robert Duke was now in charge of the water bovs. His best-liked employee was Buddy Ful- cher, who could now carry five buckets of Water, two in each hand and one balanced on his flat head. Also popular in Nashville was Laurice Shel- ton, who was owner of the Toddle Inn-Waddle Out Restaurant. Waitresses working at this res- taurant. were Lora Mai Robertson, Ann Burton, Lucy Bodily, and Betty jean Phillips. Willie told me that Mary Ann Lyon had taken over the job as head librarian at lfast, Miss Hollins having re- tired. Before I knew it I had reached the depot and was on my way to buy my ticket. A sound of music reached my ears and I realized that Charles Rev- nolds and his band were seeing some of their friends off to the army. Strutting in front were Anna Norton, Martha Ursery, Betty Meeker, and Peggy Roy, the majorettes. Seen leaving were F. E. VValker, joe Binkley, and George Orrand. Escorting them were Sargeants Ralph Youree and Earl VVest, who had earned national fame as two of the most hard-boiled sergeants in the army. Dale Higgins, Mary Anderson, Regina Hicks, and Betty joe Snell were leaving for the VVACS. At this very instant, who should come dashing up to take my bags? XVhy, james Boyd and Byron Blevins, however, they argued so profusely over who would carry the bags that I, growing tired of listening, carried them myself. Struggling with my four suitcases and two trunks, I proceeded to- ward the ticket office to see, staring over the tall counter, Irene Hooper, who was having trouble lddmf up the PIILC of txx o
