The purpose of the GREY EAGLE, the annual of East Nashville High School, is to bring to the senior class a full and accurate account of the activities of their school years, so that they may look back upon them with joy throughout their lives. ln the belief that a picture tells the story of a thousand words, we, the staff, have endeavored to bring to you a true glimpse of our days together. We sincerely hope that you will accept it in the spirit with which it is given, and will enjoy it as much as xxe have enjoyed presenting it to you. . Having endeared himself to students and teachers alike and having made himself not only an adviser and teacher but also a friend and companion to all those with whom he has come in contact, our principal, Mr XY ll Oliver, has chosen the following poem, Task, by Maude Louis Ray, as one of his favorites, appropriately, we think. since it expresses his genial attitude and humble purpose in daily existence and in life itself. To love someone more dearly ev'ry day, To help a wandring child to Find his way, To ponder o'er a noble thought, and pray, And smile when evening falls, This is my task, To follow truth as blind men long for light, To do my best from dawn of day 'till night, To keep my heart fit for His holy sight, And answer when He calls, This is my task. O U R P R I N C I P A L www Jwu, Glam ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Pictured in front of the pictures of the first two principals of East High who did so much to establish the ideals and traditions of the school are johnny Steinhauer, presi- dent of the Alumni Association, and johnnie Martin, secretary-treasurer. jane johnson, vice president, was absent when the picture was made. Under the direction of Mr. Keyes and lwlr. W. P. Fisher, first principals of East High, the Alumni Association was founded in order to bring about a closer relationship between the school and the former graduates of it. Of the 249-1 graduates of the school, today there are approximately I500 in service. When the service flag was dedicated in 1943 it had about 300 blue stars on it. Steadily more have been added, and 37 blue stars have been replaced by gold ones In October, 1944, students, teachers, and alumni of East and Father Ryan High Schools gathered at the annual homecoming game to witness a dedication ceremony at Keyes Stadium. Prior to the East-Ryan game, the service Flag was presented, and representatives of each school stepped forth to dedicate the game to alumni serving in the armed forces. Pictured during the services are Father Elliott of Ryan, Prin- cipal Vf. I-I. Oliver of East, and johnny Steinhauer, representing the East Alumni Association. .ful We4 I RED C,HEST SCML EL COMPTON I ESLIE Du IS V IRGIL DOCKERY C C, FITZGERALD I R INK GLASCOCK L xxx RENCE GOLDSBY FROST GREEK EXERETT GREEN HERBERT W GRIZLARD ALEX HAMRIC GEORGE HOFFMAN JACK I-IL RST JIMES Vv I-ILRT I ACK J AMISOS1 KENNETH KFRKFIBS How XRD KIRK JOHN! Baker, the football team marched to a very successful season, winning seven games, while losing only three. For the second consecutive year, the Eagles were sparked to victory by the peppy playing, and calling of plays, of Captain Tom Keysaer. The Red and Gray met with three defeats in the first four starts, losing to West in the opener, then to Litton and T. I. S. after a temporary respite in the 20-0 conquest over Howard. After these first four clashes, however, the East gridders bounced back, and steadily improved, to complete the season with six straight wins. The Red and Gray gradually became the most impressive and colorful grid com- bination in the city, carving out such dicisive victories as the 19-0 win over Cohn, 19-0 over North, and 26-0 over du Pont. The season was brought to a fitting climax, when, in the final tilt of the year, the Eagles rolled over Montgomery Bell Academy, rated the second- seeded team in the state. wwf was :qgx-aw xx -mfg, f ffwW ACTION BY THE CAGE SQUAD Sboxxn on tlwis page are pictures of tbc Eagle baslactball team, and others of the Red and Grey in action.
