One ofthe most interesting phases of the de- partment is thc French Class. The school has given the language class two tape recorders which the students are finding amusing, helpful, and necessary. To learn French, it is vital that one be able to pronounce words as near- ly correct as possible. The new recorders are helpful in this field nf learning. The department also has eight earphones. With these, the stu- da-nts can hear a sentence pro- nounced correctly and then re- pc-zit it. There are thirty-two dif- ferc-nt tapes which the students may hear, Those tapes have books to follow up the record- ings. The department has just re- ceived a new Bell and Howell tape recorder. This unique re- corder is useful because one is able to hear and record on the sarne tape. Many French records have been given to the class also. The students now have a varie- ty of facilities in their classes, a variety which makes studying French more interesting. Parents Attend Classes Parents attending the P. T. A. on Thursday November 16, fol- lowed the schedules of a regular school day and visited the class- mmng of their children. Mem- bers of the Future Teachers' Club and other students acted as guides and directed the parents into the classrooms for a ten minute period. l'1l 9 A f1I Art Editorg Nancy Hurley, Sports Editorg Sue McLeod, I t up a balloon on November 3, when Mr. J. P. Wright, teacher, show- ed the classes how to fill the bal- loons with hydrogen, which is made from aluminum scraps and sodium -hydroxide Clyel. When the hydrogen fills the balloon it will cause it to rise, 'because it is so light. To each balloon was at- tached a self-addressed envelope. The purpose of this experiment is to see how far the balloon will no and to receive information from any person finding the bal- loon. The next day, November 4, Bobby Morgan made one of his own. Later he received a letter addressed November 5, from a girl in Asheboro, who had found the balloon in a tree, in her back- yard. As yet there is no reply from any of the others. About three years ago Mr, Wright sent one which travelled from South Carolina to Tennes- see, over four-hundred miles. Approximately only six out of forty have been found and have written back. . ...,......,..0-......-...
