fa.: THE AQUILA OF 1962 East MOHtgOm6f!ii i 4 Z AR IT igh School S I 1 is fi Foreword Our first year at East Montgomery has come to a close. This year has been one filled with fun and sorrow, play and hard work. In THE AQUILA, we have tried to preserve some of the fond memories of this school year. East Montgomery is a very fine school and one that anyone should he proud to attend. The atmosphere, surroundings, and student enthusiasm have made this school one of high quality and character. It is our hope that the students of the years following will uphold and grow with the true character of East. It is our wish that they will enjoy the fond memories and the deep influence that we have felt. So, take this annual as a guide down memory lane of that wonderful year, 1962, at East Montgomery High School. One ofthe most interesting phases of the de- partment is thc French Class. The school has given the language class two tape recorders which the students are finding amusing, helpful, and necessary. To learn French, it is vital that one be able to pronounce words as near- ly correct as possible. The new recorders are helpful in this field nf learning. The department also has eight earphones. With these, the stu- da-nts can hear a sentence pro- nounced correctly and then re- pc-zit it. There are thirty-two dif- ferc-nt tapes which the students may hear, Those tapes have books to follow up the record- ings. The department has just re- ceived a new Bell and Howell tape recorder. This unique re- corder is useful because one is able to hear and record on the sarne tape. Many French records have been given to the class also. The students now have a varie- ty of facilities in their classes, a variety which makes studying French more interesting. Parents Attend Classes Parents attending the P. T. A. on Thursday November 16, fol- lowed the schedules of a regular school day and visited the class- mmng of their children. Mem- bers of the Future Teachers' Club and other students acted as guides and directed the parents into the classrooms for a ten minute period. l'1l 9 A f1I Art Editorg Nancy Hurley, Sports Editorg Sue McLeod, I t up a balloon on November 3, when Mr. J. P. Wright, teacher, show- ed the classes how to fill the bal- loons with hydrogen, which is made from aluminum scraps and sodium -hydroxide Clyel. When the hydrogen fills the balloon it will cause it to rise, 'because it is so light. To each balloon was at- tached a self-addressed envelope. The purpose of this experiment is to see how far the balloon will no and to receive information from any person finding the bal- loon. The next day, November 4, Bobby Morgan made one of his own. Later he received a letter addressed November 5, from a girl in Asheboro, who had found the balloon in a tree, in her back- yard. As yet there is no reply from any of the others. About three years ago Mr, Wright sent one which travelled from South Carolina to Tennes- see, over four-hundred miles. Approximately only six out of forty have been found and have written back. . ...,......,..0-......-... New Chairs Arrive Just before the paper went to press, the new maple wood chiairs matching the library tables ar- rived. The chairs complete the furnishings donated by the Lions in honor of Mr. C. G. Buie, Sr. Confused One morning the guidance couns lor found Grady William- son crying in the hall. When she asked him why he was crying, he held out two one-dollar bills and East Celebrates First Homecoming On November 3, East Mont- gomery celebrated its first home- :oming with the crowning of a iomecoming queen, the winning if a ball game, and the marching Jf the band. The night started with a bang when the East Eagles Non victory over the Anson County Eagles 32-0. This set the right spirit for a wonderful iight. The band thrilled its audience is it played. Mr. Wright, direc- ,or, led in a number of beautiful numbers and formations. They ncluded, Entry of the Gladia- .ors March, Stars of the Sum- ner Night in the star formation, 'Moonlight Sonata in the moon 'ormation, Hymn to the Sun, md as a finale The Pieadore March. The next phase of the halftime show featured the selection of :he queen. The four representa- gives from the fofur classes rode around the field, arrayed in beau- Liful gowns. Gay Chappell of the freshman zlass, Laura Stutts of the sopho- nore class, Linda Greene of the Junior class, and Mallie Hancock of the senior class, certainly mys- tified the crowd making the judges decision hard. Laura Stutts, won the title and became the first homecoming queen of East Montgomery High School. After the game the Sociology clames sponsored ia Sock Hop, which every one enjoyed. Saunders Wins Fair Contest Phillip Saunders, 11th grade student, won second place at the North Carolina State Fair with his insect collection. His collec- tion included a Cercropia Moth, a giant waterbug, and Unicon Beetle. The collection will be on dis- play again when he enters it in the National Entomological So- ciety Enohibit sometime in De- cember.
