From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggety beasties And things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us Scottish Prayer

Page 9 text:

We love to be frightened — to be scared bluel That is why we watch horror mov- ies, read scary books and tell spooky stories late at night. Fright is a very desired emotion; if we cannot find it, we create it because we really do need it — all of us. That is why we are really lucky when we discover tailored, made-to-order fright. The Hairy Man gives us that. He has for years and he continues to weave his ghoulish magic and probably will for another hundred years. The frightful, fearful, horrible Hairy Man i we fear him; we love him. He has become as much a part of our scene as Wednesday night movies, Thursday night dates, mid-terms, pool in the student center, pep-rallies, water fights and buddies. We hear about him from the veterans of nights alone at the ' teee ' or in the darkness of the Alamo. People have heard him, seen him, talked with him, run from him, braved him and known him as a personal friend. Who is the Hairy Man ? Legend has it that this fellow, half-man and half-beast, has roamed the woods in this area for years. No one knows why he exists or what it is that he seeks. His insane screams have been heard by dozens of people throughout the years, screams which send chills of ravishing terror down the spine. One prominent citizen of the Scooba community, not known for his vague and inane ramblings, reportedly came face-to-face with the marauding beast in what can only be described as a close encounter of the worst kind. Walking through the woods one day at dusk, this gentleman, a sober-minded, down-to-earth leader of the community, came into a clearing whereupon the following episode was enacted: He was drinking at a stream, down on all-fours, the witness recounted. When he saw me, he straightened up, standing upright. He looked at me and I stared back. For what seemed an eternity, but in reality was only a few seconds, we observed each other. Then he calmly turned and walked rapidly away into the woods like a man. He looked like a man and had a terrible smell about him. He strongly resembled a normal man, especially his eyes . . those eyes. No one can be certain where or when the Hairy Man legend originated. No one can be certain that he even exists. Montaigne said that men are most likely to be- lieve what they least understand. Maybe that is why we believe in this odd fellow who roams about us in the night. We really do want to believe. Even those of us who say we don ' t believe in him don ' t particularly like the idea of being alone on campus or in the woods nearby while thinking about him. So, Hairy Man , if you really are out there, we really do love you. And we fear you and respect you. You have given us that precious feeling that we constantly seek; that feeling that movies are made to exploit, that books are written to awaken, that stories are told around campfires to inspire — that wonderful, exhilirating, knee- knocking fright. For this we gratefully dedicate the 1979-80 edition of the LION to you, our constant and foreboding nemesis.
