RETROSPECT A decade ago Mr. R. A. Harbour accepted the presidency of the East Mississippi Junior College. At the end of that year the LION Staff saluted their new president and commented on several of his characteristics. They mentioned specifically his vision for an enlarged and greater EMJC and his unflagging efforts in making that vision a reality. . . . his unlimited enthusiasm, his integrity of purpose, and his sincere personal interest in the welfare of each student. They noted that in only one year he had brought about gratifying changes in the campus and the curriculum. It seems proper and fitting that this year ' s LION Staff pause to evaluate the opinion of their predecessors of ten years ago. If a member of that yearbook staff should return to the campus today, he would see as he enters under the new arch- way, that the determined efforts of our president have transformed the vision for an enlarged EMJC into a realitv. Not onlv has every building on campus received a complete renovation since his administration began, but the Library and Science Building, the Football Stadium, and the Field House have also been constructed. The streets of the campus have been paved and are lighted at night by new mercury vapor lamps. The most obvious addition on the campus is the 50.000 gallon water tank and the least obvious is the completely new electrical svstem throughout all campus buildings. In keeping with the vision for an expanded and elevated academic program, significant changes have taken place. The classrooms have been modernized; up-to- date audio-visual equipment has been purchased: and an ultramodern language laboratory has been installed. The curriculum has been broadened to embrace addi- tional courses in education, social science, applied science, engineering, mathe- matics, photography, foreign languages, and vocational-technical education. To cor- rect a deficiency and to answer the need of an expanding enrollment, courses in both remedial English and remedial reading have been instituted. In the area of the Fine Arts, new stage curtains and lighting equipment have been added to the facili- ties of the college dramatics program; numerous instruments have been purchased for the band; a beautiful studio and two concert grand pianos also enhance the Department of Music; and courses in art have been reinstituted, with completely new facilities for that department. In the area of communication. EMJC now keeps its constituents abreast of the college ' s activities through the medium of television. On the campus, students are kept informed through the media of a campus-wide public address system and through the recently installed closed-circuit radio station, which offers the students class-re- lated discussions, as well as music and news. Mr. Harbour ' s personal interest in the welfare of each student has been evi- denced by the installation of new dormitory furniture and ceramic tile baths; the Cafeteria and Student Center have been attractively redecorated; and a washateria has been constructed. This interest has embraced not only the physical comfort, but also the academic needs of the students. An orientation program helps freshmen to acclimate themselves to college life; counseling now plays an integral role in guiding students in courses of study and in vocational choices. This resume would only begin to enumerate to a LION Staffer of ten years ago the progressive strides made by our college under the guidance of Mr. Harbour. His unflagging efforts have not been in vain. This indeed has been a decade of progress. We. the 7964 LION Staff, who now can view in retrosp ect the growth and increased prestige of the East Mississippi Junior College, heartily concur with that former LION Staff in their wise estimation of this man. Under his continued leadership we can only predict an even greater East Mississippi Junior College! II
