Humanity has depended upon various media through which to reflect its personalities, its activities, even its dreams and aspira tions. This year Television has come to our state to enable us to have a better, clearer view of our entire world. It is the hope of the LION staff that this yearbook, too, will serve as a reflector — a reflector of this year ' s school events. Our wish is that through the years this book will bring delightful memories as . . . We take a look at ourselves THE STAFF THE LION STAFF We, the members of th e staff, have worked not hours, not days, not weeks, but months to give you the true picture of our years at K.C.A.H.S. and E.MJ.C. Now hear it is Your 1953 LION! We hope you like it. PAT Editor BOB Business Manager Standing: Ouida Hemphill, Bob Langford, Richard Cham- bers, Nancy Lockley, Mrs. Stark, Martha Jo Elliott. Ours was the scholastic honorary society on the campus, but our members had to score high in the kitchen as well as in the registrar ' s office. Remember those Phi Theta Kappa suppers we prepared? Good food made good students of us. Our motto might well have been, Eat, drink, and be merry, for we have worked already! Requirements for membership included good moral character, leadership, and main- tenance of at least a B average in our studies. The E. M. J. C. chapter is a member of the national junior college scholastic honorary organization. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Kemper County Agricultural High School had the largest number of members in 1952-1953 that it has had in the past eight years, and probably the largest in the history of the school chapter. Under the direction of Mr. Amacker, our advisor, this chapter has had a State, a Tri-State, and a second place winner of Southern States in public speaking. It has also had one crops, one dairy, and four livestock teams that won in Council and District Judging and that competed for state honors. GRAY RECORD CROWD FOR EMJC HOMECOMING November 3, 1952 Homecoming Day festivities at the East Mississippi Junior College and Kemper County Agricultural High School were held at Scooba. November 8, 1952 to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of the college. Among the interesting events were the basketball games between the alumni and the regular students, a buffet supper in the dining hall, a meeting of the alumni association at which former students were recognized, the football game between EMJC Lions and Senatobia Rangers in which the Lions triumphed 55-7, and a dance in the college recreational center. Mrs. Christine Jackson of Macon, Mississippi, was elected president of the East Mississippi Junior College Alumni Association. Other officers elected were: D. D. Briggs, of York, Alabama, Vice President and A. J. Oubre, Jr., of Scooba, Secretary and Treasurer. Prior to the football game, Martha Van Bibber was crowned Homecoming Queen by Houston Harrison and was presented a birth- day cake by Roy Simpson, this being the 25th anniversary of the college. Her court was composed of Ouida Hemphill, Peggy Wilson, Betty Jo Steelman, and Nancy Hamilton. The queen and her attendants were seated on a gaily decorated float. During the half time a float having the appearance of a large birthday cake brought upon the field the college drill squad com- posed of talented girls who gave a program of drills and dance numbers under the direction of Mrs. Jack Aust, Jr. The band also per- formed at this time. A record crowd, a winning score, and colorful entertainment made our Homecoming a great day! COLLEGE CHEERLEADERS COLLEGE BOYS ' BASKETBALL TEAM Hustlers! That ' s the earned name for our basketball players. EMJC may not have had the best boys ' basketball in the Mississippi Junior College League as far as winning games was concerned, but we never saw a more spirited group of voung men nor a faster group. We were always sure of good entertainment when they were in action. PLAYERS — Marcus Stokes, Billy Stokes, Tommy Covington, Max Johnson, Billy H. Smith. MAX JOHNSON Captain Fastest t hing on two feet ' COLLEGE GIRLS ' BASKETBALL TEAM The EMJC girls ' basketball team, under the capable leadership of Coach Clayton Blount, demonstrated one of the finest brands of basketball seen in this area for some time. The girls played a very fast and unique game of ball. On the court, they clicked with the smoothness of well oiled machinery. Their record at the time this copy was sent to the publisher was 10 wins and no losses including the defeat of the defending state championship girls from Booneville. The EMJC female team was the only undefeated girls team in the Junior College loop with a clear record behind them and the student body to spark them on to victory. They were the top threat to the Mississippi Junior College Championship for 1953.
