President J. D. Wallace became the first president of the institution after its organiza- tion in 1927. Upon his retirement from regular active service as president, the 1939 Lion carried the following tribute: For a period of sixteen years your un- failing will to work, your energy and your perseverance have been the guiding spirit of this institution . . . when faced with condi- tions or situations almost unsurmountable, you have refused to recognize that there was such a word as ' quit ' ; to just such a spirit on your part we feel that this institution owes its existence. Truly we are your grateful debtor. You found us with a mere school. You leave us with an institution. -m m Following President Wallace was President J. M. Tubb, who served the college as chief administrator from 1939-1945. Throughout his admin- istration, his outstanding personality and his deep interest in the welfare of students, especially during the trying war years, strengthened the college program and made it a service institution — one of the chief values of a junior college. His six years of guidance were terminated by his appoint- ment as State Superintendent of Education, in which capacity he is con- tinuing his service as a leading educator of this state. The present administration has continued the educational progress of the East Mississippi Junior College. During the past seven years eight buildings have been added to the physical plant, the campus streets have been hard-surfaced, the curriculum has been broadened, and the institution has become approved by the Southern Association of Colleges. Under the guidance of President Cruce Stark, the East Mississippi Junior College pushes onward in its program of education for the whole student as well as for all of its students. It strives to prepare youth for its decisions in the world of today. By a dynamic, stimulating, and completely interest- ing program, we of this junior college hope to develop to the fullest extent our ability and talents. The 1951 Football was considered a success, not in games won and lost, but in an exemplification of fighting spirit. After losing seven consecutive games, the Lions still had enough stick-to-it-tive-ness left to score 65 points in the season ' s finale. Starting a team averaging less than 160 pounds and less than 18 years in age, the freshman aggregation gave a respectable count of itself in every contest, and gained the experience needed to lay the foundation for a championship contender in 1952. With eleven sophomores returning from the battlefields of Korea plus some two dozen holdovers from this year ' s squad, the only word of warning to next year ' s opponents from Coach Sullivan was, Look out! COLLEGE GIRLS ' BASKETBALL TEAM Bobbye May, Martha Wells, Betty Spears, Allye Edwards, Mary Ann Hodges, Coach Blount, Maureen Hill, Quinnell Holt, Martha Woods, Bobbie Stokes, Barbara Ann Holder, Audrey McKee, Joyce Cook, Josephine Smith, Margie Ellis, Etna Jean Scarborough, Carrie Lee Burleson, Betty Jo Steelman, Anita Fay Tew, Clarkie Jean Molpus, Coach Childres. We are proud of this 1952 team! It won eight out of the first nine games. It de- feated Booneville ' s last year Champions in three out of four games. At the time the Lion went to the publisher, the team had averaged sixty-five points per game. E. M. J. C. TENNIS TEAM BILLY JOE CROSS BILLY TRAVIS E. M. J. C. H. White, Bobby Langford, Jackie Barrett, Richard Chambers, Coach Blount. The 1951-1952 Lions were probably the greatest aggregation ever to wear the maroon and white at the East Mississippi Junior College. At the time the yearbook went to press our team had won eighteen of their first twenty-two games. They have defeated every team that defeated them. They were undefeated in the Mississippi Junior Collge Conference, having won all seven games played. Their average was about seventy-eight points per game.
