x v N  xv: I ' f !■■ ■ sr i if mii i iw i in li I t-. ik.xr L ?- ., Ss? s ' yy 4j I JV 1 FOREWORD Throughout the years we will relive in memory our experiences on the campus of the East Mississippi Junior College. The members of the Lion staff have had one desire only: to represent the best of our school life, its fun, its work, its joys, and its problems. The Lion of 1948-1949 is yours. You made it; we merely preserved it through word and picture. May it enchance and brighten your memories of a period in your life in which you found realization of many ambitions and dreams. o o H, ;■:. ■ ? Ill Dedicated To Tomorrow ' s Boys and Girls Who will become students of the East Mississippi Junior College This annual is dedicated to the future generations of college youth who will love and appreciate our Alma Mater as we have done. As they open the same doors, walk down the same corridors, and assemble in the same rooms, may their enthusiastic voices and contagious laughter echo our own ambitions and ideals for a trained leadership. The Lion Staff NOTE As your LION editor, I wish to leave as my message to both the instructors and fellow-students the thoughts expressed in the following quotations. UNDERSTANDING I am the most treasured gift that man can give to man I am the real meaning of eternal love and true friendship I am well worth every effort ever made to find me I bring peace, happiness and contentment I change man ' s inhumanity to man, to man ' s humanity to man I eliminate all racial and religious prejudice Mankind must attain me or perish I am UNDERSTANDING TOLERANCE No democracy has ever survived with out me I banish the darkness of bigotry and hatred I bring the light of experience and wisdom I uphold the right of any one to differ with me I am an indication of development and maturity I strive for the good of the whole human race I am part of all people who are good, kind and wise I am the salvation of mankind. I am TOLERANCE May these Words to Live By help you attain success in your chosen occupations and happiness as citizens of the world in which you live. Are standards of living at the leveling off point? Is it impossible for medical science to increase the present span of life? Is the field of invention complete? Have we reached our goal in spiritual aspir- ation ? What is your answer to these questions? Your answer is def- initely No! The challenge, then, is yours. You accepted this challenge when you made your decision to enter junior college. Your training will help you to establish the foundation of your future, but you must continue to build. We wish for everyone whose name or picture appears in these pages health, happiness, and success. We express our appreciation to the Lion staff for a job well done. Sincerely yours, Cruce Stark Oufi V That more than a half million students are registered in the 651 junior colleges of the United States is a most challenging thought to me. A great majority of these young people sense the need of pressing forward in the preparation for a life service. It is my sincere wish that those of this great company who go out from the East Mississippi Junior College will make unselfish service to God and to humanity the object of their lives. I thank the annual staff for the space to say: Best wishes to the boys and girls whose activities and photographs appear in the 1948-1949 edition of the LION! Sincerely, T. L.
