Several years earlier this opera had its southern premiere in the East High auditorium, under the same director, MRS. H. V. CARSON. This chapter of the history of East High comes to a close at the end of this year-Mrs. Carson's last year as director of our Music Department, which has become outstanding largely because of its director and her love for her work and school. Saying thanks in a small but a sincere way, we the Senior Class of 1958 do proudly and gratefullly dedicate this, the eighth volume of the EAST WIND, to MRS. H. V. CARSON for a job well done. MR. D. At East, this past yearis football fortunes fell into a rags-to- riches category as the Eagles came up with their first winning season under the able guidance of new coach, Dick Williams. A tie with West was the only bright spot in the Eagles' first five games as they dropped four straight after the opener. Then the Eagles came up off the floor and gaining strength each week, shelled North, Cramerton, Lowell, Lincolnton, and Landis to finish with a 5-4-1 won-lost record. The fast finish was due to a fine all-round team effort with many boys outstanding in the latter games. The running of backs Wayne Kelly, VVheeler Buff, Mickey Griswold, and Robbie Mann, quarterbacking by Doug Shuman and Pete Landon, the improved line play of Bruce Lowe, Jim Hartis, jay Iorner, Johnny Bhinehart, Artie Mattox, Bobbie Mann, Gene Lamb, Ed Duchesney, Wayne Mingus, Leonard Boss, Don Kendell, Mike Goode, Manager. Third row: Coach Sechler, Coach Hood, Stanley Richmond, Harry Allen, Jeff Carroll, Bill Untz, Bob Harkey, Harry Allen, Bill Iones, Farnum Cray, and Dudley Lord, the defensive efforts of Wayne Cook, Jeff Guller, and Mike Pope, plus the work of ends Richard Vinroot and Shrine Bowler Ed Chesnutt, were all invaluable to the Eagles' first successful season. Despite the loss of eleven seniors, the return of one of the best looking crops of sophomores ever assembled at East points to a bright future for Coach VVilliams. Chesnutt was chosen as the team's most valuable player. The versatile end was chosen on several all- star teams and was selected to participate in the famed Shrine Bowl and East-West North Carolina all-star games. fwf MICKEY Gmswow BILL JONES Half Back A Center gf if fri' ffm! Here is your team: Danny Ernsberger, team captain, who throws a fast, accurate curve that has merited him a 148 average, second highest in the league, Bobby Hill holds the league-leading average of 151 by virtue of an easy curve ball which rated him the top spot on the Junior All-Star Match Team, lerry Nichols, with a 130 average, rolls a spinning ball with lots of action, Bobby Moss, a newcomer shows great promise and sports a 125 average, Jerry Cooke potentially an excellent bowler, main- tains a 125 average, and Tommy Stack, a steady clutch bowler rolls a deadly back-up ball that fells the pins for a 138 average. First row: Bobby Moss, jerry Cooke. Second row: Danny Ernsberger, jerry Nichols, Bobby Hill, Tommy Stack. Basketball is a fast growing sport in North Caro- lina. East Mecklenburg in the past few years has been literally keeping up with the growing trend of the bounceball game. In the past two years, East has either won a con- ference championship or gone to the state basketball tournament which is truly a mark of fine teams. In the state meet they finished fourth. This year the Eagle basketeers found themselves under a new coach in the person of former East Carolina star, Don Harris. THE EAGLES ON THE H A R D W O O D Harris faced the problem of replacing super-stars, Lewis Carpenter, Carlisle Davenport, and Iohn Crump. But the young mentor had six returning lettermen around which to build a winning club. Producing a team equivalent to those of the past two seasons was proving to be a difficult task at the time this annual went to press. Harris' returning lettermen included Argie Wal- lace, Ed Chesnutt, Dwight Rea, David Landon, Richard Vinroot, and W. L. Helms. Despite the fact that these boys were lettermen, they could still be classified as inexperienced when the season started. f TTY, Q4 , I mi!!!
