It can be said that it was a good season, for success is not measured in victories alone. East had a new coach, Tom Stevens, from UNC. lfle molded the boys into a fast, hard-hitting outfit. East opened their season against West and promptly tucked away their first win, 19-7. They later added two other victories, over Cramerton, 33-O, and Lowell, 14-13, to finish the season with a 3-5-1 slate. YCU WERE THERE WITH THE EAGL The Eagles' attack featured the running of halfbacks George Thurston and Carlisle Davenport, and the passing of quarterback Don Phillips. Defensively, linebacker Don Kimsey looked good, along with linemen Tom Skinner, Bob Harkey, Mickey Griswold, lim Gross, Bruce Lowe, and Wayne Bramble. Elanker Ed Chesnutt, though injured part of the season, came back to rack hard in the last three games. The season marked the last high school football for twelve East seniors. The Eagles, cage teams have progressed remarkably in the past couple of years, and are now becoming a recognized power. Coach Iohn Needy deserves much credit for Eastys fine showing on the hardwood. Ditto for Assistant George lVlelton. This yearls edition of the Eagles featured a great rebounding game, as well as an exceptional tendency to hit from outside. The squad also proved to have more depth than was first anticipated. At the time this article was written, East was tied for the GCAA lead with a lfO slate in conference play, and an over-all 62 record. From their present squad, East will lose 5 players via graduation, of which only 3 are starters. With this in mind, it appears that the Eagles are set for the future also.
