The class of '56 was really the greatest! Then I turned to my millionaire husband, Jeff Efird, and said, UDarling, get me another cup of punch, please. OH Look, there's Ruth Brown. Remember how they used to tease her about her name. VVell, she lived up to it and she is a great 1azz singer now!! 4'She should get together with Earnest Stix Curlee, he answered. He reorganized his band and David Gaddy ioined him with his harmonica. 'fNNever mind that punch now. Look who I see. Fran Barbet. I wonder when she came back? 'il-Iell o, she said with her usual bright smile. My hus-been and I are here visiting Manya Creel and I was so happy when I heard about ze reunion. I I hope you enioy your visit, I managed to get in before I was swent HVVBV bv the crowd. . Would you look at this? Jeff said as he handed me a piece of paper. BE SURE AND DROP hill g.1Olg1i3BEFORE THE SUPPLY TS . H U. SPECIAL ON LAVENDAR CHEVY CONVERTIBLES Svlvia Smithls Used Car Lot 900 East Super Highway Charlotte, N. C. must be sure to see her before we leave, I said. '!But there must be 500 people here, I thought. How would we ever . . . 'iOops! Excuse me . . . Glenda Bunn-I mean Beck. This is wonderful. Have you seen Carolyn Hall? I suppose you heard SIIGIS one of the ten best dressed in Charlotte this year. Yes, and say, Earl Wentz and Rachel Carr met by chance and decided to give a concert at the coliseum next month. And Pat King's the head nurse at Presbyterian Hospital now. I heard that those young docs really gave her the chase until she finally married one of them. VVhile I'm yapping I may as well gossip. I heard that David Dulin was arrested for trying to hold up a Hickory Grove Super lllarket, HE said all he wanted yvas some bubble gumf' Glenda, I've iust got to ask you something. Is it true that Barbara Pike Tweed was arrested for disturbing the peace by singing opera on the square? Really? Well I should have known that she'd do something impractical one day. Look Jeff, there's Phyllis Hord and her husband. She told me earlier this evening that she had a sitter from Frances Gord0n's Baby Sitters Bureau . Oh, I almost forgot to mention you got a letter from Bobby Davis. Remind me to let you read it. I heard hels quite famous these days for having the fastest gun in the West CTexasD. Speaking of guns, there's Gail Jordan. I heard that she shot her fourth husband, but she survived the chair 2 times so they had to let her go free. I think Alan Elmore is the guy who pushed the iuice but- ton . I stopped for a moment to catch a breath and think of something in Silv- 'KYou know, dear. Since Janet and Bobby Herron are the ones giving this brawl, I mean ball. I think we should try to find them and speak to them. And I've iust spotted someone else we can speak to on the way. Joyce Faulkner! Over here! How are you?'! Fine! Did you hear the bad news about Shirley Hargett doing a baton act at the Rose Bowl Game in California and falling and breaking her leg? You know I was chairman of the festival this frear3,Looks as though Illl be chairman of something as long as I ive. We'll see you around, Joyce. Don't exhaust your brain! On the way to get Dave Gibbs to congratulate him for finally winning a iitterbug contest at a local dance Jeff said. Why don't we sneak up on Norma Richmond Johnston and pull her Upoodle cutu. I figured she'd wack off the pony tail when she became a great lawyer. I think her husband Harry is still coaching at Notre Dame. UYes, I answered. I wonder how they found time to. . . . And then it happened. I bumped into someone and knocked punch from here to there. VVhen I turned around I saw John Ferrell standing with an empty cup in hand and punch dripping off his nose. After a thousand apologies, hubby and I wandered on. Then I saw a beautiful bright red evening dress and I knew before I looked that it was Lynda Stansell. Off the dancing stage she's Mrs. Donnie Gardner and the mother of 3. Someone tapped me on the shoulder and I turned around to find myself face to face with Bobby Chastain who told me that he and M. L. VValters were going to play a guitar duet. As I was asking about his family the whole party burst into cheers and applause and I scanned the room until I found the center of at- traction. Then Vickev Eagle, Earnest Freeland, and Bobby Reid, burst into their famous rendition of I'm A Coming To Your House. They never finished. Jerry McCorkle stole the show by swinging from the chandelier and drinking punch from Joyce I'Iouston's shoe. It was then that Jeff told me to look over i.n one corner. About 20 beautiful girls were huddled together and seemed to be arguing about something. Then Jack Steele broke away from them and ran out the door. The poor boy really looked frightened. Then I heard a voice saying, Pardon me. Would you like to sponsor a page on our church calendar? We expect them to be better this year and . . . Very quietly I said, Hell-0, Alice Pearson. With a red face she said, I've iust got calendars in my blood, I guess. VVhen I heard the laughter I knew it was Joy Lee Alexander. As usual she was bent double and nearly in convulsions over one of Zebbie Morris' iokes. Naturally I was the one who noticed the crowd of men. They were iust standing around content to look at the beautiful models, Jackie Brunk, Sybil Thomas, Elizabeth Ann Long, Nancy Christen- bury, and Lib Newland. The fan-fare startled me. The band leader, Bobby Byrum, an- nounced a iitter-bug contest for all who were still young enough to take it. Before I had a chance to think Trady Johnston yanked me onto the floor and said, Let's go girl! I've always wanted to get in on one of these things! Also in the contest were Ellen Brewer and Wayne Brigmang Bobby Garmon and Nela Gahr- mann, Roy Hartis and Doris Helmsg and George Hedrick and Linda Little. Nobody lasted long enough to win but George and Linda got the prize for being the best matched dancing couple. Then came the big moment. The crowd gathered around and Bobby struck up the band. Dum-dum, dum-dum, Charleston- Charleston! Bobby Little and Loretta Helms, naturally! They're still great! Oh, Oh, she's spotted me, I thought. It was Elizabeth Moore, writer of the gossip column for the Charlotte Observer, Hi Gail! Say, did you know that Marvin Ashley has been sued for divorce bv his 3rd wife on a non-support charge. He says he 'lust doesn't like to work. And Billie Jo Atkinson has iust completed her biography about Joe Collom called Big Boy Lost . Anne Craig has consented to publish it. Did vou hear that the U. S. Government offered to bury Rav Cronin in Einstein's tomb but he told them there's no use waiting around for him because if he can't take it with him he isn't going. Fave Culp has opened a new Beauty Salon and all of her onera- tors, Hazel Freeman, Joyce Gribble, Jackie Gulley, and Barbara Hampton have gone blonde. Her only male operator is Clark McFadden and it's been rumored that she only hired him to draw customers. Jewell Flowe has written a book titled, How To Run Off and Get Married. Harold Robinson, Eddie Revels, and Ed Moser have opened up a body shop called the Shot-Hot Rod-Shop. Vivian Vick has bought stock in Sloan Novelty Industries . Polly's main attraction is Marcus Sinclair who demonstrates everything she has in stock. Elizabeth, I gasped, how in the world do you dig up all of this info? Oh, it's easy, she said. My assistant Frances Sneecl goes around in disguise as Vicky the elephant since she is now allowed to roam the streets free. No one but her new manager, Nancy Stilwell, would think of such a thing. The only reason she got hiv with it is because the chief of police, Joe Steele, is an old IIPII . I was at Benny Stevens' new modem dentist office the other day and overheard Barbara Heaton and Carleen Courtney talking about Ingrid Cooper. It seems she refused to return the diamond mink coat when she broke her engagement to some poor e ow. Bill Gathev is a great comedian now and Dick Dohrmann has literally run Tab Hunter out of Hollywood. Jimmy Earnheart is playing first' base for the Brooklyn Dodgers now and Holland Gladden is a radio announcer for station B-E-B-O-P, owned and operated by Clifford Grayson. Listen a minute, I managed to sneak in. What ever became of Tudy Hartiss and Ellen Sloan? Oh, they're both math professors at U.N.C. Together they figured out a wav to make 2 and 2 equal 5 besides the old Al- gebra method. Linda Williams' husband gave her a red Jaguar which matches her hair. l't's real different!! Almeda Whitescarver has taken over the I Love Lucy show with a program called I Love Men . Robert VVatson is the an- nouncer and he advertises a new brand of non-smear lipstick called Smackie-lVIouf . Emily Wallace recently opened up a new rest home for bachelors and Joyce Yandle is her assistant. Emily Lee is engaged for the fifth time and the whole city of Matthews is hoping she'll go through with it this time. I suppose she returned all of the other rings? I said, meaning no harm. VV'hat ever became of Sallie McConnell? Oli, she's making records now, and she has a new one out called Black Sun. It's real eerie as well as a smash hit! It's really been fun gabbing, Liz, but I iust must see some people. Give Barbara Kistler my regards and tell her if I get sick I'll drop by her clinic for a shot or something. With ears ringing, we moved through the crowd. It was get- ting late so we decided to leave. On the way out the door we met Gerald Kelly coming in. He said, Hi, you two. Better late than never! Then he made his entrance and yelled, Let's have a art !!' p Ass we walked to our limousine I turned around to take a look, perhaps a last look, at the great class of East High School, '56. I said aloud. Goodbye all of you wonderful people, and tumecl to my hubby and said, Well, back to New York and high society.
