DEDICATION The Senior Class of 1954 is especially proud to dedicate this Fourth Volume of the East Wind to Miss Cleta Black. Because of her untiring interest as sponsor of the senior class, teacher of senior English, and adviser to the annual, she has endeared herself to each and every senior. Her high standards have instilled in each of us a higher regard for the finer things of life, and we feel that the rising classes are indeed fortunate in having the opportunity to work with such an outstanding person. But the im- portant thing stressed was team spirit, and our squad was loaded with this trait before the year was over. Despite the ir inexperience, the Eagles managed to stage a short come-back in the latter part of the season, winning two of their last four games. The year also saw a switching of formations— the T going out and the single-wing being installed by Coaches Charlie Ostwalt and John Needy. Any team will be handicapped in having to change formations in the short lime that our Eagles had. Co-captaining the 1953 Eagles were Dale Kimsey and Hill Overton. Both of these men lived up to their duties, time and again strengthening the team with their fine play. The Eagles opened the Greater Charlotte AA Conference season against West Mecklenburg at Richard Field on Septem- ber 12. The West Indians took a 20-12 victory, but the score did not actually tell the story as the Eagles outgained the opponents in almost every department. Then followed a pair of games that should not have even been scheduled. First the Eagles journeyed to Rock Hill and took a 55-0 beating from the team that was rated as No. 1 in South Carolina at the end of the season. Next the Harding Rams, State Class AA champions for the second straight year, trounced East by a 53-7 count. The Eagles looked more like a football team in the next game. However, they dropped a close 13-6 game to the Mvers Park Mustangs. East led at the end of the first half, but brilliant running by the fees proved to be the deciding factor of the game. Two games at Richard Field were next on the schedule and the Eagles lost both of them. On October 2, the Landis Yellowjackets pounded the East Mecklenburgers into submission by a 25-6 score. The following week Bessemer City visited Richard Field and went home with a 20-6 victory. The Eagles played valiantly for one half, but just couldn ' t keep the pace with the more experienced Bessemers. The Eagles finally won one! At Fort Mill on October 23, East took a hard-earned victory over the South Carolina team by 25-14. Fullback Gene Baker scored three times for the winners, and the entire team played outstanding ball. Johnny Gray, Tim Shumaker, and Dalton Alexander were main cogs in a stout line that held the enemy backs in check. The next week the Eagles again lost, but this time they had no cause to hide their heads in shame. The loss was to North Mecklenburg ' s powerful crew by 34-12. Dale Kimsey was the East spark in this one, scoring twice and playing a superb defensive game. The Blue and Gold won again the following week, spilling China Grove at Griffith Park, 19-6. Tailback Kimsey crossed the goal line three times and passed for an extri point. Again it was a team effort that won the victory, in that the tackling and blocking was very sharp. It was the Homecoming game for East, and there was no better way to top it off than a ' ictory on the gridiron. Tech High ' s Wolfpack dropped the Eagles in the final game of the season, 21-0. The first half of the game was strictly a deadlock, but the Wolves battled fiercely in the second half to walk off with a win. There was a host of individual stars for the Eagles this year. The already mentioned Kimsey, Gray, Baker, Overton, Alexander, and Shumaker were fine ball players, along with the leading pass receptor, Leslie Taylor, Fred Simpson, Bobby Price, Buddy Hazard, and many others. It is true that the past season was not a very successful one, but most of all the players learned the value of close teamwork and the spirit of keen competition. Perhaps in the future our Eagles will grow strong in victories as they have grown strong in other assets and virtues. When that day comes, we may say that we truly have a great school. Mary Lou Riser Barbara Fundekuurk Attorneys at Law CLASS PROPHECY Planet City, Mars May 8, 1964 Dear Mr. Pittman, Here it is 1964, and we thought that you would like to know how your seniors of 1954 are doing on their great undertakings since leaving East Mecklenburg High School ten years ago. Of course, you know that Bruce Abernethy, Doug Hursey, and Herman Hinson star tled the world by in- venting the spaceship that brought us to Mars; since then. Gene Baker and Beth Norris have won high honors from United Planets for their one-thousandth spaceship trip without an accident. This is a strange place indeed, and fields are open for the many talents that you so patiently encouraged. It is amazing how anything will grow from seeds up here on Mars. Isabelle Stancil has made a small fortune by growing lightening bugs that change colors. However, poor Ivohn Deese and Lane Austin have failed completely in their endeavor to grow greenbacks, but they did succeed in stocking Mars with bullfrogs. Kemper Lee and Willie Rea have built a showplace schoolhouse very much like East. One of your more well- known students, Sid Crump, is the principal. Barbara Funderburk, Ellen Long, and Starr Carriker are teachers. Larry Griffie and Dalton Alexander are the coaches of our football team, which has won all of its game including a 99-0 victory over Harding High of Canal City. Speaking of sports, our professional baseball is played differently from the way you play it on Earth. Here a pitcher tries to see how many hits he can let the other team get. Herman Vick and Geurald Johnston are having great success. Another of your students who has been successful in sports is Dean Moore. He is our heavyweight wrestling champion. Betty Edwards, Jean Trull, and Shelia Jordan have set up a tourist Motel on the Milky Way. Melda Maddox, Gloria Hood, and Barbara Beck are matrons in the Martian Penitentiary for Women where Ann Black is chief turnkey. Annette Griffin runs a fish market during the day and baby sits for Betsy Ross ' ten children at night. Marion Sullivan and Peggy Porter have a skunk farm, and Bar- bara Singleton Justice and Betsy Haney run a perfume factory. There has been some talk of their merging their businesses. Virginia McFadden and Alice Gibson finally landed iobs as French interpreters for the Martian Embassy where Hazel Broome is chief receptionist. Lorraine Staggs has been named Miss Pluto of 1964 . Mary Lou Riser is now a famous historian. She is presently engaged in writing The History of Neptune which will be published by that famous firm headed by three of your prize students — Lorea Griffin, Marlene Elmore, and Mary Edens. John Reaves is Chief Peanut Inspector for the Slippery Rock Earth Bars Company. Guess who we saw today selling potted plants in Haze- line Haigler ' s Hot House? None other than Jerry Chris- tenbury. He had M. J. Daughtery and Ben Johnston bring him up two-hundred gladioli, so he; could keep Hazel ' s shop (which really is a front for John Rea ' s moonshine still) smelling legal. CLASS PROPHECY Carolyn Kistler and Martha Moser are experimenting on a new kind of horsefeed called Kistmo ' s Atomic Pel- lets, but as there are no horses on Mars, they ' ve hired Max Head and Bill Tarlton as testers.
