Hi -£v- x, o- X o- yo- -ctt - v JL ° ' - f t d it 1 f. 1 5 19 5 3 ALMA MATER As eagles make their flight Across the blue and gold, Oh, sons, and daughters, of East High May we be brave and bold In spreading truth and knowledge Where ' er our paths may lead. Thy precepts, Alma Mater, Within our hearts we ' ll hold. The sun is eastward rising Across a clear blue sky; The knowledge gained within thy halls Is gold with value high. With loyalty and honor, We worship at thy shrine. Oh, Alma Mater, we now sing The praises that are thine. Page Three FOREWORD Years pass very rapidly, and once past can never be recaptured. Realizing this, we have tried to print some of the most outstanding events of this school year. As many seniors of the past, we are eagerly awaiting the day when we shall be graduated; but we shall never forget the happy days spent in the halls of our Alma Mater. Since we are the first class to spend three years in East Mecklenburg, we shall cherish many happv memories-memories that will enrich our lives and memories that should make us better world citizens. We, the East High Eagles, feel that our wings have finally developed, and that we can now Mount up on Wings as Eagles and take our rightful place in the world. It is with pride that we present the Third Volume of The East Wind. May it keep alive in each of us the splendid spirit which we hope will become a tradition in our school. DEDICATION ... With sincere respect and admiration, the Senior Class of 1953 proudly dedicates the Third Volume of The East Wind to Mr. D. K. Pittman, our principal. For the past three years Mr. Pittman has been a tireless worker. A more capable man could not have been obtained to organize and to lead East Mecklenburg High School to the heights she has now attained. He is always willing to lend a sympathetic ear to students ' problems and to encourage in students a greater zest for learning and good citizenship. He has shown an interest in community progress and in sponsoring programs of cultural and religious value to the school and community. We, the Senior Class, are grateful that we can leave our Alma Mater under the direction of such a capable and beloved principal. Commerce MASCOTS Tommy Stilwell Bennie Lippard SENIOR CLASS POEM Listen underclassmen, and you shall hear How East to us seniors became so dear. We ' ll never forget as the years go by, The fun we had at dear ole East High. We were the first class, the school was new, (One we ' ll be proud to leave to you). That first year seemed a little long, But with our teachers ' help we got along. Our sophomore year passed at last, And we moved up to the Junior Class. We began to get into the spirit of things, Looking forward to what each new day would bring. Now we are seniors all too soon, And we know that in the following June Part of our goal at last we ' ll reach. Gone forever are our days at East. Never again shall we sit and cram, Eloping to pass that big exam, Or the nights at a ball game we ' d be Cheering our boys on to victory. Our high school days, yes, they ' re almost gone, Soon out of school we ' ll be and on our own. And now as we leave we realize, These have been the best years of our lives. But before we leav e, we should like to relay The great love we shall have for our school always. Jo Anne Jacobs, Class Poet MOTTO We strive today for a better tomorrow. As the season began much was expected of East ' s gridiron force and in the way of thrills, excitement, and team spirit those expectations were fulfilled. However, as the season progressed injuries to key players kept the Eagle machine from operatina at its tull power. r East opened its 1952 schedule with Myers Park, played at Memorial Stadium and witnessed by three thousand spectators. After a first half which saw Myers Paik thwart every ' hast High thrust and threaten to score on two occasions, the Eagles came to life. Sparked by Charlie Crabtiee ' s passing and cool signal calling East scored three times in the second half. The first touchdown came on a 3 5 yard pass play from Crabtree to Bobby Johnston Dale Kimsey skirted left end after a Crabtree pitch-out for the second tally and Fred Simpson breezed through a big hole in the left side of the line for 35 vards and the third and final marker. A stout defense headed by Eddie Alexander Tommy Johnson, Roy iNeal Flenniken, Billy Gray, and Sidney Shuman held the Myers Park eleven in check. The Eagles played host to Tech High the following week. After completely dominat- ing the play during the first half and leading 8 to 0 at the intermission; East fell before a VVolfpack eleven that would not be denied in the second half by a final score or 19 to 8. Next East High traveled to Cramerton. This game was full of good hard blockino ana tackling. I he first half was very even with neither team scorino. Emrino the second half East swung mto a slight command, as far as the tempo of the oame was concerned, on the fine running by Bobbv Johnston and Dale Kimsey and the fierce line play of the East forward wall. However, thev could not muster enouoh power to push the ball across and the game ended with the Eagles on the Cramerton 1 yard line. On the next to the last play center Lee Orr was injured and was out for the next two weeks. East played host to West the following week and completely outplayed the Indians during the first two periods, holding a 7 to 0 advantage at half ' time. Dunno the second halt the situation reversed itself and a fighting, determined West eleven eked out a 12 to victory over the stunned Eagles. After an open date the Eagles travelled to Bessemer City for a non conference oame. IJunng the first half it looked as though East was outmanned and the team trailed 6 to 0 at half time. However, in the last two periods they came to life, scorino late in the fourth quarter after having an 80 yard touchdown run by Dale Kimsey nullified by a clipping penalty. As the game ended, Bessemer City was trying vainly to pass their way to ano:her score. Final score East 6, Bessemer City 6. The Eagles trailed 7 to 6 at the half; near the close of the half quarterback Charlie Crabtree sus ained a back injury which kept h,m out of action for four weeks. In the third period both Teams scored with neither team converting and the score stood at 13 to 12 until the last play of the came when Landis ' all-state halfback, Bill Barnes, scored from six yards out East s defensive team did a good 10b of checking the all-stater with his longest un of the night being for 12 yards.
