EAST MEADOW HIGH SCHOOL EAST MEADOW, NEW YORK 11554 VOLUME THIRTY DR. FRANK SARACINO, PRINCIPAL Title Page 1 4 Opening In some forgotten corner of the attics of our lives. We will find these pages, covered with the dust of time. Gather them up most fondly and shed a tear on them For they contain golden memories, the annals of our youth. Farewell, my fellow Seniors, Farewell to East Meadow High, Farewell to all the Dreamers, Who made these years fly by. 6 Opening STUDENT FRIENDS (Above) Is Mindi Schwartz really taller than George Marine? (Right) Dante Fiorio and |ohn Curry pass the time waiting for the bus. In June we go our separate ways, leaving many precious things behind. What we will take with us are fond memories and the fast and firm friendships that have bloomed and endured over the three long years we have spent at E.M.H.S. There are so many friends we've made at school: There are our drinking buddies (Coke, of course) with whom we've spent those countless Saturday nights having milk and cookies while we've watched the “Love Boat. There are those classmates we will run into in the Cinninnati airport on a rainy night in 1997; and we will ask, Didn't you go to East Meadow? and there will be memories to share as the flights are cancelled. And then there are our first and truest loves which we will recall somewhere among the stars. (Below) Donna Vano. Ellen Dippel. and Jo Kraynick enjoy a day outdoors. (Right) What are Andy Gorenstein and Jodi Cohen hiding from Adam Hoi berg? 8 Friendship (Left) We're coining, wait up.. (Bottom) Hey guys, let's jam. (Left) Smile everyone! (Top) Leora Mejikovsky. Maria Cassano and Andrea Gray cheer on the team. Friendship 9 FASHION (Above) Suzette Siegel says, That's all. Folks. (Right) Liz Cardinale has her own style of dress. Michelle Itzkowitz shows us that the preppy look is in. Everyone has his or her own individual style and everyone has her own idea of what fashion is. To some, a big sale at Bloomingdales means nothing and to others it's a way of life. Most students just take the easy way out — Levis, a jersey and sneakers. Then again, some other students wouldn't be caught dead without their Guess jeans and Benetton sweaters. The students at East Meadow High are unique and they prove that with their different opinions of what fashion is. 10 Fashion (Above) Mrs. Roy's fashion designing class shows off their stuff (Below) Richard Levine stands up to show us that the leather tie and jeans are still in. (Lower Left) The motorcycle — another form of transportation. Unfortunately not all of us have cars. Transportation for some of us is still the old methods of buses, bikes, walking or being driven by our parents. Those who do drive are constantly asked for lifts and arrive in school at the last possible minute. People who take the bus don't know when they'll get to school. They either stand at their bus stop for hours or run down the block to catch it on time. Bicyclers and walkers are a hearty bunch. In the worst weather they trudge their way to school. Let's not forget those lazy individuals that ask Mom or Dad to transport them back and forth. In this way they avoid the horrors of all other modes of transportation. We all may get here in different ways but it doesn't really matter as long as we get here. Transportation 13 STUDYING Laime Weiss soaks up a few autumn rays as she prepares a report. Irwin Schtierman and Nicole Stelling use the East Meadow Public Library for research projects. Oh, how we hated to study. It was so uncool. What had studying to do with school, anyhow? No one, years from now, will remember the hours we put in studying. What we want to remember are the good times. But we did — occasionally and very rarely — study. They made us do it — they with their pop quizzes and their tests and their reports and failure notices and report cards. Well, we had to study sometimes. I guess it wasn't all bad. Some of the stuff was sort of interesting. I guess I learned a lot. I really did. You know, maybe all that studying was worth something. Maybe I really do know quite a lot. 14 Studying Studying 15 Robin Kapustein catches up on her homework. Bilii Goldman takes a breather from her intensive studying. HANGING OUT Everyone hangs out, but students are the ex- perts when it comes to finding a comfortable spot where they can be themselves, awav from the prying eyes of parents and teachers. They always find comfortable little hangouts around tne school and claim them as their own. One of the most popular places is the cafeteria. Students go there when they are hungry or just want to lounge around. Another popular spot is the library. The library is a great spot to finish the assignments that were supposed to be done at home. Another great hang-out-place is the classroom before and after the teacher begins class. These are just a few of the great places that students can let it all hang loose. Two other all- time favorites hang-outs are the Senior Alcove and the Bus Entrance. 16 Hanging Out (Top Left) Doug Solow. Duke Reynolds. That's where the day begins and ends. They serve as storage spots for all our junk. Also, they are convenient meeting places. When you really have to tell someone something, you put a note in the appropriate locker. Of course, not all of our lockers are where they are supposed to be. As in the case of all real estate, everyone wants one in a centralized location. Some individuals have two or three lockers. At times, this can be confusing and they can walk around for days wondering where their books are. Many lockers are customized. A customized locker makes its owner feel more at home. Pictures and mirrors are just some of the things found in them and represent the owner's personality. A locker is a student's home away from home!! Some, of course, not at all! It hit some of us as Sophomores and for some of us, it just stuck. Sometimes senioritis hits us in bed — either we just stay home or get to school and don t sign in. Then we do the selec- tive cutting deal! After all, we've waited all our lives to be Seniors and the year is winding down. The final minutes have arrived. There's all the important stuff: Hawaiian luau. Senior prom. Senior cut out day, graduation and all those great parties. Who has time for school? The DJ and atmosphere at the Huntington Townhouse kept everyone dancing all night. You could see the time put in on the outfits for the night. They guys were sassy and the girls looked elegant in their gowns. The Prom is a night for dreaming. It is a night that will always be remembered. No longer a strictly female contest, the Battle pits the three classes against each other to see which class is more skilled in a variety of contests. The winner is the class which piles up the best total score. In the final weeks before the Battle, the classes declare war on each other. In the 1987 Battle of the Classes, the present Senior Class chose a military theme. 24 Battle of the Classes (Top) Captains: Duke Reynolds, Steve Anderson, Suzette Seigle, and Suzy Glennon lead our team on to a hopeful victory. The guys wore army fatigues and acted out the drill from Stripes. The girls paraded in the uniforms of the U.S. Armed Forces. Kay Griffin paraded around the gym as an ar- my tank while Steve Anderson and Brian Walter got the class charged up by portraying Rambo and Uncle Sam respectively. Another hit of the evening was the Junior mural which represented the U.S. Armed Forces, and took first place in this event. (Upper Left) Carolyn Broderick, Charlie Bunshaft. The Week of October 7th kicked off Spirit Week! Almost everyone displayed school spirit. On Oct. 7th we learned of everyone's school spirit. It was Hat Day and they ranged from Mickey Mouse ears to large Mexican sombreros! It was followed by Jersey Day on Oct. 8th when we bor- rowed a friend's or wore our own jerseys. Oct. 9th was Blue and Gold Day. Almost everyone came in with sweats. The final day before Homecoming, Oct. 10th was Pep Rally. Everyone on Fall sports had to dress up to celebrate many years of tradition! Classes were shortened as the Cheerleaders and Rockettes became nervous about performing in front of the many fans.” The Pep Rally ended with the Varsity Cheerleaders and Football players gathering on the gym floor to their theme song Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2. (Lower Right) Mindi Schwartz struts her stuff as the Cheerleaders put on one of their dazzling performances. One of the highlights of Spirit Week and Homecoming season is the Fall Pep Rally, one of two such events held each year at East Meadow H.S. It is a time when classes are shortened and students have a break from the normal school day routine. The Cheerleaders and the Rockettes each put on a superb performance, showing off their respective talents. The Marching Band provides a feral background beat to stir up the latent school pride that resides in each of us. Then come the athletes, the representatives of the various sports, who are received with thunderous applause by the cheering student body. The Pep Rally is one of the most exciting events of the school year. (Top Left) The Rockettes are caught here in mid-routine (Top Right) When John Nicolich speaks, everybody listens. The tempo begins with a steady beat in the last weeks of September and mounts to a crescendo in early Oc- tober as the big day approaches. The fans cheer on the Jets and hope for a winning season. The Cheerleaders practice for weeks to be prepared for the big day. The band blows and pounds and marches and hates every minute of being out on a cold field. The Rockettes kick and kick and kick. And the school beauties hope and hope and hope. The classes prepare their floats and every year it becomes bigger and bigger. On October 11, 1986, East Meadow High School held its annual Homeconning celebration. It was an auspicious day for the Jets who trounced the Calhoun Colts, 20-14, with Mike Strycharz scoring two touchdowns. It was also an auspicious day for Nicole Stelling who was crowned Homecoming Queen. The new Queen was attended by her court: Lillian Beilina, Linda Conte and Danielle LaMantia. It was also an auspicious day for the local politi- cians and celebrities, along with the students, former students, parents and friends who join in celebrating Homecoming. Every year the Halftime show becomes bigger and bigger. The Senior floar followed the yellow brick road to Oz. The Junior' float bridged the two entertainment capitals and the Sophomores brought Broadway to East Meadow. 32 Homecoming HOMECOMING 86 (Upper Left) The Cheerleaders, J.V. and Varsity, form a pyramid. HALLOWEEN One of the high points of the school year is the annual Hallo- ween Dance. Typically, in East Meadow, the Halloween Dance rarely takes place on Halloween itself. This year it was held on Saturday, November 1, the day on which the SAT's were given. With all the pressure that had built up in preparing for the SAT's, the Hallo- ween Dance was a great method of relaxing and blowing off a little steam. D.J. All we wait for is an off period so we can go and eat. Some people stay in and sample the culinary delights of the cafeteria. Others would rather eat out and go to the nearest restaurant, Roy Rogers. Those of us with cars are more adventurous. We venture to places like Burger King and McDonalds to assuage our palates. You may not realize it but food is an intricate part of our day. 36 Food FOOD! These courses are fast- paced, competitive and extremely challenging. Advanced courses in calculus, biology, English, history and physics are among the courses offered. Colleges accept scores of three or bet- ter in these courses and grant college credit for them. Many schools require that the student applying take A.P. courses in high school. Much time and effort is needed to ex- cel in these difficult courses. Many students wonder why they accept the challenge to begin with, but the majority stays, succeeds and leaves feeling well prepared for the years to come. Instead of taking purely academic classes, they decide to take vocational ones. Every Thursday and Friday, residents of the community are in- vited to visit the cosmetology classroom for free permanents, hair- cuts, manicures and facials. Under the direction of Mrs. Buf- fone, the program has grown to attract an ever increasing clientele. The pro- gram is popular with the residents, many of whom are senior citizens, who are attracted by the free service offered. Of course, the program benefits the cosmetology students who have an opportunity to practice their skills in a real work setting. To help us decide, the school has college fairs which are held in the cafeteria, usually periods two and three. Here, col- lege representatives can tell us all the in- formation we need to know about the colleges they represent. Students who don't plan on going to college also visit the fair to get out of class or to pick up a brochure out of curiosity or for the heck of it. Guidance also helps in preparing us for college by giving us college catalogs and sending out our transcripts. These things combine to make choosing a col- lege much easier. (Above) Kevin John and Althea Elliot pay close attention to the information given by the representative. 48 College Preparation (Below) Lainie Weiss, Cindy Callaghan and Lu-ann Johanson are confused about college. (Above) Juniors Bethany Bergman and Craig Speiser start their quest for college life early. College Preparation 49 spipubj os Candids 51 c o M P U T E R S Today's school is a lot different from that which our parents knew. The contemporary classroom employs all sorts of machines from plain old tape decks, phonographs, and movie machines to the complex computers and video tape machines. Now it seems almost as necessary to know about these skills as it once seemed necessry to know the three R's. The computer has made it from highly technical business and scien- tific fields to the classroom and the home. With this in mind, the school offers such computer courses as BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL, and Machine Language. A few years ago, the only machines students needed were a pen, pencil, eraser, and their thinking caps. Luckily, however, we now have the help of computers to make life easier. 52 Computers MUSIC Subdivide! This is a term unknown outside the world of music. Mr. Katz, the conductor repeats this word over and over again to his well known Symphonic Band. This word means playing on the same wavelength. The Symphonic Band is not the only one East Meadow High has to be proud of; there are also the Stage Band led by Mr. Tibbetts, the Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra, and Marching Band. All of these groups of talented individuals work very hard for long periods of time to keep the Music Department in East Meadow High one of Nassau County's best. But, on the night of each group's concert all the hard work pays off. The East Meadow Auditorium becomes filled not only with people but with sounds of pro- fessional, elegant music. Music 53 Homeroom is a time when most students go back to sleep, do unfinished homework, or just catch up on the latest gossip. Homeroom is the place where we try to listen to the latest scores of last night's game, the place where we hear Mr. Gruber telling us whose classes are cancelled (as we all sit and pray) and the place where we get ourselves collected for the long, tiresome day ahead. Some of us pledge our allegiance to the American Flag while others count the seconds to the 2:03 pm bell. All in all, homeroom is the place where we can relax and prepare and escape. 54 Homeroom Unfortunately, along with school comes studying. Everyone has their own way of get- ting around that awful word. It may be in front of the television with the volume on 10, or in homeroom on the day of the test. Some people find that they have to study a lot more than others to achieve the same grade. Some people find that they do not have to study at all. Then there are those who do have to study, but don't. These are the people to look out for. They are going to have to find another way to pass; some ways may even be illegal. Either path, whether it means honest studying or not so honest studying, manages to get us through okay. Led by Coaches Boyle, Megale and Bardes, the squad played hard against some strong teams. The beginning of the season was promis- ing, for the Jets won the first game (against Levittown) in the final thirty seconds of the game with a surprise touchdown. They also defeated Herricks, but lost to Garden City. They rallied to defeat the Calhoun Colts for a brilliant Homecoming victory. The Jets suffered a series of heartbreak- ing defeats, losing by one point to both Wantagh and West Hempstead. Unfor- tunately, an unlucky streak had begun and the Jets lost to Mepham, and Sewanhake. Outstanding during the season was Mike Strycharz who sparkled on the field in every game, along with Kevin John, Doug Solow, Sean Torres, Ray Montecalvo and Kevin Burbige. The Jets were 4-1-1 in tne second half of the season. They scored a mere two goals in 8 games and then exploded offensive- ly to dive into the playoffs. The Jets were seeded seventh in the counties and were awarded a home game to start the post-season. Many people did not think the Jets could get this far. The 86-87 Cheerleaders were Ted by captains Mary Jo Indovino, Mindi Schwartz, and Kaycee Wise. Led by Faculty Advisor Jared Hershkowitz, President Randi Siegel and Vice President Andrea Gray, the club continued its tradition of bringing Broadway to the stage of East Meadow High. The season began on November 21 with the opening of the musical You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, student directed by Michelle Itzkowitz and featuring Michael Hoyt and Bari Koral. The lives of three women as they graduated from high school, entered college and dealt with the real world in Vanities was shown on December 12 and 13. Vanities was directed by Andrea Gray with the assistance of Billy Goldman and starred Kerri Byrne. One of the highlights of the '86 and '87 year was Theatricomp — A Battle of the Classes. Michelle Itzkowitz and Lainie Weiss directed the senior cast in Half Time At Halcyon Days, which won the Best Show Award. Randi Siegel stole the show by winning the Best Actress Award. The Spring season was filled with laughs: the show The Diningroom was directed by Lainie Weiss, and The New Odd Couple was played by Kerri Byrne, Lisa Tiger, Michelle Itzkowitz, and Randi Siegel. Besides the shows, guild members enjoy the parties and friendships that are made during the many hours spent preparing a show for production. 113 (Above Left) Mrs. Cutrone super- vises members of Interact in a mail- ing project. To the Class of 1987 — Although we have tried to capture every possible aspect of the school year, it is virtually impossible to do so. When we took on this job of composing a yearbook, we accepted the hard work and long hours which would make this book a suc- cess. We can clearly say that we feel this book makes a statement of ourselves far above past yearbooks. Everyone is his or her own individual person as we ve learned through this past year. Through the laughter, tears, good times and bad times, we've helped each other grow up. Working on this book, we have learned that there are no classifications. We are all equal classmates. We would like to thank Mr. Sullivan for putting up with our contradicting ideas and for helping us through those endless deadlines. 1 We say good-bye to the Senior alcoves, Mr. Barry's office and the Senior park- ing lot and leave them for the Class of 1988 to carry on their traditions. We can only hope that in the future, cherished memories of the Class of '87 will be recalled when we thumb through these pages. In this book the memories of the Seniors' hearts are not divided, but they are united. However, as the years pass, your yearbook will represent much more. It can be many things to many people. Your yearbook can be a reference book to identify a name or face from the past, a resource book for reunions or a spark for rekindling fond memories when you get together with friends from East Meadow. It can be a veritable time capsule to be reopened on many occasions. The measure of the quality of a yearbook is contained in the answer to the question, How successful has it been in fulfiling the aforementioned functions? I am confident that as the years pass, your yearbook will provide as many fond memories as 1 have received from mine. Good luck in all of your future endeavors!
