Text from Pages 1 - 248 of the 1986 volume:

6 OP€NING This year we celebrate the Centennial of the Statue of Liberty. For one hundred years the torch of the Statue of Liberty has lighted the way of the huddled masses yearning to breathe free on these shores. Lady Liberty is also our symbol, for she holds high her torch, pointing to a glori- ous future. In honor of Lady Liberty we have chosen patriotism as the theme of this yearbook. OPENING 9 STUDENT 10 DIVIDER LIFE DIVIDER 11 Friends ore like gems. They ore something of volue, that mill be treasured os o special, lasting memory or os the assurance of knowing that you'll hove someone special olaioys nearby. The above ore typical Monday morning remarks, for Monday is the one particular day of the week that somehow just doesn't seem . . . right. Somehow, It just shouldn't be. especially after o very hectic ond fun-filled weekend. It's everybody's off day! It’s a lozy day! Nothing gets done. But once the doy gets started ond it gets to be obout two o'clock, then the rest of the week will be just fine ... So. until two o'clock, let s just take it easy, let s sleep in the bock of the doss. Moybe we won't be colled on. Moybe Mr. Klein will be ab- sent today. Moybe Mr. Metviner will forget obout that test. Moybe. MONDRV MORNINGS IS Dating is one of the most important events of high school. It is certainly the only interesting one ond much better than ony of the dosses. From that first guarded glance to the actual going out on o dote, the student experiences the greatest anxiety. There Is always the fear of rejection, but courage is rewarded. Then comes the actual dote, perhaps o movie, o party, moybe even a romantic dinner in some dimly lit restaurant. Then the romance Is on, but will It lost to the ending of the senior year? Just A Date V Transportation Finally, we're Seniors and we have our cars. No more buses, no more taxis, no more bumming rides. The wheels have made us free. UJe’ve come a long way, baby! Bach in the good old days, we rode the bus, the yellow monster. ULIe copied homework and we gossiped. Mostly, we slept In the mornings. In the afternoons we grabbed whatever moved. UJe even walked. TRANSPORTATION 17 FRSHION 19 SENIORITIS There comes o time, deep into thot final year of high school, when seniors heor a distort voice, o for awoy trumpet thot beckons them. Then it is that these seniors succumb to thot dreod ond ancient scourge, the horrible affliction known os senioritis. Behavior becomes erratic: the once devoted senior now shows little interest in studies. The senior cuts doss, foils to prepare for tests, ond feigns o smug ond know-it-oH ottitude. There ore also physical changes, notably o distortion of the anotomy. for the seniors hove become too big for their britches. Medicol science need not seek for for the couse. College opphcotions ore in. doss rank is determined ULlho needs to study? The crossness of youth has token over. Feor not! The molody is seldom fotol. Patience ond time wiD cure oil. 20 SCNIORITIS HRUOW€€N 23 One of CMHS's most veneroble trodltlons Is the Halloween Donee which this year was held on November 2. in the gymnasium. The donee was hosted by the Senior Class and the members of the Key Club. The gathering was truly rep esenta- tive of monsterdom: clowns, nerds, bobies. French maids, ghouls, goblins ond practically everything else showed up for the donee. Probably the SRT's w' iich were held that morning put everyor e in the mood for the dance. fundraising is one of the major activities of practically every club in €ost Meadow High School. The money raised can be used to support various student projects. The items sold vary. Most often the clubs sell candy, for these are sure-fire winners. Practically everybody has a sweet tooth, and at fifty cents a box. M iM's are a bargain to a hungry student. fls the year progresses, clubs turn to other fundraisers. One club will sell a pocket calendar.- another will sell candles for the holidays. FUNDRAISERS 24 fUNDRRISCRS FOOD!!!! Food! UUe lived For It. No motter if we bogged o lunch, ate In the cofeterio, or took the other alternative, UU€ N€€D€D FOOD. But in those forty one minutes, we tried to hit oil the local places: Floy's. ILIhite Costle, Mickey D’s, Mr. Do- nut, ond the ever popular Pizza King. Then we tried to get bock to doss, let's hope the cor doesn't break down. Mr. Krous, you'll nev- er believe whot happened on the way bock from lunch. Veoh, I thought you wouldn't. Jr. Prom Proms toke up o lot of time. First the committee has to be chosen. They hove to choose the holl and whot arguments that con couse. I ujont Leonard’s of Great Neck. My sister got married there. That's too expensive! Do you think we’re millionaires? Somebody else chimes in. How about the Salisbury Inn? The doss of 86 finally chose The Moriott Hotel in Uniondole. The dote was Flpril 20. 1985. There was still lots to do. That special dress still hod to be pur- chased along with the accessories, the tux..., the limo .... the corsage . . . Hey. I forgot. I N€€D R DRT€! 26 JR. PROM - JR. PROM 27 During the week before the Homecoming Gome, students traditionally display their school spirit. This display generally takes some bizarre forms. One day is devoted to the wearing of the school colors and is. appro- priately enough, known os Color Day. There ore also o Jersey Day. o Hot Day. ond o Dress-up Doy. The most populor ore Jer- sey Doy ond Hot Doy. Spirit Week's ontics ore not confined solely to the students. Administrators, teachers, ond secretarial stoff members oil shore in supporting our Jets. The high point of the celebration wos the crowning of the 1985 Home- coming Queen. Candidates Debbie Rdjomi, Kelly Cox. Michelle laValle, Jennifer Morris and Undo Ruggiero were driven to the fifty yard line. The crowd held its breath in suspense ond then . .. Undo Ruggiero was crowned 1985 Homecoming Queen. The arrival of the yearbook provides an interesting glimpse of the past year's activities and a satisfaction of our curiosities as to what activities and which people are the subjects of this book. However, the most enjoyable moments are yet to come. In the future years, this book will be a storehouse of memories to be rekindled at times of reunions or just a casual visit from an alumnus of Cast Meadow High School. However, there is one oreo of which we ore especially proud: our academic program. There is o basic respect for the fundomentols and for scholarship. UJhile no one would consider €MHS on ivory tower, the scholastic program offers o solid college preparatory course. Here our students will leorn the skills which will contribute to their success os they pursue higher goals in education. No matter whot the student's intel- lectual ability might be. the academic program will offer something both chal- lenging and rewording. One aspect of the academic program of which we con be justly proud is the honors program for those students who wish to seek excel- lence. Another aspect of this program is the advance placement courses in which students con eorn college credit while still in high school. A newcomer to the academic scene is the C.UU. The overage students ore adept in creating the most formidable barriers to the expansion of knowledge. Always thinking they ore oheod of the gome, they open their books only on the night before o test. Comforted with the delusive illusion that they remember whot the teacher said in doss, they suddenly discover in o moment of hideous panic that they remember nothing. I've never heard any of this stuff before. ULIhy con't he explain it to us? Then begins the ordeol known os CRAMMING. Most students open their books, skim through the first few pages, check out o few tunes on the radio, return desultorily to their text to skim through o few more pages, ond then in response to o grumbling stomach, head for the kitchen to raid the fridge. O, well, it's bock to the books. I really must get through this stuff. Maybe I con coll More or Allison or Rob. Maybe they hove good notes.” At this point our brosh ond confident student also starts looking around for small, tiny pieces of paper on which to copy, in micro-dot fashion, oil the work of the lost two weeks. Maybe the teacher will be absent!! 120 STUDVING education at €ast Meadow High School is not o strictly theoreticol offoir. Knowledge is not something that remains on on abstract plane.
