RESUME 1985 EAST MEADOW HIGH SCHOOL EAST MEADOW, NEW YORK 11554 VOLUME TWENTY-EIGHT Title Page 1 DR. FRANK SARACINO, PRINCIPAL Opening 3 .ABSOLUT tatftcnoft Opening 7 9 10 Friendship Lisa Scire and Maureen Kitson always keep their priorities on the tops of their heads. Ray Winicki loves the odds. Carolyn Faggione and Gina Bartoli are definitely friends forever. FRIENDSHIP Whenever I need a friend. You always seem to be there. You helped me with my problems And our joys together we share. I can't imagine life Without a friend like you. Once we are together. We are an inseparable two. And all the fun I've shared with you Can never be replaced. Together we had many good times And conquered the problems we faced. The sight of a camera sure brings out the best in people. So I want you to know That I am always here, If you ever need a friend To make your thoughts clear. And when I must leave you. As many good friends sometimes part, I leave you with good memories And an important place in my heart! Friendship 11 FOUR MINUTE FLURRY The bell rings and 1200 peo- ple begin to move through the hallways. A guy kisses his girlfriend goodbye; ten to twenty people hang out in what they claim is the β€œSenior Alcove. Our hallways serve as arteries between classes, gathering places, bulletin boards, or walls to be decorated before a big game. Twenty years from now students will still be shoving through the hallways. Even though faces change, hallways endure forever. Liz Wolf struggles with her bag on the way to gym class. Scott Katcher takes a brisk walk through the hallways during class. Debra Mitchko uses her locker for pinups of her ideal men. 12 Four Minute Flurry Although it's a short four minutes, friends always seem to find Chris Fucci awaits the bell to class. each other. Four Minute Flurry 13 Jennifer Rosen and Debbie Gabelman let their spirits shine at the pep rally. A current of excitement always runs through the school on the day of the pep rally. The excitement spills over from the gym, through the halls where cheerleaders are putting up the traditional blue and gold streamers and into the classrooms. Seniors, juniors, sophomores, faculty, and alumni pour into the gym. The bleachers are packed with screaming students who demonstrate to a deaf world their unbounded enthusiasm. Finally, Mr. Kostynick steps to the microphone and introduces the Rockettes, who perform a high-kicking routine. The Varsity Cheerleaders follow with a Hello cheer. Finally, the high point is reached. Mr. Boyle introduces the Varsity Football Players. The crowd goes wild. Other teams are introduced, but the heroes of the pep rally are the Varsity Football Jets. With the help of the band, the Rockettes perform their routines during the pep rally. The Varsity Cheerleading squad awaits the chance to perform the cheers they practice every day. The faces of a few East Meadow High School students are seen at a nearby diner before the pep rally begins. 14 Pep Rally Cheerleading captain Tina Kalkstein gives directions before the big performance of the cheerleading squad. Varsity football teammates Dave Kimmel, Lenny Giambald, Rob ladevaio, and Rob Petrullo gather at their decorated cars to talk about the upcoming pep rally. Pep Rally 15 It's a wonder why we haven't gotten thrown out of Burger King yet T.G.I.F. It's 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon. Those last three minutes before the bell rings seem endless. Then finally you hear that precious sound and you are free for the weekend. It's time for friends, parties, dates, and cruising. It doesn't seem to matter where you plan to go because everybody seems to end up at the local hangout, namely PIZZA KING. Saturday afternoons are devoted to sports from football to lacrosse, but Saturday night parties are the times to remember. Come Sunday you are usually back to your senses, and it's time to hit the books with hopes that next weekend will be just as good. Alyssa Sanders counts her funds for the A smile is worth a thousand words! weekend. 16 Weekends Patti Klose offers Paul Riendeau a rose. Bronwyn Volpe and Jill Bouza show us that timeΒ like, these are made for special friends. JUNIOR PROM It is a night both long awaited and long remembered. There's the visit to the beauty parlor and last minute shopping. There is the suit to be purchased with the new pair of shoes. And of course, the car must shine. The Junior Prom was held at Antun's. No one really remembers the food or what records the D.J. played, but we do remember the Prom as part of our treasured year. John Comer boogies down, as all the others gather round. 18 Prom The reflections of Gina Simon, Ray Winicki, Timmy Shanahan, and Alyssa Sanders will always recall their happiness. Special friendships are always treasured. Symbols are just one way of remembering such a joyous event as a junior prom. Prom 19 The ladies of the Class of '85 have always displayed lots of spirit, and nowhere was it more evident than in Heraea XXVIII. Although they were not the vic- tors, they did display that energy and imagination which has made them remarkable over the years. The Class of '85's theme was β€œThriller. Their entrance in Monster Masquerade was a sure winner. Dressed as ghouls and cor- pses, they danced their way past the competing senior class's Magic Touch. However, they were defeated in volleyball in a close (17-14) game. The Class of '84 also triumphed in aerobic routines. The heartbreaker, however, was square dancing. Their Frankensteins and Brides of Frankenstein were imaginative and cute, but the Class of '85 lost the competition. Wouldn't you love to get bit by this vampire? Lisa Asparro and Jill Bouza win the Frankenstein look alike and pairs dancing competition. 20 Heraea HERAEA All right, who put the wall here? The Class of '85 has definitely got the SPIRIT. Heraea 21 Where are they supposed to be? Not at the Empress Diner! Food 23 Renee Scholl and Michael Landsman need a pick-me-up during class. Sue Lorentzen, 1983 Homecoming Queen; Barbra Kelly, 1984 Homecoming Queen and her court: Maria Paradiso, CindyAnn Grippo, Karen Kilgallon and Cyndy George. 26 Homecoming Homecoming was not just fun. it was also an important game for the Jets. The East Meadow Jets faced Lawrence in the 1984 Homecom- ing game. The day was overcast, and cool, but the spectators were warmed by the enthusiasm of the team and by the halftime show presented by the Marching Band, the Rockettes, the Cheerleaders, and by members of the classes of 1985,1986, and 1987. The band presented a rousing rendition of β€œShe Works Hard for the Money and they were joined by the Rockettes and Cheerleaders w'ho did their intricate routines. The high point of the ceremony was the crowning of the 1984 Homecoming Queen, Barbra Kelly, who was joined by representatives of the local government, the East Meadow School Board, and the ad- ministration of the school. A halftime parade followed with floats prepared by each of the classes. Queen Barbra Kelly pre- sided over the Homecoming Dance that evening. Ron and Nancy came to throw jelly beans at the crowd in order to win some votes. Homecoming 27 Mopeds, bikes, motorcycles, and good old foot power are some of the ways students get to school, but the vast majori- ty take the school bus. Herds of these orange monsters crisscross the neighborhood before and after school, pick- ing up and then discharging their human cargo at East Meadow High School. The morning ride is usually mellow; everybody is too tired to do anything. But, the ride home can be rambunc- tious and part of the happy memories of our high school years. The bus is late β€” again! For Laura Cavallaro, Ricky Mai, and Diana Celada crutches are the on means of transportation. Who needs the bus, when Rob Wright has his bike’ 28 Transportation It is a litlle crowded for the Rockettes going to a football game? Chris Fucci and his Walkman won best male costume. 30 Halloween Dance The 50's come alive! Chippendales hit East Meadow High. The mysterious ghostbusters showed up at the dance. Cary Scope looks cool and comfortable. The Halloween Dance is an East Meadow tradition, and this year's was no exception. Students began gathering in the gymnasium at 7:30 on the night of the Saturday follow- ing Halloween. By tradition, we are always late, but lateness gives us an excuse to dress up twice. The high point of the evening was the Chippendale Guys (Len Giam- bald. Matt Buzzeo, Danny Cordova, Gerard Catalanello and David Schwartz.) Best Costume Award went to the Sony Walkman (Chris Fucci) and Pinocchio (Eileen Blitz). Best couple was Gary McGuinness and Patti Klose who came as Rag- gedy Ann and Andy. After the dance our costumed ghosts and goblins faded away into the night to their favorite diner or to the β€œRocky Horror Picture Show. Halloween Dance 31 Lougene Nappo takes some time to relax before the next customer comes. Debbie Pape and Jeff Goldklank look as if they're having fun while working at the E. M. Flick. JOBS Everybody needs money, and the students of East Meadow High School are no exception. Like the rest of the world, our students get out after school and scram- ble for a buck. After all, education is supposed to prepare one for life; but the after school job prepares them for real life. Lots of students work with food. They wait on tables in the fast food joints in the area. Others work in stores. They bag groceries in Pathmark and they slice cold cuts in the local deli. They work in the stock room at For- tunoff's and they pump gas at the local service stations. They are a vital part of the local economy. At the same time they are preparing themselves for some future career and easing the financial strain on their parents. Joannie Maniaci and Laura Zelenak work together in the Sporting Goods Department of Modell's. 32 Ways to Make a Living I didn't eat the cookie, I swear! Debbie Lepore is amazed at the number of coupons her customer has. Ways to Make a Living 33 Paul Prisco and Joe Krasniewicz enjoy their tunes during class. MUSIC East Meadow High School echoes with the sounds of music, and students are constantly immersed in music. Some of this music is part of the curriculum. Much of it springs from the natural desire of young people to surround themselves with popular songs. The course of study offers classes in music theory, symphonic band, jazz ensemble, string quartet and marching band. This is the more formal music of the school. However, popular taste demands music of a different kind. Disco, new wave, rock, and even jazz are the steady listening diet of most students. WLIR, WPLJ, Z100 and KISS are where the action's at. Steve Bellomo finds his enjoyment of music in playing th drums. 34 Music Danny Cordova needs his box everywhere, including the football games. Evan Mandery and Dr. Koenig spend their Saturday afternoons watching our school's football team. Music 35 SNOW Watch out, Diana! One of the main functions of the clubs in this school is fundraising, an activity that has a double purpose. The money raised can be used to support various student projects; the items sold, most often candy, can be used to satisfy the perpetual craving of hungry young students whose palates are not ap- peased by the delicious offer- ings of the cafeteria. Ice cream sandwiches, M M's, Kit-Kats, Milky Ways, flying saucers and lollipops keep the students from dying of hunger before the end of the school day. Popular non-food fund- raisers were carnations, towels, hearts, ghosts, bumper stickers and calendars. Ms. Armstrong helps the Humor Magazine raise money by making Balloon-A-Grams Noreen Paris supports the senior class by buying a flying saucer. 42 Fundraisers Sara Taubman sells candy bars for FBLA. Liz Wolf helps the Key Club by selling lollipops. FUNDRAISERS The sophomore class sells food to prepare for upcoming expenses. Student Life 45 .v.v.v.v. gvav. Joe Krazniewicz and John Kouril meet some old friends in the library. Theresa Golia does some extra reading at the library. 48 Library Research Barbra Grau spends her free period trying to decide which book to read. Steven Mercante does some studying in the East Meadow Public Library for an A.P. Biology exam LIBRARY RESEARCH The library is a truly magical place. It has so many useful functions. It's arrangement of little nooks and corners and discreet stacks lends itself perfectly to romance. If you want to meet that special person and avoid the prying eyes and comments of others, the library is the perfect place. If clandestine romantic meetings are not necessarily your immediate interest, then the library also serves the useful function of being a hangout, a perfect gathering place to meet old friends and to exchange the news of the dav. Of course, one must mention its function as a storage house of information. Occa- sionally there are times when a student does need to do some school-related library work. Then that huge collection of books, magazines, essays, and microfilms becomes a treasurehouse of information. Reports are completed, books are borrowed, and the stu- dent is saved from failure. Library Research 49 Honor classes are too much to handle early in the morning for Alyssa Sanders. 50 Honors Classes Steven Mercante and Kim Hermann light up A P. Bio! WOW! But what is it, Mr. Pasetsky? Ralph Semeraro and Monique Bopp do some extra studying to pass their honor classes. Honors Classes 51 Robert Peterson uses homeroom to prepare the day's assignments. Joseph Pirtt prefers to catch up on overdue sleep. Steve Toth puts the final touches on a composition before his English class begins. 52 Studying Debbie Pape takes advantage of a handy windowsill on a sunny day to catch upon her studying. One of the realities of life at East Meadow High School is the necessity for studying. No matter how students may try to avoid it, even- tually there is that unavoidable test, that absolutely necessary report, or that mandatory term paper. Students have to hit the books once in a while. There's no way around it. Since their lives are so completely crammed with activities, sports, clubs, after school jobs and a million other things, students have to find those few spare minutes to keep their heads above the academic water. Pictured on these pages are students grabbing those minutes of precious study time. Homeroom, the hallways, and even a boring lecture during class can all provide prized opportunity for study. Studying 53 A cosmetology student washes Mr. Kaley's hair as he dreams about a winning lacrosse season. 54 Putting Ideas to Work PUTTING IDEAS TO WORK Greg Blouin, Lenny Giambald, and John Simko are figuring out how a stereo works. East Meadow High School is a truly practical place. Our students do not fit into some educator's preconceived mold. Students are different; each has his or her own skills and interests and works according to an individual pace. For this reason, in addition to strictly academic classrooms. East Meadow of- fers a wide variety of vocational sub- jects. Within its precincts, the East Meadow student can find classes in A.P. Calculus or in Auto Mechanics. There are classes in Humanities and in Radio Shop. Within each class students can find their own levels and meet their own challenges. Creativity also finds its place in East Meadow High School. There are classes in Creative Writing and in Fashion Design, in Basic Art and in Woodworking. The East Meadow student is an in- dividual and the school tries to meet in- dividual needs and interests. Putting Ideas to Work 55 Betty Lynn Pittala prepares a drawing in Art class. S.A.T S One of the hurdles that seniors have to leap over in their search for education is the Scholastic Achievement Test, commonly known as the SAT's. This examina- tion measures the student's verbal and quantitative ability. In the weeks before the SAT's, students pore over word lists, work on verbal analogies and brush up on their math. Some even take special cram courses after school and on Saturdays. Why is so much energy spent preparing for the SAT's? A higher score gives the student a better chance of getting into the special colleges of their choice. The gym is very quiet before the testing begins. 56 S.A.T.'s five minute break provides Ricky Mai with an ortunity to stretch. een Paris ponders over a hard problem. COLLEGE BOUND Valerie Parker explores all possibilities for future education. Chris Campone and Jackie Huber check out a career in the military. 58 College Bound Wendy Rappaport considers where she will study nursing. Most East Meadow students look forward to additional schooling following their graduation from high school. For some, it may be a form of technical education which may in- clude secretarial school, nursing, or trade school. For the rest, future education will be a four year college program. The scramble for admission to col- lege is not easy. There are applica- tions, essays, visits to colleges, inter- views, SAT's, long conferences with one's favorite guidance counselor β€” the list is never ending. But the senior year draws to a close; and for all, we hope that their happiest memories will be the years they spent at East Meadow High. Carolyn Faggione appears bewildered by the number of choices she has for future education. Each year the Na- tional Honor Society holds a Scholars' Banquet for all EMHS students with averages of 90 per cent or more. In order to hold the banquet, money has to be raised. Club members sell candy and cakes to offset the cost of the banquet. NHS members wait for the meeting to begin. The Jet Gazette is, along with the yearbook, the only publication at East Meadow High School thai relates school events to the student public. In a sense, the Jet Gazette is the eyes and ears of the school. Under the direction of Editors- in-Chief Evan J. Mandery and An- drea Wicks, the school newspaper tries to keep the students and faculty aware of current happen- ings in the East Meadow school community. The newspaper staff also tries to be a barometer of stu- dent opinions on current issues. During the current school year, the newspaper has made several improvements; including the establishment of a Feature Teacher article, and has also in- troduced an Inquiring Photographer column. The other editors, Andrew Reader, Anand Pandya and Michael Sonnenstein, are also deeply involved in putting out a meaningful and sometimes con- troversial newspaper. It all started with several singing showcases, including Sophomore Orientation, Thanksgiving Dinner for senior citizens, the Ad- ministrative Dinner, and perfor- mances in the children's ward at local hospitals and at the A. Holly Patterson Home during the holi- day season. In January the Guild presented Taken in Marriage. Debbi Weinstein plays a character who likes to share some juicy gossip. The children's show, Winnie-the-Pooh, directed by Gina Simon, toured the elementary schools in early February. At this point, the Guild's plans for the rest of the year include Thea-tri-comp, the grueling battle between the classes which will be held in March. It will contain your memories, your friends, and your experiences. The staff and 1 have tried to capture the spirit of our class, and hope this book will be as much a part of you as it is a part of us. 7 would like to thank all of those who not only worked on the book, but also contributed a part of themselves to it. I wish I could thank everyone personally, but space does not permit. Jill, you always pulled through on those deadlines and seemed to come up with the right ideas when they were needed most. Matt and Marcy, I must thank you for the great job you both did on the artwork. It really added a touch of class that made this book truly outstanding. To the rest of the staff, you all played an equally important role in the production of our yearbook. To my friends and family, especially Mike, Alan, Kim, and Liz, thank you for putting up with my cranky days while I was facing those endless deadlines. The support you gave me helped me to hang m there and make it through this nightmare. I have saved the best for last, Mr. Sullivan. For without you this book would have never made it to the publisher. The endless hours, the pictures you had to take, and putting up with my many moods were all a part of making this yearbook a success. Now that the nightmare is over, wasn't it worth putting up with the late meetings and hassles of making those deadlines? I hope that in the future you, The EMHS Class of 1985, will have a chance to glance back at these pages from time to time. I can only wish that the words and pictures in this book come together for you and remind you of your years at EMHS. I wish you the best of luck and happiness always. A Year We Will Remember. These are the years for making critical deci- sions and lasting friendships. It is a time of peaks and valleys when adolescence is transformed to adulthood; a time when you experience the accompanying joys and the sorrows, the days of solace and the days of turmoil and proud moments and disappoint- ments, all of which constitute the process of growth. As the years progress, your yearbook will be the vehicle which will allow you to recapture these memories. May you use it in good health and may all our memories be fond ones. Best wishes for health and happiness in all your future endeavors. Sincerely, Frank SaracinoX J Principal (_y Dr. Frank Saracino Richard Gruber Assistant Principal William W. CLASS OF '85 THIS BUD'S FOR YOU!!! 230 Senior Sayings CYNTHIA GRANT A Memory Thoughts of You While sitting alone With nothing to do, My mind became filled With thoughts of you. Things I should have said, Things I should have done, The expression of words That make two as one. Thoughts of the good times We shared together. Memories of you That will last forever. β€” Cynthia Grant 232 Cynthia Grant There was so much about him that we didn't know. We took him, I'm afraid, so much for granted. But that's the way it is. It always seems we say The things we mean, the things we mean the most To say, and never get around to saying them, only When they're gone. And then we say a lot. Maybe we're shy and cover our true feelings with A casual camarderie, the banter, the jokes, and Let it go at that. Who knew, for instance, that Mike Kostynick founded The Kiwanis Club in East Meadow or was once Man Of the Year? That was before my time β€” or that he Had been both Chief and Commissioner of the EMVFD. Who knew about his wartime experiences as a Marine Back in WWII? Or that he played on the old Brooklyn Dodgers football team? That's all news to me. But we knew the important things β€” we understood The kind of guy he was. Decent, upright, a good Family man with a smile and a joke, and he knew What he was doing, too. They talk a lot about Role models. Well, Mike was one if ever you wanted One. His students and collegues β€” we knew all that. We know we'll miss him, too. We'll miss you, Mike. We'll miss you very much.
