UUH TUW East McKeesport. situated on cx beau- tiful plateau overlooking the Turtle Creek Valley. is very dear and close to all our hearts. Early records show that East Mc- Keesport was a part of a tract called Scanderoon, an Indian name. At its early stage ol growth, there were no good roads nor exceptional means of travel. The old Greensburg Turnpike lnow the Lincoln Highway? gave ac- cess to the outside world. It was com- mon to see a herd of sheep or oxen being driven along the highway which was then a sea of mud. Travel- ers passing through East McKeesport would change horses here at the crossroads and then go on with their journey. Life was very simple then, but the simplicity of it all has made our town a typical American town. Today our town has grown into a residential dis- trict, housing families of industrial workers. Here the early inhabitants lived and shared their joys and sorrows, and here we live to carry on the yester- days, todays, and tomorrows ot OUR TOWN.

Youth needs this spirit to meet the perplexing problems and uncertainties of the age. Since the bombing of Hiroshi- ma the future has seemed insecure, for the fear of an atomic war has loomed large on the horizon several times. Yet there are so many prom- ising fields ot invention and devel- opment that we must look past the world's darkness into the rays ot light and hope wherein lie our hopes and dreams for the future. Today is still oursg the fate of to- morrow lies with us. We must be willing and able to answer as did a wise man long ago. When asked what he would do if he were told he was to die at sunset that day, he said, I would finish hoeing my garden. We, too, must go on hoe- ing our gardens and living our lives to the best that is in us.
