Early records show that East Mc- Keesport was a part of a tract called Scanderoon, an Indian name. At its early stage ol growth, there were no good roads nor exceptional means of travel. The old Greensburg Turnpike lnow the Lincoln Highway? gave ac- cess to the outside world. It was com- mon to see a herd of sheep or oxen being driven along the highway which was then a sea of mud. Travel- ers passing through East McKeesport would change horses here at the crossroads and then go on with their journey. Life was very simple then, but the simplicity of it all has made our town a typical American town. Today our town has grown into a residential dis- trict, housing families of industrial workers. Here the early inhabitants lived and shared their joys and sorrows, and here we live to carry on the yester- days, todays, and tomorrows ot OUR TOWN. 1 ,Wi For-fffl1,'i.'QiC-f Q-it, a - ef-1 ff' ff f no Z E .5 X 7 U ' X lrzxll Us v L Z AA XXX 'X an . , 4, xxx X Il ff : QV 1-Q,-all f4 fgal eg Y 4--J rf? Youth needs this spirit to meet the perplexing problems and uncertainties of the age. Since the bombing of Hiroshi- ma the future has seemed insecure, for the fear of an atomic war has loomed large on the horizon several times. Yet there are so many prom- ising fields ot invention and devel- opment that we must look past the world's darkness into the rays ot light and hope wherein lie our hopes and dreams for the future. Today is still oursg the fate of to- morrow lies with us. We must be willing and able to answer as did a wise man long ago. When asked what he would do if he were told he was to die at sunset that day, he said, I would finish hoeing my garden. We, too, must go on hoe- ing our gardens and living our lives to the best that is in us. HUAHIJ UP SIIHIJIJL IJIHEETUHS Each ot us recognizes the wisdom and under- standing displayed by the Board ot School Directors. They have provided a suitable education that has prepared us to take a creditable place in the world. Not only did they give us an adequate educational program, but they also tried to improve the facilities We already had. Each an outstanding, respected citizen, although busy with other Work, took time to see that we were starting out on the right pathway in lite. Having given their time and efforts so freely, the tribute we pay them now is well deserved. The class ot '49 Wishes to commend them for their services to us and to the community. All Mr. F. We found many new additions to the class and to the fac- ulty, and in the office was Miss Gillis, our new secre- tary. Two weeks preceding the opening of school the football team was sent by the Boosters to Maple Grove for pre-season training. The freshmen that honored the squad were Alfer, Cramer, Radulovic, McCurdy, Beck, Stark, Powelson, Rehrer, Pickford, Baker, and Craig. The end of the season found an undefeated team, trained under the tireless efforts of Coach Weaver. We missed the championship playoffs through lack of points. The successful season was celebrated with a banquet sponsored by the Kiwanis and the Boosters at the Penn McKee Hotel. The IUN-SEN NEWS, under Mrs. Swauger, again won honors in the P.S.P.A. contest. Under Mr. Weaver, our basketball team also saw an undefeated season. It entered the W.P.I.A.L. finals but was eliminated in the second game. An outstanding Spring Music Festival was held under the direction of Miss Mary Carbines. The term ended with the school picnic at Kennywood, and we were all happy, anticipating three months of vacation fun. TENTH YEAR We felt even prouder as sophomores when we could look down on someone.. Our football team didn't do quite so well this year. Those on the team from the class of '49 were Cramer, McCurdy, Craig, Stark, Radulovic, Pickford, Rehrer. Baker, Hodder, Czarnecki, and Winkle. 'I'he end of the season showed five wins, two losses, and one tie. The IUN-SEN NEWS again won honors, placing first in the P.S.P.A. contest and second place in the C.S.P.A. contest. Adrienne Curry, Dolores Furlong, Shirley Larson, and Charlotte Rowley were chosen cheerleaders. The chorus, band, and orchestra, under the direction of Miss Carbines held a winter festival. Solo numbers were presented by Marjorie Shields, Iean Cortright, and Audrey Hilt. Those who took Latin observed Latin week by visit- ing Buhl Planetarium, where Iim Alfer's project was on display. A Latin quiz was broadcast and Marjorie Shields won second place. Basketball season showed Craig, Stark, Beck, Radulo- vic, Pickford, and Hondal trying to help gain a victory for East High. The season brought twelve wins and six defeats. We had a fairly good baseball season. Schliffka, Al- fer, Craig, Cramer, Beck, Pickford, Stark, and Radulo- vic helped to make possible four wins and three de- feats. By the time May rolled around, most of us had spring fever and couldn't wait for vacation. We all went to Kennywood cmd enjoyed ourselves. ELEVENTH YEAR Welll Here we were members of that glorious group of humans called the juniors. The football team, under the capable guidance of Coach Meise, .enjoyed one of the greatest seasons in the history of our school, winning eight and tying one. Members of this team from our class were Craig, Cram- er, Czarnecki, Hodder, Radulovic, Pickford, Rehrer, Win- kle, Stark, Baker, Polka, and McCurdy. Our band per- formed just as admirably as the team. The majorettes CLASS HISTIJHY were Betty Brown, Audrey Farmer, and Audrey Hilt. At the Friday moming pep meetings were the cheerleaders Curry, Rowley, Larson, and Furlong. The basketball and baseball teams also turned in successful seasons. The newspaper staff, under the direction of Mrs. Swauger, also brought fame to our school and placed highly tn the P.S.P.A. contest and the C.S.P.A. contest. The junior play, under the direction of Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Suddaby, failed to win any Academy Awards but Iune Mad played successfully to a large audience. Iane Carbines brought East McKeesport honor by participating in the Western Pennsylvania Band Festi- val at Canonsburg. The highlight of the year was the Iunior Prom, held at the Penn McKee Hotel in McKeesport. The oriental theme was carried out very well. The year ended with the annual picnic and everyone left school to seek greener pastures elsewhere. TWELFTH YEAR At last, our big year. the year we had been waiting for, from the day we walked into the building as fresh- men. We were the seniors of East McKeesport High School. Our football team had another highly successful year on the gridiron. Among our senior boys-who performed brilliantly all year were Craig, Cramer, Czarnecki, Hod- der, Radulovic, Pickford, Rehrer, Winkle, Stark, Baker, and Polka. The team compiled a record of seven vic- tories against two defeats: Rick Pack and Henry Rymarowicz left our class to serve Uncle Sam in the Army. 'l'he Key Club, under Mr. Iones and Mr. Meise, with six senior boys as members, sold scorecards at the home football games. The class officers for the 49'ers were Alfred Thal- heimer, president: Dave Cramer, vice-president: Dolores Furlong, secretary. One of the highlights of the year was the romantic Christmas dance, sponsored by the Senior Tri-Hi-Y girls. A big name orchestra supplied the music. The basketball team took right up where the football team left off and rang up an impressive list of victories. Among the dashing seniors who were bulwarks of the squad were Radulovic, Craig, Hondal, Beck, and Stark. And then suddenly spring was here, and the seniors scurried around the building like a lot of busy little elves, autographing yearbooks for admiring undergrad- uates, cramming for final high school examinations, and above all preparing for graduation. However, we found time to atteno the prom, sponsored by the erstwhile juniors, in final tribute to the magnificent, departing seniors. The baseball team, with several potential big league stars, provided plenty of entertainment for some of our after school hours. Among the departing seniors who were playing their final interscholastic athletics were Radulovic, Craig, Stark, Cramer, Polka, Schliffka, Pick- ford, and Beck. At last the time had arrived. After many hours of strenuous practicing, we were ready to say goodbye with Senior Morning, Baccalaureate, and Commence- ment. We assumed a cloak of poise and dignity. Happi- ness bloomed on each familiar face, but the honest eye betrayed the sadness in the heart. How true are the oft- quoted words of the immortal bard: Parting is such sweet sorrow. After the annual picnic at Kennywood and with our diplomas in our hands, we marched to a new and greater station in life. px ,,i.. Eliza Rogers: And did you notice the name of the manu- facturing company on those that were here last week? Al- most everyone I looked at read McCurdy and Craig Manufacturing Company. I: Did you hear about Craig's running a bus line up Woodmont on the side? He says there's no money in the manufacturing of rockets. He and his wife, Ianie Carbines, seem to be doing rather well, though. By the way, Mc- Curdy has invented a new kind of car. It's called the It car. E: Speaking of old friends, I wonder whatever happened to Marjorie Shields and lean Cortright. They had such lovely voices. I: Oh, I thought you'd heard. Marjorie is on a singing tour abroad and Iean is at the Met. They are doing quite well for themselves. E: Yes, they are. But the kids I remember most are lean May and Ioe Stark. She's a nurse now, you know, and he is a football star at a little college on earth called D.O.P.E. I: Speaking of nurses, I saw a down right cute one at- tending that snooty Miss Rowley last week end. She just couldn't be separated from her dog Fido. lSudden interruption byianitors Berkoben, Smith, Pick- ford, and Winkle. Each carries mops and scrub buckets. With signs of recognition to those present, they dutifully begin scrubbing.l E. Here comes Big Bob Baker with his troupe. I hope they have a good floor show for a change. Let's watch them run through it. I: Run through it. You mean run over it, but I'll watch anyhow. Look who is in his gang. Why, there's Marie Maley, Dee O'Hern, Ida Orosz, and Bea Schaffer. Haven't seen them since '49? They're some of the chorus girls. Wow! Get an eyefull of their torch singer, Terry Maurizi. Why, there's Edward Mandich accompanying her. Hey, Shalkowski, give this to that sing- er over there. fCook takes it to her.l She reminds me of that girl Dot Zoller, who was voted Miss Moonglow of '68. The Mars Chronicle certainly played that up. E: Here comes their announcer Bill Rehrer. I know he's good: at least he talks all the time anyhow. I: Speaking of talkative people, can you ever forget Nie- wiara, Pack, cmd Pommer? They talked a mile a minute. Dot Niewiara is a telephone operator now, but Iean Pack and Ann Pommer are secretaries to Radulovic's Detective Agency. I: Yes, I know. He just won a case for Wadoo Polka about someone's body. Since Wadoo's a mortician he has been quite successful, but there was a mixup over whom he preserved. Lois Rankin said it was her chauffeur but Anna Mae Sandin said it was hers. I never did find out who it was. E: By the way, whatever happened to the gas station gene? I: Oh. you mean Alter, Gebhart, and Beard. E: Yes. I: Alfer's Refining Company opened another new office last week and Gebhart and Beard have been promoted to assistants at the Sanity Fill. E: Whatever happened to the rest of the gang? I: Dewey Landstrom is the chief sports writer for the New York Dimes. Dave Cramer is the president of Bolumbia University. E: Did you hear about the Frornmell twins? I : No, what are they doing now? E: They opened an art shop in New York. One of the twins dropped in the other day and said Audrey Hilt and Virginia Cipra are their chief customers. I: Remember Eicher and Czarnecki? E: Yes? What about them? I: Eicher opened a Packard garage and Clem runs a Dodge garage. E: I was talking to Wilma Fowler and Marion Christopher the other day. They said that Audrey Farmer, Natalie Ere- mic, La Verne Daugherty, and Rose Cardo have settled down to peaceful married lives. Ioe Hondal and lim Baer have opened their own vegetable market. And Duke Lang has just made his tenth million making Harper's Hobby Horses. Hughe is the chief salesman for the nags. I: Whatever became of those other nice looking girls In our class, Eliza? E: Why Dolores Furlong and Lorena Grimm are now Sen- ators in Congress. Betty Koelsch is a music teacher and Shirley Larson opened her newest reducing salon in Chi- cago last week. Adrienne Curry is the head of a modeling studio and Dick Hammer is her chief talent scout. So far. he has brought in such fa:mous models as Margaret The Look Lacivita, Sylvia The Eyes Basile, along with Helen Kelly and Ioanne Lynn. Helen Kondrich and Marilyn Klim- ek model there, too. By the way, what happened to lack Beck and Betty Brown? I: Beck's Law Firm is doing a wonderful business and Betty, of course, is Mrs. Beck now. His secretary, he told me, is the most efficient Angelina Alfieri. E: I heard he has gotten Hardman out of some lawsuits about twelve times. Look! Here's one of those new inven- tions called the nose muff. Al Thalheimer invented it to keep his nose warm, but after you get it on you can't breathe. I : Maybe he planned it that way. E: You're impossible. Did you see my new hat? How do you like it? L: Tell me what it is first and then I'll express my opinion. E: Why it's an original Wilcox, Starr, and Schliffka crea- tion. It's called the last rose of summer. I: Looks like it, foo. THE .IU IIJH PI. Y After many evenings of practice, mingled with many a laugh, the class of '49 pre- sented a three-act comedy, Iune Mad. Penny Wood, like many other girls of fifteen, was undecided about a career. She considered dancing, writing and finally ended up with glider-crazy Chuck Harris. Chuck caused his father a great many wor- ries, but in the end his father consented to his glider building. There were several love affairs which added to the romantic angle of the play. There were many committees to help with the play, such as the property com- mittee and the make-up committee. The property committee had a great number of props, including golf balls, lamps and ten- nis rackets, and even ice cream cones. Under the leadership ot the two able di- rectors, Mrs. Iane Taylor and Mrs. Irene Suddaby, the play was a success. Seventy girls from the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades blend their voices in delightful mel- odies under the direction of Mr. Edward Miller. The girls gained worthwhile knowl- edge of music and the art of singing, as well as providing a source of entertainment for themselves and the entire school. The group assisted in special holiday as- semblies, as at Thanksgiving and Christ- mas, by presenting appropriate numbers. Parents and friends were entertained at the P.T.A. Founders' Day program. Outside ap- pearances added to the group's popularity. These included a program given for the Lions' Club. Many months were given to the preparation of songs to be sung in the spring festival.
