NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The East Maueh Chunk Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools was organized in 1932 with four members. Since its organization, sixty-one members have been elected to the society. Two of these are now members of the faculty and hold graduate membership on the local chapter. Members of the Society are chosen by a committee of teachers selected by the Super- vising Prineipal. They are chosen on the basis of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. fifteen per cent of the graduating class being selected each year. DEBATING In order to teach pupils to think on a question rather than repeat memorized speeches, new rules for conducting debates throughout the county were drawn up by the Carbon Ciounty Principals' Association. They provide that each debate must be on a different question: a school may have as many teams as can be formed: and one judge is to render the final decision. This method proved very successful and is well liked. East Maueh Chunk's season closed with three decisions for and three against our teams. ORATORY The oratorical contestants. under the direction of Miss Newcomb, made a fine showing for East Maueh Chunk High School. Mary Jane Exner. '43, was awarded first place in the Carbon County Girls' Oratorical Contest held in the Summit Hill High School, March 27, 1942. This is the second successive year Mary Jane has brought home this honor. Robert Clare. '45, placed third in the Carbon County Boys' Oratorical Contest held in the Maueh Chunk High School. March 20, 1942. Robert, a freshman, will have other oppor- tunities to bring home first place. Page Twenty-five
