We would like to thank him for his never-ending, cheerful support. Since our freshmen year he has donated his time and energy to our fund¬ raisers, been at our sporting events, and acti- vites, and has brought us closer together as a class. Mr. Cooley’s geniality and reassuring com¬ ments have helped us through many tough and frightening spots: he truly had a special way of making the High School a second home for all of us. The evident personal interest and affection Mr. Cooley so warmly shows to each student has set him apart from the other teachers. Mr. Cooley has always been there for us and we appreciate it. This book is yours, Mr. Cooley, from a class of friends. With my counterparts in this incredibly in¬ human, savage sport, I learned the secrets of stalking and pursuing on the seemingly in¬ nocent squares of black and white. Our opponents were quite unaware of our bestial intentions and our animalistic behavior took them completely by surprise. Back (L-R); Dawn Khal, Victoria Carlson. Angela D’Angelo, Andrea Hoover. The Spartans struggled through a tough early season sched¬ ule. In that six game stretch the gridmen tied Division I powers, Holyoke and Agawam, and lost a hard-fought battle to Division II champion. Palmer. Seriors Joe VanValkerburg, Pete Maruca and Bill Fielding led the team to its first victory over Greenfield. The Spartans went on to two back to back wins after the Greenfield victory with¬ out the services of quarterback VanValkenburg, halfback Rob Stellato and noseguard Bill LaPlante, all sidelined by injuries. Rallied by the strong play of Barrett and Maruca, the team played well for the remainder of the season. With the entire offensive and defensive lines returning, and such key players as Villeneuve. Their record of 6-7-4 could have been 9 wins if not for bad breaks. The team had a stunning 0-0 tie with Western Mass, powerhouse Lud¬ low, which marred the latter’s per¬ fect record. Against Chicopee Comp, (ranked 5th. in Western Massachusetts), Jeff Buzzelle scored a penalty kick late in the game to beat them 2-1. Led by Tri- Captains Kevin Duperre, Jeremy Shurtleff and Scott Dunlop, the de¬ fense more than held their own on the defensive side of the field while the offense was kept up by Sophomore Sensation”, Kenny Smith with 13 goals and 3 assists, and by Jeff Buzzelle who posted II points. Other wins against Long- meadow, Northampton, Amherst, Holyoke and Westfield enabled the team to compile the best re¬ cord since 1981 and the 8th best season in the school’s history. Although this record was not an improvement over last year’s, the team held their own in important games, such as a tie against Agawam and a win over Northampton. A suffocating team defense directed by 2nd. year coach Doug Pearson, choked off any threat and had opposing coaches reaching for their Heimlich manuals. After a close opening night loss to Central, the Spartans rebounded with an impressive string of victories, including a tough stretch while Mike Lawless was down with an ankle injury. Presently the team is playoff bound. The team was led throughout by the superb play of captains Pete Maruca and Mike Lawless and backstopped by Chairman of the Boards, Evan Proulx. Kevin Kennedy and Mike Cintron, both captains tried to make the 86- 87 season productive. The blades on the ice were quick yet not quick enough. The Halloween Dance presented the debut of many young unknowns and unidentifiables. Were these people The Outcasts” or merely intermission goodies standing by the popcorn machine? Wanderers had to watch out for ghosts, shouls or other deranged fools. The screenplay provided outrageous characters. Costumes were imaginatively provided by Ghordache and ranged from a possible President Reagan to a corrupted Conehead who spent the night trying to brain people. Make-up was supplied by Wax Factor. These zany zombies and foolish friends made the script into a three-star comedy. Well before the witching hour awards were given for the best dramatic appearance, and although the Red Sox didn’t win the Series, they did steal the spotlight on the dance floor. Dorothy and Toto couldn’t come, but a German Tin Woodman, who was in the wrong studio, fared well in the judging. The musical score was by Synovia, a new addition to the dance. The lead singer, that ever-scary guy, Kevin Casey, gave new meaning to the words Twist and Shout. He reeled out great renditions of Uz and Stand By Me, a threatening proposition considering the freaky creatures who came out that night. Events 141 The highest-rated horror shows ever programmed in ELHS have been the Scholastic Aptitude Tests given this year in November and December. After years of preparation by all the test-takers, and the concentrated focus of Review English and Math classes, Vocab and Grammar, and the SAT tutored courses, it all came down to three hours of pains-taking, mind-boggling trauma. As the students gathered around the entrance to the school in the wee hours of the morning, they knew that the next three hours would ultimately decide their future. Donna Neves, Curtis Picard, Chris Rinaldi, Kristen La- Valley, Tom Rogan, and the exchange students explained their views of the past years-and were unexpectedly aided by Tony Maestrone ' s strong endorsment of an excit¬ ing future. The prom, as always, was one of the most exciting nights of the year. The fun at Chez Josef started at the round tables (but not for the shrimp and steer who were out of it) and escalated to the dance floor. The floor was crammed until midnight, but when the clock struck twelve, the party moved to Dino’s, where it’s still going on. Where The Boys Are ' 87. On this night, awards were really what it was all about. The books, the term- papers and the tests, the time-balancing to find time for study and for ever ything else. The academic achieve¬ ments of EL ' s students were finally recog¬ nized. Recipients in¬ cluded Jeff Travers They ve got beauty and brains. Where’s my award? Who’s got a tissue? No skipping on May 21,1987. ELHS students took the day off legally to participate in Field Day. Highlights of the day were a sli- mey mud fight and a dip in the pond, while the egg fight was an¬ other scrambled time. With Mr. Mazz participating more than su¬ pervising, and students pelting ev¬ eryone in sight with mud and hen fruit a great time was had by all. Wish you were there. Ferns Ceeller’s Day Off list’s Entertainment This year’s show marked the 25th anniversary of E.L.’s entertainment at its best with the Spartanum Spectacular. The school was honored with the return of numerous alumni who had participated in the show when they attended the high school. With the help of students Buffy Tarsa and Kerry Kryznowek as Direc¬ tors, Mark Trial and Tony Maestrone as Masters of Ceremonies, and Brenda Marsian as Student Director of the Band the show enjoyed a huge success. Advisors Miss Herschuk and Mr. Turner gave unsparingly of their time and energy to help with the production and merited a few grey hairs in the process. A revival of the movie Hair? Pum The Varsity Softball Team struggled through the 1987 season with numerous difficul- ties. The team consisted main¬ ly of underclassmen without experience. The three seniors, Kris LaValley, Jen Ferri, and Kristen Shank, showed ap- plaudable leadership and pa¬ tience while Coach Brownlee boosted the team ' s morale. The girls netted a 5-9 record playing diligently and many matches were lost by slim margins. One senior spotlighted on the team was Beth Myers who was an All-Western Mass, selection and made it to the semifinals in the Western Mass, tournament. Other seniors who were strong contributors to this year’s team were Joy Wiezbicki, Pauline Ferreira, and Buffy Tarsa.
