At each other’s throats and ready to explode at any opportunity, they are making the whole world uneasy. Even our geographical environs are in chaos. Floods, famine, volcanic eruptions and earth- quakes have mirrored the vast unrest of the peoples of the world. This ferment, however, isn’t felt within the halls of East Longmeadow High School because of Rob- ert Hamel, Vice-Principal. We, the class of 1986, dedicate this book to the man who keeps that delicate balance between chaos and precision. The harmony that is maintained is a direct result of his dedication to order and discipline. The Spartan gridmen, led by captains Kevin Handzel and Rich Tullie, and a score of veteran seniors, fin- ished at 8-2, second place in the Suburban League. Winning was contagious for the Spartan squad. After dropping the opener to superbowl champion. Palmer, the team, spurred by Coaches Modzelewski, Conlin and Moge, romped through eight weeks of victory. Minnechaug, Northhampton and South Hadley fell before them. Stand- ing undefeated in the League, the Spar- tans faced a Thanksgiving Day show- down with Longmeadow for a superbowl berth. Although not much went well for the red and grey that afternoon, nothing can take away from the Cinderella season that electrified E.L. fans. The team deserves much credit for the special chemistry that made the season outstanding. To be commended above all is senior Ed Leahy, who accepted his sea- son-ending injury with class, and had enough pride to be out on the field every day encouraging his team. That’s special. Another strenuous practice r he 1985 field hockey team had an excellent season. With the strong leadership of Coach Wilk and the support of co-captains Kelly Gorman (MVP) and Sue Drink- water, the Spartans ended with a final record of 8-5-1. Making it to the preliminaries of the Western Mass, tournament, the hockey team was defeated by South Hadley. Through team effort and support and great coaching. East Longmeadow dominated the game. Tina McKenney scored early to put the Spartans ahead 1-0. With 4:35 left, however, Hadley slammed an unexpected shot into EL’s goal. With the score tied at the end of the game. East Longmeadow went into two ten minute over-timesj not to score, unfortunately. As the score was still tied, both teams had five chances to score by taking penalty shots. Time ran out; Hadley won. A sad game it was, indeed, for E.L. Seniors Jill Hulton, Tina McKenney, Kelly Gorman, and Sue Drinkwater played spectacularly in this game and throughout the season. Next season looks promising as upcoming Seniors include: Kerry Kryznowek, Pauline Ferreria, Anita Reuter, and Karen Gondela. The agony of defeat Sl bports J- . - 1 - , ‘■u.f ' ' ■- -•• •■ — It ' .. Even though the season’s record was not the best, the real story is that the team lost most games by just one goal. The highlight of the season was, without a doubt, Spartans over Chicopee High, 5-2. Hours of practice suddenly paid off as the Spartans used teamwork and ruthlessness to down the formi- dable Pacers. The team also received strong support from sophomore sensations Chris Maxim and Evan Proulx who came on at the end of the year to help the Spartans head to the play- offs. The crowds’ enthusiasm was raised by the many close games that the Spartans were in. Among these games, the most memorable included the stunning upset of high- ly ranked Commerce, a heart-break- ing overtime loss to Minnechaug, and a surprising one-point victory over South Hadley.
