It Is A Representation Of A Person 14 We the class of ' 85 would like to dedicate this book to Mrs. Keating. She has helped us in numerous ways to put our future into perspective. Up until this year we didn ’t realize the extent of her duties. Whether it was preparing last minute transcripts or squeezing in urgent appoint- ments, we could always count on her. The effort and time needed to help prepare the records for over 200 students for college is not an easy task. Therefore we would like her to know that her work did not go unnoticed. For all you do, this book ’s for you. 17 Lisa Abrahamson Roger Ball Ronald Benoit Christiana Brown Jeffrey Brown Melissa Bruce Christian Bach Michael Beaudet James Brennan Cheryl Berselli Alan Anderson Nicole Bartolucci Cheryl Bolles Cheryl Arcand Pamela Bassett Deborah Askew Lawrence Bean Christine Bouchard Tammy Ahlberg Vincent Bongiovanni Steven Barlow Kathy Bryant Nancy Bryant Michael Cafaro Christine Bryson Kevin Butler Barbara Cavanaugh Carrie Concato Michael Cavanaugh Paul Connors Christopher Chapdelaine Astrid Clarke Heather Cooley Nancy Cooling Kimberly Coleman Vanessa Coulacos Lisa Calabrese Jennifer Carlson Daniel Carpenter Lori Ann Casey Anthony Commisso Deborah Croken 20 Robert Crossman John Czupryna Erin Crowe Deborah Degon Jeffrey Demarey Michelle Denno Cheryl Darney Steven Derosia Michele Davis Melissa DeBlok Jane Dilanian Michelle Derusha Rachel Dinnie Matthew Donatelli Robert Draper Jason Duffy Robert Fancy Beth Drinkwater Amy Dubner James Ford 21 Richard Garstka Edward Glista Todd Gaudet Kim Gorman Nicolle Gebo Paul Georgantas Karen Hala Andrew Gelinas Jennifer Gurney Diane Girard David Hanson Michael Hallett Robert Hartman Tammy Hebert Cheri Hicks Kristen Hillman Jeffrey Holt Paul Humphrey Corinne Kane Cathryn Kokonowski Andrea Igoe Kathleen Kennedy Brian Kowalczyk Gina Impagnatiello Donna Kowalczyk Michael Janiszewski Kimberly Knight Cheryl L aChance Adam Knight Lisa Lafratta Tracy Juzba Michael Knorr I David Laliberte 23 Mary Beth Lally Todd Lamb Melissa Laramee Michelle Lata William LaPlante Pamela Lempke Angela Libby Amy Liberatori Brian Liebel Aimee Loiselle Pamela Magrone Agustino Maida Thomas Manarite Michael Mansur Ann Marie Mann Jeffrey Lederer Adam Long Erin Lundberg Christopher Maccarini Jennifer MacDonald David Marquis 24 Lily Martin Michael Maxwell Carolyn Mayer Amy Mayotte 11 Carole Moody Andrea Mazzariello Umberto Maruca Joseph Mascaro Pamela Mattson Christopher Maxim Corky P. Perhaps it is the same as your grandmother’s - or a rich uncle’s. You may have been named for a presidential candidate or a flower. You may have the name of a season of the year or a time of day. In the 20’ s babies were named for movie stars; today you may have the same name as the star of General Hospital. You could have any name for any reason. Whatever your name is, it has probably been used before. In 1583 the most popular names for girls were Jane, Elizabeth, Margaret, Ann, and Mary. In 1 783 Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, Sarah and Margaret were the most common names for girls. In 1959 the list was headed by Jane, Mary, Ann, Elizabeth and Sarah. Jane, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ann were the leaders in 1965. The class of 1988 lists one Elizabeth and six Lisas - a form of Elizabeth. Ann is an element in six names; there is one Jane; no one is named Sarah. The most unusual name in the class belongs to a boy ■ Gennady Zak. Former Vice President Alben Barkley once seriously thought of introducing a federal bill making it mandatory to postpone the naming of children until they were old enough to be consulted. Women generally dislike the names Mabel, Myrtle and Bertha, bio sophomore has those names. Men are usually dissatisfied with Clarence, Percy and Horace, bio male sophomore is listed as having such a name. Unusual names may be eye-catching, but imagine being known forever as any of these collected from American newspapers; Fice Mook, Trammer W. Splown, Gulley Cowsert, Buckshot Magonicle, Phoebe Beebe or Teemer Furr. The most unusual name in the sophomore class is Kristy na biiemi, which has a rhythm all its own. The two longest names in the United States, according to Social Security lists, are Hubert Wolfeschlegelsteinhausbergerdorff and James J. Pappatheodorokoummoun- tourgeotopoulos. The longest listed name in the sophomore class is Joseph M. VanValkenburg. Mr. S. Hoving, a hauling and moving contractor in Chicago, and Mr. J.E. Weller, a jeweller in Idaho feel that one’s name influences one’s position in life. Most realize that whatever you do, your reputation for good or bad is your name. It is how we know you. It is you. There are pet names, variants, or nicknames for almost every name in the world. A girl named Elizabeth at her christening could be called Elisabeth, Elisheba, Elisabetta, Elsbeth, Isabel, Isabella, Isobel, Isbel, Alisa, Bess, Bessie, Bessy, Bet, Beth, Bethia, Betsy, Bettie, Betty, Bettina, Elisa, Elissa, Eliza, Elsie, Elspie, Libby, Lisa, Lise, Lesa, Lisbeth, Lisette, Liz, Lizzy, Liza, Lizzie, Tetsy, Tetty, and Tibbie or Tibby . . . and still be Elizabeth. Only five junior girls are named Elizabeth or a variant. Junior names are not without distinction. One girl is regally named Princella Eppes, and one boy enjoys the musical sounding name Peppino Aiello. The most aristocratic name, however, belongs to Charles H. Noonan IV. “Is your name on the list?” If you were living in the 800 ' s you probably wouldn ’t have a permanent last name. Your name on the roll, or list , of responsible citizens would depend on various descriptive adjectives written after and a little above (sur) your given name. There- fore you might be Kevin White, or ‘blond’ Kevin, rather than the dark-haired Kevin who lived down the street. He became Kevin Black. ‘Black’ or ‘White’ was called the surname. Your surname can reveal your father’s father’s father’s name as do Johnson or O’Brien or McTaggart. It may point to your geographical roots; Ashley means living near the grove of ash trees; Picard informs us that some ancestor once came from Picardy, France. Your name may give away your family business as do Smith, Taylor or Butler. Your name may point out some particularly apt nickname given to a long-gone relative as does the name given to an ancient basketball star, ‘Longfellow’, or ‘Smart’ who got high SAT’s, or the name of that sober sides ‘Drinkwater’. In 1964 the Social Security files showed the following names as the most common surnames in America: 1. Smith . . . 1,872,400 2. Johnson ... 1,414,100 3. Brown . . . 1,061,400 4. Williams . . . 1,058,200 5. Jones . . . 1,029,800 6. Miller 895,300 7. Davis 809,800 8. Martin 723,800 9. Anderson 619,300 10. A J? inebacker 86 Dedication Discipline I think I can, I think I can. Under new coaches Modzelewski, Conlin and Moge, the Spartan Gridmen played an exciting season. Captains Chris Brown and Dave Cannone led a hard-hitting defense while Captains John Kelley and Jay Bertrand kept the offense intact. Although finishing 3-7, the Spartans started strong with a last second win at Palmer. E.L. played extremely well the next two weeks but lost both games to AA powers Holyoke and Minnechaug. Injuries hampered the Spartans all season but a good attitude and a lot of determination carried them to victories over Chicopee and a big win against Shepherd Hill. The Thanksgiving Day game with Longmeadow was a thrilling end to the Spartan season. A fired-up Spartan team jumped out to a 13-0 lead over the Super Bowl bound Lancers behind the excellent play of seniors Brian Villeneuve and Rob Mei. The second half proved to be different as the Lancers outscored E.L. 28-13 but the seniors and the rest of the E.L. contingency had nothing to be ashamed of. Other seniors Michael Moses, Gordon Milroy, Joe Chapdelaine, and Rico Cava will be missed but with returning starters Joe Scibelli, Ed Leahy, Kevin Handzel and Steve Fishbein leading a promising group of underclassmen, the Spartans will be the team to beat in ’ 86 . After moving up a league, this years’ girls soccer team gave it their best despite the overwhelming challenge they faced. They won the first few games, but the season ended with frustrating loses. Led by tri-captains Steph Dalton, Beth Hanna, and Karen Kenney, the Spartans kept up their spirit. Seniors Sharon Janiszewski, Beth Hanna and Steph Dal- ton(MVP) made up a strong defense. The offensive players included seniors Laura Cooley and Diana Casey, and juniors Karen Kenney, Gail Roblinski, Tracy Cardinale, and Justine Carotenuti. Keeping the center strong, halfbacks included Tina Smith, Nancy Cafaro, and Becky Zumbruski. Pam Travers, who became a strong goalie for the Spartans, came to the rescue to keep the team on their feet after. sophomore Leslie Hosmer was injured. What do you mean we re losing? The Spartans were led by a very strong defense with junior sweeper back Joe Panzetti and senior goalie Guy Henrich, Seniors Greg Dobek and Mike Schaefer were outstanding and spirited defensemen. First-year coach Jim O ' Hearn turned last years’ team around from a dismal 2-14-2 to a team which with a little bit of luck could have been in the Western Mass Play-Offs. Junior Jaime White lead all Spartans in scoring registering a total of eight points. Seniors Mike Parenteau and Paul Dutille piled up points in tandem. Coach Wilk surveys the scene. 98 What’s That? Watering time. In the past the field hockey team has been fairly successful. This year that success was heightened and the team made it’s way to the Championship. How was this great feat accomplished? Through the excellent guidance and determination of Coach Wilk, captains Sara Bartley and Cheryl Heath and the total loyalty of each player. The final record (9-2-3) shows this determination. Every game was played with enthusiasm, including the final match against Southwick. Though East Longmeadow lost with a score of 2-1, they were first to score on the team which later won the Championship. Each senior will be greatly missed. Those include the captains, Robin Black, Nicki Basile, and Terri Hulton. Robin Black and junior Kelly Gorman (MVP) made the Western Mass. team. All other players will be vitally needed next season. During the season, the boys swamped Cathedral, 42-41, in a meet that went right down to the wire. Sophomore Jim White and upcoming Freshman Earl Seeley turned in strong performances to put the Spar- tans over the top. With constant improvement of his scores, Kevin Smith was a driving force behind boy’s diving. Miss Kerr can look forward to solid perfor- mances by Freshman diver Gennady Zak in years to come. While Coach Bolles will be sorry to say good bye to strong swimmers Mike Bolles and Paul Dutille, he knows he can count on returnees Mark McCormick, Mike Beaudet, Jeremy Shurtleff, and Mike Hallet to keep the Spartan tradition of winning buoyant. Jessica Smit and Nicole Gebo are new additions that add depth and diversi- ty to the team. E.L. swimmin ' women wouldn ' t have been the same without top-notch performances by seniors Leslie King, Terri Hulton, Pam Travers and Katie Farrell. Many personal records were set during the course of the season, but the highlight may have been when diver Katie Farrell eclipsed the school diving record which had stood for eight years. Cinder the leadership of Miss Kerr, divers Tina Smith and Denise Dutille also turned in out- standing performances on many occasions. As the bus drove to and from the hockey rink each day, (sometimes with inexperienced bus drivers), the road to the playoffs seemed a bit bumpy. The overpopulated, under- paid team of ELHS fought gallantly against tough competition. Our un- faithful mascot, Fearless Fuzzy, spent more time vacationing in the Bahamas than cheering on his team at the Colosseum. Nevertheless the team had a lot of spirit. The one and only twinkie-eating pear, made sure to stay clear when the initiation rallies began. He spent most of this excess time attempting to figure out what to use his birthday present for. The highlight of the season came on the road as the ever-determined team fought a suspense-filled battle which was won on a last-minute lap shot by our only oriental player, Joe Scibelli. Brian Stevens, Dan Buendo, Matt DeNucci, Chris Brown, John Donohue, Bill Gorman, Kevin Schue- len and Joe Bibeau were the ever- dominating seniors who will remem- ber and appreciate the support the hockey moms gave. 121 WRESTLING eversal tance ake down ift nterlock eutral rapple V a y K$y vy , 0 Tuesday [Sight Titans!
