This book acclaims every student who has experienced the in¬ ner need to succeed and who has gladly given time and spirit to that end. We do not salute those who win, but rather those who survive: our book is dedicated to all who have had the personal courage to go for the gold. IN MEMORY OF James Hafey 1966-1978 There are places I’ll remember all my life, though some have changed, some forever, not for better, some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments, with lovers and friends I still can recall, some are dead and some are living, in my life I’ve loved them all . . . Though I know I’ll never lose affection for people and things that went before, I know I’ll often stop and think about them in my life I’ll love you more. In my life I’ll love you more. Soccer saw a rebuilding year under the guidance of Coach Smith. With only four seniors, the team suffered from inexperience. Captain Bob Farrell was out for the year with a leg injury. Captain Jim Severin missed several games because of a myriad of injuries. This left Captain Steve Mushenko to lead his raw but able players for the greater part of the season. The ’84 practice season should prove beneficial for Coach Smith and Tri-Captains Kevin Smith, Guy Henrich and Jeff Plourde. Heading up the ' 84 squad will be Paul Dutille, Mike Schaefer, Jim Healey, Brian Burke, John Donohue, Chris Duffy, Mike Hulett, Jamie White, Joe Panzetti and Tom LeClair. Quick, stamp out the fire Get your own goodies! Playing their games in Olympic style, the girls soccer team had an outstanding season. Winning the C-division with a 6-3-6 re¬ cord, their team was led by captains Danell Trinceri and Colleen Ferri. Under the direction of Coach Palmer, the team showed great improvement from their previous disheartening year. The high point of their season was in the semi-finals of Western Mass against Nashoba Regional High School. This grueling match went into 7 overtimes with the Spartans losing in sudden death. Other game highlights included beating Westfield for the C-division Championship. Coming from behind 2-1 in the forth quarter, Tracey Cardinale scored the winning goal with 19 seconds left. Karen Kenney led the Spartan booters in goals and assists. Although it is losing six talented seniors, the team should do extremely well next year with upcoming players Steph Dalton, Diana Casey, Laura Cooley, Beth Hanna, Tracey Cardinale, Karen Kenney, and Tina Smith. TOPS IN C-DIVISION!! SAWYER AND SONS How many yards this time? Constantly improving its record this year, the E. L. Spartan football team had some glorious moments. By winning four out of the first five games, the team was in contention for first place and an honorable ranking. In beating two AA teams, the Spartans showed their com¬ petitiveness and unity as a playing force. Under the lead¬ ership of the four captains the team battled the best and played with the desire and determination that only win¬ ners have. In the upcoming year many talented Juniors such as Dave Cannone, Chris Brown, John Kelley, Jay Bertrand and many others will lead the warriors. We gratefully acknowledge the leadership and dedication of the Coach and the departing Seniors; Tom Krol, Ron Gallerani, Tom Leahy, Jim Walsh, Mike Stevens, Jim Dris¬ coll and the rest of the ’83 Spartan football team. Led by a first-year coach, Miss Wilk, the Field Hockey team had different experiences this year — some good, some disappointing. With good team effort, they chalked up a record of 4 - 5 - 5; a truly gold medal effort. Seniors and captains Theresa Florence, Sue Gemme and Donna Dickson were strong leaders all season and led the team with confidence and expertise. Their per¬ sistant efforts with the team and Miss Wilk’s steady training should pay off next year for returning Juniors, Robin Black, Sara Bartley, Nicki Basile, Cheryl Heath and the famous goalie, Debbie Whitehead. 59 CROSS COUNTRY Okay you guys ... we got to hit them hard . .. hit’em high .. . hit’em low . . . please! AT EASE, EYES FRONT Under the coaching of Mr. Calabrese and Rick Hun- dertmark, this years harriers finished out the season with a 4-7 record. MVP Pat Brown proved to be an asset to the team by breaking the ribbon and taking first place in five meets, with Clint Maxim and Paul Fontaine following close behind. With the addition of many freshmen this year, the team grew in number and in strength- and with those, came enthusiasm. Thanks to Rick and his speed wor¬ kouts and 10-mile runs, the team showed great im¬ provement by defeating Ware, Ludlow, Tech, and South Hadley. Kelly Luce and Paul Fontaine were voted next year’s c plains. Seniors Pat Brown, Clint Maxim, and Bonnie v-ett will be greatly missed next year. E.L. really stretches! E. L. TUMBLE ALONG getting a firm grip on life Led by first year coach Joy Wolcott, the Spartan gymnasts had a respectable performance finishing with a 5-6 season. The gymnasts set many personal records, including a new team total of 108.75 points .. Captains Heidi Huntley and Katie Farrell kept the team in high spirits, while junior Ashley Lindwall excelled in the floor exer¬ cise. There were three outstanding team members who qualified for Western-Mass., Kristen Slate, Katie Farrell, who made All Western- Mass, and Lynn DeNucci, who took second in Western-Mass all around and also made All-Western Mass. Losing only one senior through graduation, the team should do very well next year. and away we go. 65 E. L. ICE FISHERMEN TAKE ON Top; Steve Freeze” Hawkins, Center, L to R. S. winter sports program was a complete success. Under the direction of Coach Lynch, the team slid into a Western Mass. Championship (out of one team). The indomitable captains consisted of Seniors Bonnie Lovatt, Bob Farrell, and Bob Earnshaw. The season was character¬ ized by the only catch of the year, Jaws Jr., caught by Mr. Penguin, the Mascot! Vanquished Mascot munches catch-of-of-the-day Our fearless fishermen Leaving the scene of the crime You! . . . Your’re a bad apple! G-O-N-Z-O! 7in rnnnprtl Pole Position The Spartan Puckmen, led by captains Steve Mu- shenko and Ralph Romito, took on the difficult task of turning around last years record. With a respectable start of 5-2, the team fought for key wins against Greenfield, Ludlow, Chicopee, and of course rival Minn. Falcons. The first line, consisting of Joe Saracino, Geno Ranaldi, and Steve Mushenko, and second line Joe Sci- belli, Brian Fazio, and Phil Marafioti, skated hard to gain the necessary goals to win. The stand-up defence- men, Dan Buendo, John Donahue, Brian Stevens, Bri¬ an Burke, Darren Barnes, Darren Krzynowek, and Joe Bibeau proved to be worthy of the Spartan name. First rate goalie Ralph Romito set a spectacular example for upcoming Chris Brown and Duane Adams. Strong new¬ comers on the spartan lines will be Paul Cuoco, Tom Leclair, and Bill Gorman. Senior sensations Jim “scul- man” Scully and Joe Pagnoni, together with the star line-up, certainly have shown that nobody defeats E.L. without a good fight! A special note should be added to the bad apples that led the Spartan squad. Thank you- coach Brownley and Coach Callahan. Standing L to R: Coach Keith Brownlee, Capt. FREE THROWING SPARTANS And that’s the way it is Although this year’s girl’s Varsity members have been young, many individual goals have been reached. Cheryl Bas¬ sett and Colleen Ferri have made the top 10 scoring column for a good majority of the season. The competition in the B division this year was very strong, but the Spartans managed to pull off a few upsets. Coach Czajkowski, was injured mid-way through the season and was not able to return. Despite her not being there physically, her heart was still with the team. This inspired the team to play with great intensity against some tough teams such as Agawam, West Springfield, and Cathe¬ dral. Amy Marchachacos, the JV Coach guided the team after Ms. Czajkowski’s absence. The team should really think of this year as a building year both in maturity and team skills. The squad will return with top contenders Karen Kenney, Becky Zumbruski, Laurel Redington and Jill Lundberg in ' 85. Butter fingers! 73 Cheryl’s toe-stopping shot! Fingertip reach! 76 Ray’s boys started off with their heads in the clouds this season, but soon enough planted their soles back on the courts. With Sean Forrest as top basketeer, the Spartans mapped out their course for victory with such greats as Seniors Songini and Tidlund waiting to strike. Senior Kennedy and Junior Redington softened the rough edges. E.L. Basketball lead the Pioneer Valley this year by winning 7 games in a row so far this season. With such a perfect line¬ up, how could the team be anything but awesome?! It’s a bird, it ' s a plane, it ' s Super Songe! Speaks for itself!! Look mom, no feet! The East Longmeadow High School Wrestling Team completed its best season in ten years by posting a perfect 9 - 0 record thereby winning the Division II West League Championship. The team’s overall record was 9-3, including a 54 - 9 victory over cross-town rival, Longmea¬ dow. The three losses came from top division I teams and were excellent meets. Over forty boys came out for the team and thirty-one stuck it out for the season. The Spartan JV’s ended the year with a perfect slate, 8 - 0. OKOKDw 114 DR. WAYNE S. PORTER As the 1983-1984 school year drew to a close, we witnessed the retirement of Dr. Wayne S. Porter. He has instituted new and innovative reforms that have in¬ creased the performance of the education system. He oversaw the construction of two additional elementary schools, and directed the building of a science wing, an industrial arts complex and a new gym to expand the high school. Although we were not always aware of his pre¬ sence as we went from class to class, we surely knew he was the voice behind our random snow days. On behalf of the entire school system- we salute you- Dr. Porter. PRINCIPLE ADMINISTRATORS Mr. Cannone, Principal Mr. Cokkinias, Assistant Principal Mr. Hamel, Assistant Principal Head Coach Mr. Connone and Assistant Coaches Mr. Cokkinias and Mr. Hamel have led the students with a firm hand. Always there to show us the way, these men are the backbone of our team. They direct all student sessions, discipline infractions, test the stamina of the students and try the mettle of their souls. And when the time for cheering comes, they’re first to rise to their feet and to shake a student’s hand. 116 GOLD MEDAL GUIDANCE COUNSELORS Mrs. Maselli Mr. Camp Guiding us to our goals, the East Longmeadow High School counselors did a fine job. Mastering the new computer system turned out to be but a small hurdle for them to overcome. Helping the students to choose courses as well as colleges, they proved themselves as the best. College ZYCH, TANYA 525-4049 Travel 29 Hampden Rd. neck 9 Desiderata Go placidly among the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and agressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical above love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams , it is still a beautiful world. Be cqareful. Strive to be happy. S. this past year. Not only has he added a French accent and flashed that Caunuck smile, but Ben’s also par¬ ticipated in many school sports. He’s added his athletic deftness to such activities as soccer, hockey, and baseball. Outside school, Ben has made many friends through the organization, the American Field Service, which sponsored his trip. Life in the United States, accord¬ ing to Ben, is not too unlike life in Canada. Although some American customs are puzzling, he has plunged into academic and social life in East Longmeadow enjoying both as we enjoy him. Ahhhh, give ’em a hug! 165 LET’S GO E.L.! 166 Top row l-r- Angela Federici, Beth Harrington, Michelle Fontana, Laura Impoco, Kristen Moberg, Karen Moberg. Bottom row l-r- Kim Ball, Kim Carlson(capt.), Mary Beth Murphy(capt ), Patti Tarsa. Leaping into the air to incredible heights, building indestruc- table pyramids, yelling those catchy cheers to the roaring fans are the E.L.H.S. cheerleaders. Throughout the season, during rain, sleet and snow the girls kept the boys ' spirits high. While Marybeth Murphy and Kim Carlson led the squad with vigor and determination, Ellen Race as head-honcho kept things under a tight control. Behind every successful man, there’s a woman — our boys are lucky - they’ve nine nimble ones to insure success. Almost everyone’s got the beat. 167 mm SPORTS BOY’S SOCCER EL OPP. 0 Classical 2 1 Chicopee 3 1 Agawam 3 4 Northampton 4 Win Cathedral Forfeit 3 Holyoke 5 1 Putnam 0 0 Minnechaug 5 0 West Springfield 4 1 Longmeadow 2 1 Amherst 3 0 Ludlow 5 0 Westfield 8 3 Technical T 1 Chicopee Comp 1 16 TOTAL 46 FOOTBALL CROSS COUNTRY EL OPP.
