Who’s the one eating the oily apples? Who’s the jogger and basketball player we see running after school or on weekends? Who’s the guy that loves to check the backs of doors looking for the Tex- ans? Although he graduated long ago, Mr. Cokkinias is still very much a member of each graduating class from East Longmeadow High School. This is especially true for the class of ' 83. He has be- come a true friend of the class while maintaining a firm authoritarian control over it. With his help, he has encouraged many of our classmates in various ways. He has watched us slide once or twice, and pointed out our errors, still we appreci- ate his style; he is very much a teen-ager at heart, for he understands what growing up is all about. For these reasons, the class of ' 83 dedicates this year ' s Aegis to Mr. James Cokkinias. We ap- preciate his help and enjoy his friendship. WHERE THE SHOE FITS Paws off Bub!! Hey man, stop treading on my thoughts. I just can’t tell if it ' s “man or “beast The hypnotic typist If the shoe fits . . . wear it. In room 204, that is easier said than done. For in this famous yearbook homeroom, there are found a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes. There was Brad, who wore out more shoes than any- one, Rosanna, who pirouetted in her soft leathers, Cathy in her sloppy sneakers, Pete in his rugby shoes, Beth, who had happy feet, Ellen, whose feet everyone loved, Nee-Nee, who wore the tightest shoes, John, who photographed everyone ' s shoes, and Patti, who used h er fingers instead of her feet. Leading this band of merry cobblers was Curly, Dew, Spike, and Tiny Tim. The underclassmen hush puppies aided in tieing the final string. I ' m gonna make tracks soon! Remember Brian Boduch ' 65-’79 Scott Robinson ’65-’79 Why then, why there, Why thus, we cry , did he die? The heavens are silent. What he was , he was: What he is fated to become Depends on us. Returning only a single starter and few varsity members the team lacked experience, among other prob- lems that erupted! Playing and fighting hard behind captains Mark Dutille and Mike LeClair the team went on to beat Classical, Chicopee, Holyoke, Putnam, Tech, and Chicopee Comp. Finishing with a record of 6-7-2, the season highlight was a tie against Ludlow, in which Ludlow tied the game with 33 seconds left in the game. The scoring was done by the front line consisting of Dave Neves, Bill Bourgeoise, Bruce Goodwin, Steve Gemme, Bob Villeneuve. Juniors Steve Mushenko, and sophomore Jeff Plourde. The backbone and midfield for the team included MVP Mark Dutille, Sergio Settembre, Scott and Mike Rogers, and sophomore Kevin Smith. The defense was often stalwart with Jim Severin, Bob Farrell, and Steve Mushenko under the guiding foot of Coach Smith. The driving force Front (I. to r.): Mike Rogers. Despite the fact that the Girl’s Soc- cer Team had an upsetting season, they still had that good old Spartan Spirit. The crew went up against tough competitors: such as, Agawam, Cathe- dral, and Classical, but could not de- feat them. They battled, but were too inconsistent to keep the final score in their favor. Coach Bernatowicz tried to improve the team’s skills by switching player ' s positions and recruiting fresh- men from the J.V. squad. Many juniors look promising for next year. They are: Danell Trinceri, Colleen Ferri, Cheryl Bassett, Nicole Tavernier, and Carolyn Murray. Isn ' t that ref cute !! The harriers crossed the finish line this year with a 3-8 record. Newcomers, Clint Maxim and Paul Fontaine proved to be strong assets as they were our two top runners. With only eight run- ners returning from last year, most of the team was characterized by new talent. Ron Garber, John Turnberg, Mike Kennedy, and Steve Hawkins look promising along with veterans Pat Brown, Andy Jerusik and Alex Ikonomidis. The girls team, led by Bonnie Lovatt, Martha Hanna, and Lisa Leonard followed close be- hind as they rapidly im- proved t heir times. Kelly Luce was out most of the season due to a knee injury, but she, along with Kelly Ca- vanaugh should do well next year. The team defeated Lud- low, Ware, and South Hadley with remarkable finishes against Belchertown and Tech, losing by only a few points. Paul Fontaine and Bonnie Lovatt were voted next years captains and MVP Clint Maxim will be returning with great speed. 63 ,s Front (I. to r.): Clint Maxum, Andy Jerusik, Ellen Oakes, Bonnie Lovatt, Martha Hanna, Lisa Leonard, Kelly Cavanaugh, Marcia deBlock, Ron Garber, Back (I to r ): Coach Calabrese, Steve Hawkins, Ken Nuzzolilli, John Turnberg, Mike Kennedy, Jeff Manheim, Dan Warner, Mark Andrews, Bruce Stebbins, Paul Fontaine, Alex Ikonomidis, Pat Brown. Missing: Kelly Luce. 64 65 GIRLS’ FIELD HOCKEY Struggling through a tough sea- son, E.L. Field Hockey finished its year with a 4-7-1 record. With the loss of many seniors, and the addi- tion of several freshmen, the squad had little experience. Co-captains Beth Gelinas and Terry Florence kept the girls in high Spartan spirit throughout the season. MVP Sue Ni- chols defended the Spartan goal with a lot of flair, while on offense, Danielle “Cheeks” Gour dribbled and dodged down the field where Robin Black and Beth Gelinos would be ready to drive the ball into the goal. With a powerful young defense, comprised of Terry Florence, Cheryl Heath, Kelly Gorman, and Terri Hul- ton, the scoring opportunities of op- posing teams were often crushed. 66 LACES ’EM UP Front (I. to r.): Josh, Nikki Basile, Beth Harrington, Kelly Gorman, Beth Gelinas, Terry Florence, Sara Bartley, Cheryl Heath, Jill Hulton. The 1982 Gymnastics team flipped into a 5-6 record. With Laura DeNucci and Jill Bodnar as captains, the team excelled in the floor exer- cises, on the uneven bars, and on the balance beam. Sophomore, Kate Farrell and Lynn DeNucci, freshman, led the team with high scores of 30.00 and 32.00. With just four seniors leaving the team this year, Coach Vangsness has high hopes for next years tumblers. Front (I. to r.): Heidi Huntley, Ashley Lindwall, Lynn DeNucci, Laura DeNucci, Jill Bodnar, Kristen Slate, Lori Hockstra, Kate Farrell. RETREAD THEIR CLEATS A rejuvinated Spartan football team began the season in late Au- gust under new head coach Tom Sawyer. Coach Sawyer a ’67 E. L. product is familiar with Spartan Tac- tics and brings a winning back- ground from his previous position to E. L. football. The Spartans started off their season by upsetting two double AA teams Chicopee and Ca- thedral. Under captains Wyatt Hurt, Jim Killoran and Ed Moses they bat- tled the best. At one point during the season the Spartans were 4-1 and in first place in the suburban league. A few injuries and a few bad breaks hurt them as they ended up the sea- son 4-6. The season ended on a strong note as the Spartans battled Longmeadow dominating the game only to lose by a touchdown in a heartbreaker. Some key wins were over Greenfield and Amherst. Junior Q. B. Tom Leahy led a strong run- ning game with seniors Steve Quag- liato, Wyatt Hurt and Ed Moses avoiding tacklers. Seniors Jim Creighton, Sean Seely, Pete Can- none, Brian Sullivan, Greg Gebo and Dave Noreen all turned in strong seasons. With teams like 1977 Championship team to look back upon and many underclassmen re- turning the best is yet to come. Brian Sullivan clears the way 73 MIGHTY SPARTAN WARRIORS Departing Seniors: (I to r) front row; Capt. Jim Killoren, Capt. A. Wyatt Hurt, Capt. This year’s Spartans were led by tri-captains Bruce Goodwin, Sean “Neck” Seely and Mike Songini while under the direct supervision of three year veteran coach “Raymond Arra. The start- ing team consisted of the tri-captains along with returning seniors Jeff Manheim, Mike Forrest and “Sophomore Stimulation” Sean Forrest. The boys riding Pine next to coach Arra and assistant coach Knowe were Scott Tidlund, Michael Kennedy, Fred Frangie, and Chuck Reddington. These underclassmen hold EL’s basketball future in their hands. So much for apple pie and the American way. Seriously though, there is a time and place for everything but this isn’t it!!!! P 1 Despite the girls’ Basketball Team re- cord, 7 - 7 (with four games left to play in our season) this year was still a success. Coach Czajkowski tapped the hidden tal- ent in the girls’ soles and the result was an explosion of enthusi- asm and even one spectacular, last-sec- ond effort, 17 foot game-saver. Tourna- ment-bound after de- feating many top teams, senior center Diane Johnson will guide her team with her height and strength. Foreward Cheryl Bassett inspired the team with her con- sistent shooting, aver- aging between 10 and 12 points a game-with a high of 27 in one game. The valuable style of performance by Linda Williams un- derneath the boards proved to be definite plus all the time. Start- ing guards Paula Caro- tenuti and Colleen Ferri showed their effective- ness on the courts, boosting the team’s unity. Paula takes it down the court. The impressive freshmen Brian Fazio and Joe Scibelli cut awesome patterns on the rinks, while strong upper-class action was provided by Steve Mushenko, Gary Miller, Gary Fontaine, Joe Saracino and the Stearns Mashing Line consist- ing of Tom Leahy, Jim Scully and Ron Boutin. With the tough defensive moves of sophomores Dan Buendo and John Donahue and the super cage work of Goalie Ralph Romito, East Longmeadow allowed few foreign pucks in the net. Chris Brown showed definite promise in spelling Romito’s goalie chores. The improvement and increased skill of Brian Stevens, Phil Marafioti and Darren Krzynowek provide a hope- ful forecast of next year’s season. Special note must be made of the hard work and strong discipline of Coach Brownlee and assistant Mr. Donovan, who have maintained high spirits despite cold feet. 84 Top (I to r): Coaches: Mr. Brownlee, Mr. Donovan, Darren Krzynowek, (capt.), Bob O ' Melia, (capt.), Dave Noreen, Tom Leahy, Gary Fontaine, Ron Boutin, Nick Cintron, Steve Mushenko, Dan Buendo, Bill Gorman, Chris Brown, (mgr.), Brett MacGowan, Bottom (I to r): Phil Marafioti, Brian Fazio, John Donohue, Joe Scibelli, Matt Denucci, Ralph Romito, Mike Tetreault, Jim Scully, Brian Stevens, Joe Saracino. Climbing to the top of their division, the perennial winners, established themselves as the true power in the winter sports season by finishing with a 16-2 record. Hard work was the source of their success, as they proved to driving Coaches Mazzariello and Lewia that they truely were not “dawging- it!” Victories over Quabbin Regional and Lud- low before spirited home crowds highlighted the team’s success. With Jim Creighton pre- siding, the group trod through many activities in order to make the year successful. They orga- nized such activities as the Sadie Hawkins Dance and the Fall Carnival. HOMEROOM REPS The homeroom Reps, put their best feet forward to ward off the pressure of the infamous Reagonomics. This unique group, selected by the class of ’83, used their special talents to raise money, through Balloon Sale, Powder Puff Derby, and the sale of candy canes. The Homeroom Reps, were ready to ward off the crushing blow of senior dues any-way possible. Homeroom Reps vended mugs, tee-shirts, flowers and candy. The persons who make the deepest rack on this team are the Senior Advi- sors, Mrs. Wilk and Mr. Cooley. Special and heartfelt thanks to them. MR. You’re staying home Friday night?!” Under the direction of Mr. “George” Burns, and with the coercion of the infamous NVRA, this dedicated group of young business men and women are seen ringing doorbells for local patrons and star patrons. In a constant search for funds to support the extravagencies of the Yearbook, room 212 excells in establishing credibility. The 212 crew also gathers odd change selling candy throughout the year, and filling nooks and crannies of students and corridors with colorful M M’s. Only the cobbler knows for sure the pounds of shoe leather they’ve worn thin all for Aegis’83. PINK PAWS OF DRAMA Stepping out on a Saturday night, a crew of over fifty actors, actresses, stagehands, lighting crew, and make up artists plotted the path for the Pink Panther to strike again. The schemes to anihilate Inspector Clou- seau (Bruce Stebbins) were mapped out by “Mr. Big’’ Calabrese and his henchwomen Susan Starkie and Lisa Federici (student di- rectors) and Susan Nichols (student produc- er). The comedy was kept alive as everyone from deadly asasins to famished pretzel eat- ers expired. The critic circle rates this year’s play with four Pink Panther paw prints. .V . The Math Team tieing together problem after problem have laced up big shoes in their never ending search for the “best” Calculus problem. Falling a few sizes short of Einstein, Newton and Franklin, the math team is still a nose and a light year ahead of us. Under the competent and logical brain power of Lt. Burns the team has solved mul- tiple equations, but I still have one problem to solve. Why are they so smart? 138 THE BAND PLAYS A TUNEFUL MELODY ■ I Dan the man, blows his stack. The impressive ELHS band has ended another year with an ear for music. J.T. has, helped them with their musical prob- lems and now almost all can read music. Not only has he transcribed, transposed and otherwise adapted all the classics in to every possible key and tempo, but he has kept a constant revolving guard on their repertoire. CHENEY’S CHIRPPERS There is no longer a need for earplugs when going by room C-3. On pitch this year were Sue Star- kie, Jennifer Dowd, Kathy Rook, Sara Bartley, Lori Fimognari, Ron Shurtleff, John Dunlop, and Chris Kaiser, all of whom participated in the Western Mass. District Con- cert at UMASS. Three-fourths of these star vocalists were recom- mended for All-State tryouts. Highlights of the rest of the year included a successful Winter Con- cert and Pops Concert. Congratu- lations are in order for all the per- formers, and, of course, Mr. Cheney, who kept the perfect rhythm. HERSCHUK’S HUT What is the only franchise that advertises in the “Daily Bulletin”, slashes prices to ac- comodate students, and annually provides a copious supply of book covers? Without hesitation, the model student, having read his handbook, will respond, “The East Long- meadow High School Student Store, what else?” Featuring a complete assortment of pens, books, and the prized number two pencils, the Student Store is the answer to every student’s prayer. “Buy one, get one free at the Student Store!” 140 SIGMA SIGMA CHI Struggling to start off on a new foot, Sigma Sigma Chi reestablished itself under the guidance of Mr. Camp. Addi- tional members were selected because of their interest in the school and community as well as their enthusiasm to get this fairly new club off the ground. SSC’s are involved in such ac- tivities as the Sportsfest, graduation, the college fair, bloodmobile, field day, helping new students who enter the school and updating the mes- sage board. THE DEBATE TEAM Resolved: That the United States should significantly curtail short arms (and legs) sales to the town of Wales. Enough small talk. Under the leadership of Mr. McKinney and Mr. Carey, East Long- meadow fared very well this season, landing one team in first place, and the other squad in fourth.
