Dedication is synonymous with Mr. Joseph Cala- breese. His bounding enthusiasm shakes the walls of room 130, carried him down cross-country trails and directs his every action as he guides East Longmeadow players in annual Drama Club productions. His work at our high school has touched many people on different levels. To seniors his role is invaluable. The composition skills needed in college classes and for later careers are perfected in his expository writing course. Students needing extra help or a college essay corrected find him more than willing to assist them. Future seniors who encounter Mr. Calabrese in Ad- vanced English II may boast of completing and passing a course noted as one of the most difficult and rewarding in the school. To the student interested in drama as a potential career, Mr. Calabrese is a spirited entrepreneur who draws from each actor the best he or she has to give. Among his credits are listed such productions as George Washington Slept Hereâ, A Connecticut Yan- kee in King Arthurâs Courtâ, and A Perfect Idiotâ. This year Mr. Calabrese has entered the athletic field, pacing his harriers on their cross-country trails. In small retribution for his expansive devotion to our concerns, the class of â82 would like to dedicate their yearbook to Mr. Joseph Calabrese. )7 NVRA Producers: Lauri Dobias Doug Hembdt Therese Quinn Jay Seyler Paul Tarsa Starring; John Carney Cover Artist Sue Nichols Title Page Divider Artist Matt Ferri Fine Payer Janet Fontana Typist Tom Hanna Doughnut Runner Bill Crawford Co-Doughnut Runner Beth Neves Poster Hanger Mike Scanlon DJ. In newly acquired Division I competition, the almighty force composed exclusively of seniors defied all odds and exceeded expectations by obtaining a third seed for Western Mass, competition. Spartan Fever, however, was in full bloom as our team, backed by ecstatic fans, headed to the field, not to play, but to win. In the first round, the soccer men christened Spartan territory with an over- whelming victory (5-2) over Classical. With the fuse lit, the mean, mean Spartan machine headed to West Springfield grounds to meet and defeat the Terriers (2-1). The contest was as exciting as any sports event was, or ever will be. Finally, in the first of two overtime periods, senior striker, Doug Wilk capitalized on a penalty shot to promote East Longmeadow High School to the Western Mass finals. Shock- ing fans and newspapermen alike, by these two underdog triumphs, the impas- sioned team defeated Ludlow (3-2) to become the Best in the West. The closely knit defense commanded by Tom (Ed) Hanna consisted of Mike Kozec, of Kozec ' s Better-Used Sports Equipment, Spaceman Mike Quagliato, and NX ildman Tom OâBrien tending net. Midfielders Paul Tarsa, Junior Mark Dutille, and the team weightâ lifter, Mike (Eagle) Scanlon were exceptional in controlling the tempo of each game throughout the season. The key to success, however, lay within the strong, aggressive front line composed of league-leading scorer Doug Wilk, Bruce Moyers, Al (Hondo) Hedin, Clean-shaven Darren (Hugo) Goguen, and steady Paul Sullivan. First year coach, Dave Smith, has high hopes for next year in juniors Mark Dutille, Mike LeClair, Bruce Goodwin, Mike Tarsa, Sergio Settembre, and Scott Rogers. i O.B. frustrates them again. 31 WESTERN MASS. This year the squad was placed in the first division where they met the stiffest competition in years. The junior varsity team, led by Coach Cooley, showed improvement as well as scoring ability. The arrival of Coach Joe Calabrese led the Spartans in the right direc- tion, as the team continuously com- piled its winnings to form a record considerably better than last yearâs. Captain Bill Crawford and Junior Bill Bartley added a great deal to the teamâs enthusiasm and overall suc- cess. Tremendous defeats included Ludlow, Ware and South Hadley along with close finishes over Belchertown and Monson. The vaulting gymnasts exceeded to levels of near perfection. Coach Vangsness re- turned this fall, and guided the gym- nasts with skill and experience to ma- ture their technique and style. Team captains: Jill Bodnar, and Laura Den- ucci led the team with their grace and determination towards the first division title. Upcoming freshmen, Kate Farrell and Ashley Lindwall are promising hopefulls for future years, along with other returning freshmen, and sophomores. Since there was only one senior on the team, Debbie Mat- thews, the team should be returning to another strong and unbeatable sea- son. This yearâs football team suffered through a 1-7-1 sea- son. For a football team to win, they have to make their own breaks. The squad this year had trouble making the big-playâ. Though plagued by injuries, the team stayed together through tough situations. This yearâs team faced one of the toughest schedules in the Suburban League. The season was opened by the competitive independent games with three AA powerhouses. Led by senior co-captains Gary Lombardo and Tom VanValkenburg, the Spartans opened their season with a loss to defending Western Mass champions, Westfield, 42-14. The Spartans then lost to West Springfield 29-13. The gridmen tied Chicopee 14-14 in an exciting game. E.L.âs next opponent was Amherst and they lost 22-20, missing a field goal in the closing seconds. After losing to South Hadley, the Spartans faced unbeaten Greenfield. The Spartans played superbly, taking the Green Wave into overtime only to lose 28-21. E.L.âs only win was a 16-8 victory over Tech. The team played their first annual Thanksgiving game this year. They battled Longmeadow with an upset in mind only to lose in an exciting game. Ed Moses and Gary Lombardo led a strong running attack. Both players were injured in the course of the season and Junior Wyatt Hurt and Sophomore Ken Morri- sino filled in gallantly. The E.L. offense was paced by tackles Jim Killoren and Greg McCollum, guards Tom Van- Valkenburg and Brian Sullivan along with center Jeff Go- dek. Mike Yacavone, Chris Magee, Sean Seely and Scott Cushman provided sure honored catches. Peter Cannone and Tom L eahy split the quarterbacking chores. Defen- sively Wyatt Hurt and Steve Quagliato played well behind a solid defensive line. The team looks forward to next year, where they have a large nucleus of returning starters. Then, with hard work and a little bit of luck, who knows-they could turn it all around! Front row (L to R): Tom Krol, Tom Leahy, Jim Mineo. 2nd row: Mike Marino. Coach Robert Dobias at the end of 13 years leaves behind a legacy of records, championships, and victories as head coach of the varsity football team. Taking the reins in 1969, Coach Dobias transformed the Spartan gridsmen into suburban league cham- pions in just two short years. This was followed by five more consecu- tive Suburban League crowns including two Superbowl victories in three trips. Among the many records established by the teams under his leadership are: the longest winning streak (26 games), most points by a team in a single game (70), and an undefeated season in 1972-73. Saturday afternoons just wonât be the same without that red-jacket- ed figure pacing the sidelines shouting instructions and encourage- ment â and finally smiling in victory. The cast consisted of captains Eleanor Blance, Lauri Dobias and Alaina Lynardâ Miller, Seniors Kris Gour, Julie McGuill and Julie Paris. Up and away goes the conehead. Who put the Super Glue on the starting blocks? BUT DONâT GO NEAR THE WATER. The girlsâ swim team had a rebuilding season this year. With only II girls on the team, the win loss record wasnât that impressive, but individually, everyone improved their times.. New coaches Sean Crowley and Helen Quigley in- spired the girls with their harmonica and nutrition scans. Co-captains were Linda Federici and Kathy Wiezbicki. Kathy did , getting in the Western Mass. Championships. , , did extremely well plac- ing . Nadine Gelinas executed her dives superbly, placing in the Champion- ships. Jennifer Dowd, Jeannine Hayes and Alicia Hundertmark have much po- tential as long-distance freestylers. Next yearâs hopefuls include Gay Nossal, Diana Casey and Kim Feathler. Front row, L. to R.; Alicia Ftundertmark, Linda Federici, Nadine Gelinas, Kathy Wiez- bicki, Susan Pond. 2nd row: L. to R.: Diana Casey, Terri Flulton, Jessica Miller. 3rd row, L. to R.: Miss Quigley, Karen Pond, Kristen Lundberg, Pam Card, Jennifer Dowd, Mary Blance, Kim Feathler, Jeannine Ftayes. 66 BOYS ' SWIMMING Swing âem up! 68 Try Harder, Iâm not off the ground yet. Led through a rebuilding season by the divers, the swim team finished with a fair record. Captains Ed Ford, Ray LaPlante, and Bill Shaw swam be- hind other swimmers such as Dan Warner, backstroke, Leekâ LeClair, breastroke and backstroke, Mark Andrews, star freestyler, Jim Creighton, distance, and Clint Max- im, butterfly. The team looks good for the future with promising fresh- men; Mike Bolles, Tony Briotta, Paul Dutille, Bob Houser, and diver Kevin Smith. Swimming along with the girls has produced many interesting situa- tions and bus rides!! But the divers have overcome the distraction of the girls, and tucked, twisted, picked and somersaulted their way through another fantastic schedule following last year ' s one, two, three, finish in Western Mass. This year the divers qualified 4 people for W. Mass. Freshmen Kevin Smith, is gain- ing experience behind the top three divers Doug Wilk, Mark Dutille, and Dave Cordone. Wilk and Dutille have both had scores over 200-state mate- rial points. Unfortunately there was no state meet for these boys to prove themselves in. The team looks forward to next year with the strong point still diving. 69 n B4 U J iBi ' f nB ⢠' âââ â â ' â â âiiÂŽ 220nniiii Robert Raymond William Arthur Benns Black Borden Bourgeoise Ronald Boutin Patrick Brown James Michael Robert Pamela Burke Carabetta Carabetta Card Christine Carlson Maria Czupryna Donna Debra Dickson Dollar Timothy Dougherty Jennifer Dowd James Driscoll Dineen Durham Kurt Duvall Robert Earnshaw Robert Farrell Michelle Douville Lorianne Fiore Scott Forbes Bethann Fitzgerald Frederic Frangie Theresa Florence k I Viki Frey Teresa Florentine Linda Fontaine Michael Gardner Jill Fopiano Lawrence Garvey Doreen Forbes Michelle Gay Deborah Gelineau Susan Gemme Joseph Wade Gerow Giorgini Nicholas Guiggio Christopher Godek Scott Gondela Mary Hafey William Handzel Martha Hanna Jeannine Hayes Michael John Sharon Hendricks Henry Hibsher Kristin Houser Roshell Huddleston Kelly Hughes Robert Hosmer Richard Houghton Morgan House Alicia Hundertmark Julia Hunt Michael Hunter Heidi Huntley ( Stephanie lorio Andrew Jerusik V Andrea Kane Aileen Donald Jason John Cara Litke Litke Loder Lolos Lombardo Laura Longo Barbara Loomis Bonnie Lovatt David Mackin Todd MacMillan Karen MacNeil 75 Linda Mallett Michael Marino Elizabeth Marsian Clinton Maxim Maureen McCormack Margaret McGreal Timothy Medrek Paul Lisa Catherine Elizabeth Mercieri Merrill Messier Messier John Meyrick Jessica Miller Tracey Minahan James Mineo Bruce Mitton Jeffrey Moore Craig Morel Robert OâMelia Joseph Pagnoni Maria Papandricopolus Kenneth Nuzzolilli Robert Pelletier Susan Odato Joyce Perry Valerie Perry Karen Sharon Angela Pond Pooler Pope Stephen Pugliano James John Barbara Christine Kenneth Ralph Tracy Quinn Quinn Raimer Relihan Richard Rinaldi Roberts Marc Robinson Catherine Rogers Ralph Romito Marlene Safford David Robert Salvatore Samson 78 Iâll wait until Iâm alone before I try it. The responsible stu- dents guided the cast through rehearsals all the way to cur- tain call with enthusiasm and dedication. They utilized their business skills to pro- mote sales of balloons and candy canes. Senior represen- tatives especially, employed a great deal of persistence and organization to collect ticket moneyâ from the entire cast. The Reps eagerness to put on the best performance possible was evident during X-Blocks, when they congregated to discuss their production plans. Rewarded with tee shirts and mugs, the class of 1982 closed the curtain after a top-notch performance. 87 WE GOT THE MONEY, HONEY!!! Gimme $5.00 on Black Beauty in the Daily Double. THE MEN AND WOMEN OF BIRDLAND Deuling Bassesâ Inexplicably the ELHS band has completed another year of providing the school with boisterous renditions of some all-time classic music. The year started off with the awesome marching unit taking the field. This bizarre group marched to such popular tunes as Morning Dance and Sgt. Pepperâs Lonely Hearts Club Band. The rest of the year is occupied bv playing in the effervescent concert band. This menagerie includes such momentus players as Doug Hembdt, Cliff Kites. Jeff Mannheim, Betsy Miller, Sue Tesoro, and Jeff Smith all of whom have been honored this year by being included in the annual District Band performance. The highlight of the year for band members is their highly prized Jazz Band. This band has won the Berklee Jazz Competition for an unpresi- dented third year in a row. Some of the euphoric musicians in this group are Greg Crawford. Bill Shaw. Tony Caliento, Cliff Kites. Doug Hembdt and Sue Tesoro. These groups always receive thunderous applause at the close of their performances. Fortunately, sellout crowds are always present to encour- age our wonderfully talented musicians to continue on their trip to stardom. The momentus ELHS Jazz Band CHORUS THE SPARTAN STORE Who are the most necessary and popular people in the school on any given morning? The Prop men and women! They may be found in the Student Store with their leader. Miss Herschuk, dispensing 1 pen- cils for standard tests, paper-backs for the forgotten book report (due at the end of C Block), or a book- cover to help thwart a detention. Top hit of the year . . . cornering the market on hooded Spartan sweatshirts! For an encore. Top Prop, Miss H., is always willing to offer a ride home to the bus-misser or a cookie for gnawing hunger pangs. Mark, the camera is over here! The ELHS Chorus impresses another crowd. The Chorus, under the vocal direction of Mr. Cheney, choraled its way through one of its most melodic years. With effortless grace, they transported listeners from foot-tapping enjoyment to standing ovations of enthusi- asm. Such hits as the Winter Concert and Spartanum deserve longer runs for the enjoyment of a wider audi- ence. 92 SIGMA SIGMA CHI The Sigma Sigma Chi Club, dedicated to serving the school and community, is under the leadership of Mr. Cannone and Mr. Cooley this year. In its initial year, SSC helped out with the blood mobile, the college fair, graduation ceremony, freshmen orienta- tion, and the American Heart Association Telethon. The members are hoping that the group will gain recognition for their accom- plishments and become an important part of our school. L to R: (Top) Sue Kenned y, Suzanne Jorey. Munch out! From bubbles to roulette wheels Spartanfest provided tremendous enjoyment for all. Twenty clubs and teams participated in this world- renowned event. In the ma- jor bout of the day, Wei-Lang Wu gulped his way to victory through the glob and mess of cherry and blue- berry pie. Many youngâuns as well as old folks had their , faces painted-courtesy of the girls swim team. There were countless games to challenge everyonesâ skills, such as the football toss by Student Council, balloon throw by the tennis team, bubble-blowing and golf by yearbook, ring toss by the freshmen, and a bean-bag toss by the Soccer Champs. No carnival would be com- plete without abundant and various foods. Full stom- achs were in order-compliments of the ham and cheese sandwich of the French Club Cafe, the fried dough of Cross Country, the popcorn and cotton candy from the Sophomore Class, and the candy of the junior high munchkins. All in all, it was a whooping success that will surely become a Spartan tradition. ALLAN, CINDY . . . Band I Homeroom Rep. 4. ANTAYA, CARL . . Soccer 1.2, BAILEY, ALAN . BAILEY, MARY , . .
