L. principalis prin- ceps: see PRINCE] 1. first in rank, authority, importance, degree, etc. 2. that is or has to do with principal, n.l. a principal person or thing; specif, (a) a chief; head, (b) a presiding or governing officer, specif, of a school; (c) a main performer or participant in a given situation. 3. (law) a person who makes use of the services of others to follow his direction. 4. that construction which gives shape or strength to a building. 5. the person who is responsible. It is with humility, respect, and sincere admiration, that the class of ' 79 dedicates its yearbook to Mr. Ralph Shindler. During the fifteen years that he has been at East Long- meadow High School, our principal has been the quiet example of a good and just administrator. With delibera- tion and utmost good humor he has built a student-teach- er-administrator relationship based on mutual respect and tolerance. Insisting on basic values, he has extended innovative responsibility to those under his jurisdiction. Whether in his office, the corridors, or cheering at some sports event, he has always been approachable, under- standing and fair. There could be no better definition of the term than Principal-n. Like a typical tourist she did everything from riding kangaroos to skiing in August. She has traveled with her Australian family, The Papps, to see the exotic sights of the outback, where Koala Bears, Wallabies and tropical birds are an everyday specta- cle. It wasn’t just fun and games for her. She attended a girls private school where she found the work more demanding and the atmosphere less casual than in the United States. Her return to familiar scenes has made her appreciate East Longmeadow all the more. This year, the Honor Society, consisting of approximately fifty juniors and seniors, has again made a tremendous contribution to ELHS. 1978-1979 was the year of the pie-eating contest, the Book Fair, and the traditional Honor Society Christmas Tea (pictured above and at right) all of which were successful, fun, and profitable. The Honor Society is partly responsible for Spartanum and contin- ues to support an Indian boy who will be graduating this year. Finally, Award’s Night always includes a high proportion of “Miss Herschuks’ Kids”. Good luck, Honor Society! Officers: Sue Brown (Sec.). Cathy Ward (Pres.), David Odato (Treas), Kathy Donatelle (V. Under the watchful eyes of ad- visors Mrs. Tibbetts and Mrs. Fleming, the French Club en- joyed another immensely pro- ductive year. Almost immediate- ly, President Cathy Ward and her disciples began work on the French delicacies to be sold at the East Longmeadow versions of sidewalk cafes”. Project fol- lowed project and the Christmas Party was festive enough to warm the heart of Ebeneazer himself. The pidce de resistance of the year, however, was the annual soiree. Due to the prep- aration and effort of the ener- getic committees, the guests were impressed by the elabo- rate decor as well as by the au- thentic gourmet food and spark- ling entertainment. Congratula- tions for a superb tour de force. Chris and Michelle parle francais a la Fete de Roi. 1st row: Paul Tarsa, Glen Robataille, Kathy Glista, Dawn Wiezbicki, Julie McGuill. The Chess Club’s 1978-1979 season was an extremely successful one, with a powerful first place finish. The team also did well in the Western Mass. Tournament which was held at the end of the season. Seniors Tony Pouliot, Tom Bechard, and Brian Day, experienced chess players, were largely responsible for the good season. Other members who also contributed were John Frangie, Chuck Dietsche, Andy Katze, and Lisa Plante. Clockwise: Mr. Burns, Lisa Plante, Tom Bechard, Brian Day, Andy Katze, Tony Pouliot. Math Team Sums It Up! The Math Club, also under the direction of Mr. Burns, had a good year because of its many strong members. Seniors Brian Day, Jennifer Blance, Cathy Ward, Paul Donlin, Randy Burd, and Anne Marie Healey coordinated their math genius to bring the team up among the top schools in each of the local meets. Juniors Chuck Dietsche and Martha Fontaine, and Sophomores James Thomas and Eugene Fitsgerald completed the team. Highlights of the year included a trip to Russell Sage College where Jennifer Blance and Cathy Ward were among the top award-winning finishers, and a trip to Auburn to compete for places on the All-Star Western Mass. Student Model Congress Club Under the gallant Lead- ership of president Ann Marie Healy and Coach Debacher, the members of the Model Congress Club were led from Springfield’s A.I.C. Con- gress to New York City’s Oceanside Congress. The group went through mountains of papers, hours of speeches, count- less votes and dozens of doughnuts, for one of their best and most com- prehensive learning years. L to R: Jennifer Blance, Ann Marie Healy, Kathy Donatelle. Standing: David O ' dato, Chuck Dietsche, Mr. Debacher, Cathy Ward, and Kathy Hurlin. New Backgammon Club This year Backgammon joined the roster of clubs here at E.L.H.S. Popular throughout the country, backgammon is an old game demanding concentration and strategic planning by the players — as well as a smile from Lady Luck — in order to win. The group ini- tially got together to learn how to play the game, but it has since become regular practice to go to room 116 on Tuesday afternoons to chance your luck with the dice. L to R: Elinor Stack, Lisa Plante, Pat Dimauro, Karen Monroe, Mark Wynn, Chris Miller, Jan Hildreth, Miss Perley, Tara Murphy. Sitting: Suzette Keddy, Richard Haley. The Lab Aides are to the Sci- ence Department as the stage hands are to the play. They can usually be found scrubbing a small mountain of dirty beakers and test tubes in room 133, mix- ing up dangerous solutions in gargantuan flasks and fighting back the ferocious weeds in the greenhouse. Lab aides are known to be ever following tru- ant fruit flies about the building, trying to return them to their vials. Without the Lab Aides, the science teachers would be virtu- ally unable to function in their usual efficient scientific manner. The 1978-1979 Spartan Spectator un- derwent a great many changes which greatly improved the caliber of the school newspaper. The size of the paper was changed to the larger tabloid size. The pa- per is now published by a new printer, Im- print, Co. Also, last year, the paper was under the direction of an editor-in-chief. This year, however, there was an editorial board consisting of five juniors - David Odato, Debbie Jaworski, Lisa Paschetto, Tanya Penman, and Cari Fisk, and three - Melissa Tompkins, Jan Hildreth, and Sue Brown. These editors spent much of their free time gathering information and or- ganizing the staff to produce an appealing paper for both the student body and the faculty. Sports Editors - seniors Paul Donlin and Mike Malesta and juniors Pat Seely and Bill Paris, worked diligently on the sports pages while Sue Keddy handled the busi- ness end and advertisements of the Spar- tan Spector. John Ward, the staff photog- rapher, took pictures while Dave Tetrault used his artistic abilities to add creativity to the newspaper. Mr. Kerson, staff advisor, put a great deal of time and effort into the Spector helping the staff put together a well-bal- anced paper. Under the leadership of di- rector John Turner and musicians Doug Hagstrom, Jim Bampos, Jeff Sey- mour, Steve Brainard, Ian Anderson, and Tom Caliento, the Spartan entou- rage thrilled many a football fan. They showed an amazing amount of im- provement this year,- playing many popular songs such as “Pink Panther’’, “Rolling Down the River , and “Big Spender” The spirit of E.L.H.S. Hotlips Doug McKenney. George Washington Slept Here Gee, Guys Gimme a break! This year’s Drama Club production, “George Washington Slept Here , was a critical success. Hampered by the thinness of the plot, the versitility of the lead actors — Jan Hildreth as Mrs. Fuller and Steve Starkie as her hus- band — showed sparks of inventive tal- ent, while the Yankee twang of Richard Haley was impeccable. Congratula- tions are in order to Mr. Calabrese who can finally catch up on some badly- needed sleep. Office Aides Picking up absentee slips and distributing at- tendence sheets are just a sampling of the many jobs the office aides per- form as part of office functions. Many free study halls are forfeited to help the office func- tion as well as it does. 104 Giving up their free time for others is just one reason why so much credit should be given to these dedicated as- sistants who spend time delivering mes- sages and doing odd jobs for our guid- ance counselors. By assisting students in the use of the com- puter and college catalogue, these aides have become an important part of the guidance depart- ment operations. •mm Sitting (L-R): Mary Bramucci, Diane Williams, Jane Saake; Standing (L-R): Mark Weiner, Sandi Feinberg, Carl Penland, Pam Parenteau, Nadia Settembre. Below: Mike Martino Despite the loss of almost all of last year ' s starting team, the ' 78 E.L. gridmen had a very successful sea- son under the watchful eye of Coach Dobias. The team finished with an 8-2 record, but it could easily have been 10-0 if a few breaks had gone their way. The first game was against Chicopee, a perennial AA power. After a hard fought first half, the Spartans led 13-7. The second half was all defense. The Spartan defense bent many times but never broke as the score remained the same and E.L. avenged last year ' s loss. Six straight victories, including tough wins over Greenfield, Northampton, and South Hadley brought the Spartans to their toughest challenge yet — Classi- cal at Plumb Field. However the squad never really got on track and were defeated 10-7. The next game brought Minnechaug, a powerful team which had a seventeen game winning streak on the line. Three quarters passed and the scoreboard found E.L. behind 27-6, but the Spartans never quit and were only down 27-21 with about three minutes left in the game. A successful onside kick gave E.L. the ball on their own 45 yard line. Unfortunately, a few penalties stalled the drive and E.L. went down to defeat for the second straight week. The last game of the season was a well- merited win over the Longmeadow Lancers, with a score of 33-22. If it is necessary to deal with uncooperative students, the follow- ing means will be employed: POINT SYSTEM Under the present point system, violation points will be assigned on the same basis as hours of detention were pre- viously assigned. After a student has accumulated a pre-set number of points, suspension will result. However, this need not occur (except in the case of rule violations which bring auto- matic suspension as stated in the student handbook) because under the point system violation points accumulated by a student will be reduced by a pre-set amount for a certain time period without a rule violation. This encourages students to develop positive behavior to avoid being suspended. Another alternative to suspension would be choice oi working off the points after school by staying for a teacher for extia help or providing pos- itive school service , but these alternatives would be voluntary at the student ' s option. HOW IT WORKS: 1. Students will be assigned points. These points will be assigned on the same basis as hours were previously assigned — one point instead of one hour. 2. Oncea student reaches six points a letter is sent home. A phone call will lie made when he reaches ten points. This letter would state his violations and give parents another copy of the point system procedure. Of course when maximum points arc assigned at one time then a phone call will be made. When it is not possible to reach the parents by phone another letter may be sent. 3. When a student reaches thirteen points he may be sus- pended from school for three days. When he returns his slate is clean. 4. Ways to avoid suspension. a. Good behavior. b. For every week of no -points -added one point will be deducted at the student ' s request . c. For every hour spent after school with a teacher for extra help, one point will be deducted if the student requests a slip and brings ; to an Assist- ant Principal. d. Once a student has reached ten (10) points he may apply to do school service. For each hour of positive work for the school on a voluntary basis one point will be deducted. 5. The school reserves the right to return to the detention system at any time without notice. ASSIGNMENT OF POINTS Points will be assigned by an Assistant Principal for: 1. Late to school. 2. Skipping a class or study hall. 3. Misbehavior in school, on school property, on field trips or school business, as well as school busses. 4. Absence from school without permission. 5. Loitering in the parking lot. 6. Loitering in the lavatories. 7. Any other acts that interfere with the learning opportunities of other students and or interfere with the operation of the school. 8. Failure to report for a teacher detention. 9. Smoking. 10. Suspicion of smoking. POLICY AND PROCEDURES RELATED TO SUSPENSION FROM EAST LONGMEADOW PUBLIC SCHOOLS I. The combined efforts of our tennis teams for 1979 were encouraging and a credit to members and coaches. The boys team was plagued by inexperience and youth and had to rely on sophomores Scott Jones, Scott Myers, Mike Frey and Chuck Dietsche. The girls team obviously benefited from seasoned seniors Kathy Hurlin and Tracy Myers, backed by under- classmen Marj Stevens, Sue Busekist, Lori LeClair and Carol Tetr ault.
