HASS PUBLIC WORKS ast Longmeadow High School ast Longmeadow, Massachusetts olume XVII PS 7 v. ' The Good Doctor Is In . . . . . . The Game Is Love All For sixteen years our favorite Georgia peach, Dr. Jakie Upshaw, has been learnin’ us the basics of tin-nis, the fundamentals of volley- bah-1, and the proper techniques of basketbah-1. Although she possesses a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Physical Education, she has not lost touch with our problems. Her concern and tart advice has straightened out more than one confused pupil and earned the love and respect of all the student body. She is more than just a great educator - — she is a great person and the greatest fan any E.L.H.S. student will ever have. In slow game periods, how many teams have heard that rallying call, “Go, Ridd”? Who else walks around 1 80 days a year in a flashy warm-up suit — or asks a restless member of a gym class, “You wanna go swimmin?” See that warm Southern smile — where else could you find it except on “Mizz” Upshaw? What can we offer a woman who has devoted so much of herself to the service of a single community? As a token of our deep affection, we dedicate Aegis ’78 to you. Dr. Jakie Upshaw. Except these kids spend very large amounts of time and energy working each year to help produce the yearbook. Through rain and snow, or foulest day, they doggedly canvas our town for patrons and ads. Aegis would not be possible without them. ’Nuff said. Mrs. McCormick 30 Super Counselors Through Realistic Problems Able to leap huge reams of paper in a single bound, race to their coffee breaks faster than a student’s car leaving the parking lot, more powerful than an irate curriculum coordinator — “Look — down in the office — It’s a bird; it’s a plane; it’s the Super Counselors!” Meet the Super Counselors, ELHS’ answer to the plea of faculty, parents and students, “HELP”. Jackson Born: August 15, 1959 Died: February 3, 1975 In Memoriam Do you remember a boy named Jackson? Ronny Jackson- a thin, big-boned boy with a wide smile? He joined us in the grades and we came along together. We shared word lists, and science fairs, and indoor gym at Birchland Park, and the ag- gravation of never being big enough or old enough to do what we wanted. Remember Ron? He was like each of us ... quiet when things went wrong; pushing down the halls, laughing and noisy with relief when things were great. There were people he liked who became friends; others he didn’t like and didn’t bother with; some he never knew. Before summer officially begins this year, our class will be graduated; this part of our lives will be over. We’re looking back and looking ahead, trying to choose what comes next. It is frighten- ing and exhilerating for all of us- except for Ronny Jackson. He died, a freshman, in 1974. We set this page aside for him. Remember Ronny? ! I _ 64 Edward Ouimet Born: May 23, 1960 Died: January 11, 1978 “To lose the life you have, for greater life; To leave the friends you loved, for greater loving; To find a land more kind than home, more large than earth — Whereon the pillars of this earth are founded, Toward which the conscience of the world is tending — A wind is rising, and the rivers flow. ' ” 65 Cheerleaders Inspire Spartans This year, as always, the cheerleaders have shown their never ending faith in our Spartan teams by devoting seeming- ly unlimited amounts of time and energy to their cause. When the time comes for giving credit where credit is due, the cheerleaders are forgotten more often than not. They have no scores, merely perfect record of attendance, which speaks for itself. When the going got rough, they were always there to booster the morale of the mighty Spartan warriors with their cries of “Go Red, go!” The cheerleaders have seen the players and fans alike through many unparalleled victories. However, under the excellent coaching of Mr. Fassnacht and Mr. Callahan, the 77-78 squad surpassed all pre-season predictions as they finished second in the league with a 10-6-2 record, good enough to earn a post season playoff berth. This year marked the arrival of several promising new faces on the hockey scene, including; Jimmy Trase, high scoring wing; John McCullough, the team’s leading scorer; and Ted Fitzgerald, an excellent left wing. Highlights of the year included a tremendous 4-3 victory over Minnechaug and ties with league leaders Longmeadow and Easthampton. In the playoffs, the Spartans took on the top seeded Taconic team. The redmen played all out in an effort that left the score at 2-1 Taconic, after two periods, as the result of the brilliant goaltending of Spartan netminder Chris Trinceri. In the last period, the Braves broke down the EL defense, scoring three times to make the final score 5-2. The team wishes to thank the many fans who helped make the 78 team the success that it was. At E.L.H.S., every student is furnished with a vast menu of foods, consisting of soups, sandwiches, and Cheez’n Crackers. At forty cents, the daily specials cannot be topped. Seriously, we owe much to these women who have toiled over grill and stove all year round, to provide students and faculty that extra gas to get them through the day. Perhaps someday we could take them out to lunch. 145 Janitors Often unnoticed, the burly boys of the boiler room worked their fingers to the bone this year. And as if the chore of keeping our hallowed halls clean wasn’t enough, the custodians also had to shovel out the mountains of snow that left E.L.H.S. marooned during February. One other project that seemed to bring the working men out of the woodwork, was the installation of smoke alarms in the hallways. After four years of dedicated service to the class of ’78, they deserve our thanks for a job well done. Below: A few of the faithful E.L.H.S. custodial engineers. This definition doesn’t really say a lot since a teacher is really much more than mere words can express. In or- der to truly educate, a teacher needs wide experience in many fields, and students can gain this necessary background by working in the F.T.A. Every week, students visit the elementary schools in town and spend one or two hours working with young children in many areas. In this way, F.T.A. can help the stu- dent decide whether he or she really has what it takes to be a professor of learning. • v Doreen Simmons Eileen Speight Jeffrey St.John Donald St. Peter Steven Starkie Wendy Stebbins 165 Julie Marc Tetrault Tetrault Melissa Tompkins Laura Steele Rosemary Stella Lisa Tesini David Tetrault Margaret Tongue Mary Topitzer Gregory Towle Shannon Tracy Howard Traver Chris Trinceri Richard Trudeau Weiner 166 Wendy Steven White Whitney James Wilier Jeffrey Kathleen Williams Willis Michael David Wilson Yacavone Vincent Zuccala Chris Miller J.P. However, they have not tried to gear publication to national standards but to the interests of the students that purchase the paper. Trying to appeal to a vast group of very different people has never been an easy task; staff members readily admit this. They have tried to add to the variety of information contained in the school’s paper because that is exactly what the “Spartan Spectator” should be . . . the school’s paper. Coverage of sports, club activities, school and area issues have been viewed as important and balancing of these has been a challenge. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy all of the time about what is covered and what is not. Staff members are hard on themselves. Peers are harder still. Overall, from the advisor, Mr. Kerson, whose time and energy was devoted unyieldingly, to the ad managers, to the writers, each person believed in the paper and its strong points and strove to make others believe the same.
