Housed in this building are the principal and superintendent's offices. As we pass from one floor to another, we first smell chemicals from the chemistry lab and and then aromas from the home economics room. Still, to us, it represents our Alma Mater ldear school motherl to whom we will always remain loyal and true. All eighth graders are eager to enter this building, but as sopho- mores they are just as eager to leave it, Built back in the days when our grandparents were tripping over street-car tracks, it is still used by the frosh of ELHS. The old clock on top has endlessly tolled the hours for the students as well as for the residents of the town. Yes, we'll always remember the old Central Building with the town clock on its castle-like tower, Closely connected with the three other buildings is the Carnegie Library. Here students may find all the necessary references which they need to do their school work. Standing across from the Central Building, its stately architecture has long been familiar to the students. They can spend quiet hours browsing through the books until they find one that suits them. Yes, it would have been almost impossible to finish school without the aid of the Carnegie Library. New and modern is our Memorial Auditorium. This is the favorite building of all students, not only because of its beauty but also because of the fun and enjoyment we have had here. Proms, dances, parties, plays, concerts, assemblies-are all held here. Many times in this building we have cheered our basketball teams and wrestlers on to victory. With these victories come pride, a pride toward our school and a pride in our hearts that we are a part of ELHS. Library Makes Good Catalyst , V---.Q S 1 JF' Q, 413: 1 I' f, .I . Fowler and P. Richman. How to arrange a pleasant and proper table and to use etiquette are two of the many techniques learned in home economics classes. While some students are out on the road doing actual driving, B. Birch, on the left, checks her reaction time on the brake, and N. Boyd looks into the machine that measures the maximum angle at which one can see horizontally. These students are in dead earnest about staying alive while driving. lf wg, -'A x. fan. - 5 ,4 Happy fvfzfrmulrz 9Q2:.E:,if t -'la lust a lat of mean- ingless words un- less one can asso- ciate them with real things -- and why not be hoppy about it at the same time. X WM For many years the students of E L H S have been working together, having club projects, saving tax stamps, sponsoring dances, and count- less other activities to make possible the public address system which is now in operation. This was the year it was achieved. The P-A System's ghostly voice surprised the students one un- expected morning Iast fall. It makes communication possible between the High School, Central, and the M-A. The system cost the Student Council, sponsor of the project, over SS4,000. All who in any way have helped to make this task a success are to be commended. If JJ 50 d mv ning my This intricate switchboard for the public address system with its dozens of switches, plugs, and dials is being operated by Wayne Williams as Paul Cox, seen in the broadcasting room, waits for the go-ahead signal. The sys- tem will contact one or all rooms and permits two-way communication. Besides daily bulletins, radio broadcasts- both student and professional-and recordings can be heard where desired. The deans can work much more promptly and efficiently, the principal can be assured that no one is missing important announcements, and teachers in Central and High School buildings can request important radio or student broadcasts. lt was a long and expensive job acquiring the P-A system, but surely worth it. All modern school plants and factories are so equipped. 4 ll 31.3 53, L Z9-V4 Frosh promenade and snake dance be- fore upperclassmen on Freshman Day, the joyous time for greenies, when they can dis- card their armbands and become full- fledged high school men and women. This trophy was voted to Tom by the members of the team, Tom also did most of the punting, and he was an excellent quick kicker. Ron Davis performed well at tackle in his tirst year of varsity ball, however, he was sidelined a large part of the season with injuries. Irv Flint played offensive tackle and defensive center, where he used his size to great advantage. jim Barker performed quite capably at his position as defensive end. Jim Mitchell, one of the toughest members on the squad, played the other defensive end position, he also saw some action as a blocking back on offense. This was the first year on the varsity for line- man Sam Kohler, end Len Hanlon, back Ken Daniels, and end Frank Hilliard. Although they saw only limited action, they performed well under the circumstances. Seniors Dan Cooper receives the Bill Booth Memorial Trophy from Carl Werner, Y. M. C. A. General Secretary. Beginning with the circulation campaign in October, many busy weeks fol- lowed, These included such elements as lay- ing out and sticking up pages, writing copy, taking pictures, making dummy sheets, doing art work, and selling advertising. Some of the unseen elements of the overall picture were the many nights and Saturdays spent in experimenting and testing to prove new the- ories on how to make the book better than ever, the headaches when some of thetexperi- ments failed to work, and the joy felt by each chemist when the task was finished. PLYMOUTH 89 The lunior-Senior Choir, under the direction of Mr. Lawrence Beck, has made great strides this year. lt started off the year by making a television appearance over WDTV. Among other activities were the annual Christmas Program and the operetta which was pres- ented in March. The Choir also presented many concerts around town, some of which were at the Rotary, Elks, and Masons clubs. Many of these concerts were at the Country Club and have brought recognition to the Ou Choir throughout the city. lt was a great thrill also for the Choir to have appeared with the internationally fam- ous pianists, Morley and Gearhart. Other acti- vities included several radio broadcasts, one over radio station KDKA, and the Junior-Sen- ior Choir Concert at the end of the year. JCL Adds Classic Substance Originated in the fall of l936, the Junior Classical League is a national organization of many local chapters in secondary schools throughout the United States and its territor- ies. ln the Junior Classical League at ELHS there were approximately seventy-five mem- bers this past year, The only national requisite for membership is a genuine interest in the classics. The qualifications at ELHS for this club are: either at least a B average during the first and second years of Latin or an ad- vanced Latin course, an interest in the clas- sics, and the purchase ofa pin. The purpose of the club is to encourage an interest in the appreciation of civilization, language, literature, and art of ancient Greece and Rome, and to give some under- standing of the debt of our own culture to that of classical antiquity. First used in l94O the ELl-IS method of class officer elec- tions, similar to national elections, was instituted by Miss Olive lkirt and her Democracy students, who wished to pre- vent dishonest acts such as stuffing the ballot boxes. Since then the elections have been carried on honestly and most democratically. This year the Board of Elections was com- posed ot ten junior and senior members under chairmanship of Carolyn Smith. The new principal was so impressed that he wrote an article for the Ohio Schools magazine and accompan- ied it with a picture story of three photographs: the students campaigning, the voting, and the Election Board at work. Besides tabulating the returns, the Board distributes and collects petitions, instructs the homeroom precinct workers and gets the ballots ready. HAMILTON BARBERS DIAMOND WALLPAPER 103 1 At B1l5 PAM. on February 22, the curtain rose on Father of the Bride, a comedy presented by the i952 Sen- ior Class. A full house sat spellbound for two and one-half hours. The play was directed by Mrs. Stella Birnbaum, speech teacher, ln the beginning Stanley Banks re- ceives a shock when he hears that he is going to lose his daughter to a boy whom he distrusts, and he hesitates to meet with the parents of this groom his daughter has chosen, Mr. Banks and the groom-to-be both feel that a wedding ought to be something simple, the bride and her mother feel differently, The men are forced to agree on what Stanley calls a tribal rite. This involves presents, receptions, trousseau, hundreds of guests, an expensive wedding cake, and champagne. In the above picture of the cast from left to right are: B. Bickerton, T. To create and maintain high standards of Christian character throughout the school and community' is their motto. This year the boys started out with a project, which was cleaning the Hi Teen. Some of the ways they earn money for their clubs are by selling pencils and pens and refreshments. They entertained the student body with a play at their assembly, February 27. The clubs try to de- velop the social as well as the mental and physical sides. A box social, a dance, and a splash party were planned for the spring. E. work day after day getting news of interest for the students and faculty, Each member of the staff has a specific job to do and by combining their ef- forts and work, they produce a paper which ranks among the top in the nation. As added attractions the staff puts out special issues at Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas and also all-girl, junior and all-boy issues, which are favorites of the students. Last summer five members of the staff attended Ohio University at Athens to learn new and better techniques needed in order to produce a better paper. Each year the K. E. staff participates in the Kelly project contest, which requires a project promoted in the wel- fare of the school, citizens, or community. This year they helped pass the school bond issue which will give the city three new school buildings, two junior highs and one elementary. Although there is much work connected with the production of a paper, the entertain- ment provided for the staff, such as dances, meetings with other schools, and their annual K. E. party reward them for their hard work. The K. E. is a self-supporting business project conducted by the student staff members themselves. News Dose Copyreading, drawing cartoons, and getting out extras are other tasks of the K. E. staff mem- bers. Clockwise: P. Bryan, F. Ossmann, J. Wines, G. Smith, J. Irving, M. A. Irwin, B.
