J314, Jim, One of the most interesting and progressive periods in the early history of our schools began about 1890, when Professor R. E. Rayman succeeded Professor S. D. Sonor as superintendent. In that year Miss Florence Updegraff was named high school principal under Rayman, holding the position until the close of the 1926-27 term. The high school enrollment in 1890 was 50, including 38 girls and 12 boys, the graduating class totaled 11 in the spring of 1891. Three years later, the enrollment had reached 80 and in the fall of 1897 it was 154 with a total of four teachers. The present enrollment is 1,443. The Central School, which now houses the frosh and sophs, was constructed during 1893-94 and was ready for use by September of 1895. The so-called High School Building at Broadway and Fourth streets is a structure of three floors and basement which was built in 1914. This building also has o gymnasium and auditorium. In April 1941 the Memorial Auditorium, which seats 1,600, was started but wasn't completed until January 1945. In these three buildings the Potters live. From the time of the early migration of settlers to this day the Ohio has been a strategic artery of national ex pansion From the eastern seaboard there were many routes to the inland the Hudson the Delaware the St John the ' fm, Penobscot, the Connecticut, the Potomac, and the James, but beyond the Appalachian range there was and is only one river, the Ohio, to play its vital part in the development of these United States, The Great Lakes did not become on emigration route until the steamboat had established its reputation in the third decade of the nineteenth century. On the Ohio were first the canoes of the Indians and settlers bearing packs of furs, casks of salt and provisions. Next came the killboats, flatboats, poled-rafts, and barges. Then came the steam- boat age, and a glorious age it was. Deep-toned river whistles sounded the swift advance of cities such as Pitts- burgh, Cincinnati, and Louisville, of smaller cities such as East Liverpool, Stubenville, Wheeling, and Huntington. More important even than that, the Ohio and its tributaries spread population to the whole state. As the first steamer puffed down the Ohio, frontiersmen gazed in stupefaction. Long after it had gone they were still looking toward the west and the future. Something had passed them and yesterday was very far away. We can give you this glimpse into the past and we can picture in this book the events of today but you dear reader will be a character in the story of the future of the High School by the River Ohio Mary Ellen Small ,f-
