BAND VERYBODY UP! Here comes that snappy East Liverpool High School Band. Those blue and white uniforms surely look nice. They'1'e recognized throughout the state of Ohio as representative of the best in band music. W'ith the long list of superior ratings Mr. Johnson. the director, and the band have produced. it's no Wonder competition gets keener every year. They added another superior rating to their honors this year when they tied for Iirst place in the sectional contest held at Steubenville. The otiicers for this year's band we1'e ldugene Naylor, Presi- dentg Joseph Manlovitz, Vice-l'resident3 and Rollin Shattenberg, Secretary-Treasurer. The Board of Directors include the otlicers. Chuck Smith, Alwyn Purinton, Bill Alexander, and Dick Kidder The band is see11 at all football games, no matter what the weather. They always put on a good show. Much practice is put in every week preparing for these shows. They may be seen marching at least three times at week, to Patterson Field to prac- tice these tricky maneuvers. Their motto seemed to be that old sayinge The show must go on. But this isn't the only place they were seen. They could be seen in parades for patriotic purposes. winter concerts in the High School Auditorium, and in a series of summer concerts sponsored by a local merchant. The band numbered about eighty-tive this year. Due to last years graduation, a new drum major had to be selected before school started. Finally he was found. His name is .lack Wilson, a senior, who made a nice appearance for the year. .lack was assisted by three junior drum majors who were still in grade school These boys were Dave Kinsey. Ronnie Boston, and Virgil Sayre. They, too, made a nice appearance and showed excellent training which was done by Homer Campbell. They we1'e known as the Twirling Trio and thrilled crowds from all the Ohio Valley with their stunts. The East Liverpool High School Band is constantly in demand for concerts, parades, and other activities. Year after yea1', they bring home the bacon for dear old E. li. H. S. Graduation hits the band hard this yea1'. taking twenty-three members: but the band will be back with more honors for the alma mater. Our band is also noted being one of the very few all-boy bands in the state. BAND ORCHESTRA HE High School Orchestra is also conducted by Mr. Ralph Johnson. The orchestra, this year, numbered about forty boys and girls. They, too, are in constant demand and show excellent training. They have been heard at school chapels, band concerts and most all plays produced in the local high school auditorium. Although this organization has never entered a contest of any kind. lt is known for its ability and Wide variety of music. The High School Orchestra, like any other musial organiza- tion, practices regularly through the week and holds long and hard rehearsals. The orchestra is hampered somewhat by the room in which they practice. lt is the ancient bandroom in the attic of the Central Building. It has been assured. however. that this will be remedied by the construction of the new gymnasium, which has already been started and is hoped to be completed in six months. This will surely improve the High School orchestra. The lligh School Orchestra was heard at the band concerts during the winter and pleased the audiences greatly with its wide selection and variety of music. Graduation also hits the orchestra hard this year. It is estimated that between ten and fifteen members will be lost to this year's graduation class. The orchestra is well-known for its dependability. It can always be counted on to furnish music for high school plays. chapels, concerts, and any other activity for which music is needed. The lligh School Orchestra has progressed steadily since Prof. Johnson stai'ted it with the aid of the recently retired Professor Laughlin. This lll'St High School Orchestra was started in 1924. The lack of string instruments at that time, however, hindered it. In those days, more girls studied string, brass, and reed instru- ments. The Iirst orchestra consisted of about Iifteen or sixteen. The largest membership of the High School Orchestra was about fifty. - i f -ii tiki. ie A ORCHESTRA
