Student Life SPEC is a summer program designed for High School Students who demonstrate special academic and leadership qualities. Students selected for this program attend one of three local colleges for two weeks at the beginning of summer vacation. Students who attended during the summer of 1985 are: Staci Faulknen Shawn Devine, Rachel Keeveig Scott Hancock fCatawba Collegel, Amy Ballard, Donita Mullins, and Laura Morgan IPfeiffer Collegel. According to Amy Ballard, speaking for the group, lt was a lot of hard work, but it was a lot offun, too. Again this yean Steve Melby led the Mustangs rushing attack. This news comes as no surprise, for Steve has been the leading rusher since his sophomore year when he first started varsity football. He is recognized by his teammates as a hard and fast-running back. Steve was voted to a well-deserved position on last year's all-conference team as punter In his senior season, he has averaged over fifty yards per punt in some games. After being chosen afizpre-season standout, he did not disappoint anyone. Steve became the school's all-time single season rushing leader with 1,030 yards. As a senion he was again voted all-conference and WLON Player of the Year 13 K- I Sandy Bolick served as East's delegate to the 1985 Western Civitan Youth Conference held at Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs. During her busy week, she attended interesting lectures and experi- enced good fellowship with other delegates representing other schools in Western North Carolina. Sandy also served as a 1985 Legislative Page. During her week in Raleigh, she served the Representatives in the North Carolina House by running errands and assisting in any other ways needed,

alioe in the hearts ofthe young and old This past August, Tucker 's Grove Campground celebrated its 109th year of worship. The campground meeting is sponsored by six area churches and attracts worshippers from as far away as Boston and New York. Camp meeting began here in 1876 when a farmen Clay Tucken donated five acreas of land as a permanent site for the camp- ground. Its history has not been simple. The campsite has sur- oivedfires, rain, and two polio epidemics in the 1940's. It still has the original steeple and posts in the arbon and the worship center is still located in the middle ofthe 100 tent campground. Trying out the night are Lisa Ward and Ashley Struwser Marie, Tanya, and Melodie: The Supremes Life at the Sherrill's Tent. Nina Beal is all dressed up and no where to go
