The Grange C rush De ense l s Bad To The Bone East Defense Shuts Out Lineolnton 21-Zero! One half of the Bruise Brothers, jeff Warren, and Willy linebacker jerry joe Woodby zero in on an unsuspecting Warrior vi. Mark Mayo runs back an inter- ception and in doing so runs his way to All-Conference. Along with four returning starters, East Lincoln welcomed back two former outstanding players Derek johnson and Nicky Bazzle as coaches. Despite a relatively young defense, East fared rather well through the season. Returning veterans jason Hellen Rob Davis, john Ritten and Mark Mayo along with Steve Hagen jeff Warren, jerry joe Woodby, Patrick Bailey, Harold Anderson, and of course the Wild Man jerry Smith proved to be a defense with its ups and downs. They, howeven finished with a flurry, shutting out Lincolnton, holding them to only 80 total yards, and intercepting four St. Stephens passes. The highlight of the season came in the last game when two unsportsman-like penalties were called against East. On the following four plays a fired-up ORANGE CRUSH Defense sacked the Indians causing them to lose over 40 yards. john Ritter and Mark Mayo were later named to the All-Conference team. Swarming Mustang Defenders Harold Anderson fnumber 232 and Sam linebacker john Ritter fnumber 642 never give the back a chance, catching him in the backfield. Leaders of the secondary, Bruise Brothers Steve Hager and jeff Warren are both known for their witty remarks and hard play both on and off the field.

Offensive Page Nobody can hold the Mayo! This year's Mustang Offensive was af- fected by a slow start, averaging only sev- en points for the first three games. Then the offensive came alive in the fourth game when they switched from a Power I to a Wishbone backfield. The offensive had super potential. It held three-year starters Mark Mayo and Steve Melby re- turning at split end and running back, an experienced quarterback, Harvey Tarlton, not to mention the largest and strongest line in East Lincoln history. The offensive line, known as the HOGS contained se- niors Rob Davis, Steve Cribb, and Iason Hellen and juniors Brian Nichols and jeff Wolfie Wood. Honorary HOG Steve Manning the Mustang wishbone attack, Harvey Tarlton pitches back while Stacky Ballard provides ample blocking. Hager led the Mustangs with 19 receptions. The offense had general- ly a straight forward attack. It tended to run up the middle with super blocking provided by the H OGS and fullback Stacky Ballard. Howeven the offense could generate excitement. Ask Hibriten! In the opening conference game, East exploded for 40 points in three quar- ters, the most points scored in six years by an East Lincoln team. Steve Melby plows his way through number one ranked West Caldwell defense. X X X x x X X. xf Xosgzsis O O Wolfie Double - Ice Right East I.incoln't huge offensive line is ready, willing, and able. We're here to cheer. . . come party with us . . . Upon reaching the final years of our High School lives, the Varsity Cheerleading Squad, as a unit, practiced, competed, and won. They have achieved their level of excellence and strive for more. When faced with defeat, they never lost hope, and with each victory they shone. While at camp, they received excellent reviews and won blue ribbons each night. Wendy Haymore was nominated for All American, and camp came to a close with the most Spirited Award given to them by a unanimous vote of all the other squads. Other honors and rewards were re- ceived as well. For instance, Angie Covington was voted Most Spirited. Each of these individuals has in his own unique way been instrumental in generating that spirit that sets them apart from all other squads. We say good-bye to our ' SENIORS.
