Players leave their mark Outstanding Mustangs: When students and fans look back on the 1985 season, it will be remembered for the outstand- ing play and remarkable abilities of the players. There were three long-standing records broken by members of the team. First, of course, is senior running back Steve Melby, who became the first Mustang in school history to break 1,000 yards rushing in a single season. just as remarkable as the record was the way in which Melby broke it. With only two games left in the season, the yardage goal seemed out of reach. In the third quarter of the last game against St. Stephens, Melby found that he needed a little over eleven yards to break the 1,000 mark. On the following play, a fired-up Mustang team helped to give Melby a 70 yard run, shattering the record. Melby ended the game with 210 yards and both a single game and single season rushing record. In recognition of his efforts, Melby received the WLON player of the week award twice, the WLON player of the yean and was named a WBTV Sundrop player of the week. The Defense contained two record-breaking players, also. Linebacker Iohn Ritten a junior led the Mustangs in tackles in 9 of 10 games and averaged 10 solo tackles with six assists. Ritter fell short of the record of 104 solo tackles by only two. After the season ended, it was learned that his combined total of 161 tackles was the most ever in a season by a Mustang Player Three year starter Mark Mayo became another defensive weapon. Over the course of three years, he intercepted 13 passes, 6 of them this year His speed and quickness allowed him to return a few for touchdowns and help the Mustangs out of several tight situations. During the off season, Mitch's Body Flex Gym became the summer hangout for most of the team. Three of the most outstanding lifters were Rob Davis, Brian Morlan, and Greg Branch. They were members of Mitch's Powerlifting Team, which competed in the Polk County invita- tional meet. The team placed first over all. Brian Morlan placed Fourth, while Rob Davis came in first in the heavyweight division, with a total lift of over 1300 pounds. Al. Yes! Rob Davis is wearing a belt during his warm up set. 99

Offensive Page Nobody can hold the Mayo! This year's Mustang Offensive was af- fected by a slow start, averaging only sev- en points for the first three games. Then the offensive came alive in the fourth game when they switched from a Power I to a Wishbone backfield. The offensive had super potential. It held three-year starters Mark Mayo and Steve Melby re- turning at split end and running back, an experienced quarterback, Harvey Tarlton, not to mention the largest and strongest line in East Lincoln history. The offensive line, known as the HOGS contained se- niors Rob Davis, Steve Cribb, and Iason Hellen and juniors Brian Nichols and jeff Wolfie Wood. Honorary HOG Steve Manning the Mustang wishbone attack, Harvey Tarlton pitches back while Stacky Ballard provides ample blocking. Hager led the Mustangs with 19 receptions. The offense had general- ly a straight forward attack. It tended to run up the middle with super blocking provided by the H OGS and fullback Stacky Ballard. Howeven the offense could generate excitement. Ask Hibriten! In the opening conference game, East exploded for 40 points in three quar- ters, the most points scored in six years by an East Lincoln team.
