Boasting size in the offensive line and experience at key positions, East looked to end the current string of four losing sea- sons and make the playoffs this year: East Lincoln was a physically imposing team, averaging almost 200 pounds on the start- ing 11. Once again, the team fell one game short of the playoffs, placing them third in the newly-formed Big 6. Depth and a difficult schedule proved to be the team's downfall. Through the course of the season, East had to face such opponents as the number one ranked West Caldwell team, and Kings Mountain, who fell only two games short of a state cham- pionship. Five of six teams that East lost to went on to the state playoffs. jason Hellen a three-year starter as Outside Linebacker and Centeig was the spiritual leader of the team, which contained 31 varsity and 22 jayvee members. All seniors served as Captains during games. As in years past, the team was plagued by a slow start, but seemed to have recov- ered by the second game. East forced a powerful Kings Mountain team into over- time, only to lose on the fourth play. The first win came with the defeat of county rival West Lincoln, 21 to 6. East then opened the new conference schedule with style, blasting Hibriten with a score of 40 to Z 96 East gains yardage on the way to county title. I - . . . - Q I . . 9 my W 1 -1 . Q., - . to finish 3rd in New Conference The climax of the season had to come in the final week when the Lincolnton game was postponed until the fol- lowing Monday. In a steady rain, a few devoted fans watched East Lincoln end seven years of frustration. East shut-out their bitter rival Lincolnton 21 to 0, making East the County Champions. The following Friday, in the seniors' last game, a group of determined players left their mark on the football program by setting several impressive records in a win over St. Ste- phens. This is one of the bet- ter groups we have had here, Coach Bolick stated. Their teamwork and togetherness have been outstanding. I feel really bad that we didn't ac- complish what we set out to do, which was to make the playoffs. East Dominates Lincolnton and West Lincoln for County Title!!
