As a long-time member of the faculty, he has seen many changes and improvements in the school. He has helped in the initiation and fulfillment of some of these, and he has always been a willing and enthusiastic rooter for the betterment of Leyden. For more than a quarter of a century, students have felt his interest and concern in helping them prepare for their future roles in an increasingly more complex world. As a teacher of industrial arts, mechan rc. drawing, and architectural drafting, ho has helped numerous Leyden boys realize their ambitions of learning useful skills and becoming productive members of society. During his service at Leyden Mr. Watson has also taught general science, has coached all sports, and has served as athletic director. It is to you, Mr. Watson, with our humblest respect and most sincere appreciation, that we, the staff of this yearbook and the students of Leyden Community High School, dedicate the 1957 edition of the EAGLE. Page 19 rv-V is d Leyden's Curriculum Coordinating-Council meets daily to help promote the smooth functioning of the school. The Council is concerned with all experiences planned or sponsored by the school which in-’ elude ol affect the student. Interschool activities, course of study, organized activites of the faculty, and school-community activities are all topics for their study. HELP US PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE As days go by, our administration and faculty think of modern ways to guide the student at Leyden. They encourage the Leyden student to have confidence in himself, so that he may gain a stable position in the years which are ahead of him. Although these people who are our daily aids during high school life aren't fully appreciated now, they will nevertheless have played a great part in every student's life at Leyden Where We Prepare for the Future. ADMINISTRATION AND BOARD OF Guiding the operation of a large school is no small task. As future citizens, young people need the backing of a wise and efficient administration. Mr. Wade A. Steel, as Leyden's superintendent for the past five years, provides leadership in helping make Leyden a school where the student can prepare himself well for the future. Since the passage of the bond issue for West Leyden High School, Mr. Steel has devoted a large portion of his time and efforts to plans for the new school. Working with Mr. Steel in the guidance of the school is assistant superintendent Walter D. Stille. Mr. Stille offers the students leadership in the areas of arrangement of schedules, student guidance, student personnel management, and the scheduling of events via the school official calendar. For seniors, with their high school education ended, it meant in just a short lime they would be able to put their skill to practical use. The underclassmen were still studying and acquiring their skills in the school where they prepare for the future. In 1953 nearly 50C freshmen came through the doors of Leyden. We were the largest class to enroll. Wc wont to the gym and were welcomed to our new school. We grouped with our friends and looked at the crowd Surely we'd never know all these kids. Election timo came around and we chose Bill Welter as president. Toni Tornabene as veep, Adele Talaga as secretary, and Ralph Bielick as treasurer. In October we watched the Homecoming assembly with great awe, all of us wondering who would be queen when we became seniors Our sophomore year started In confusion. Tho school was being enlarged and we had to suffer through piles of bricks and boards. As sophomores we sponsored Baseball Night to help raise money for our junior-senior prom. We elected Ralph Bielick, Toni Tornabene, Kay Hammar-gren, and Barb Saari as our officers. With them and the Advisory Council we worked to raise funds — worked from the first day of school to the last. Whether it was selling concessions or sponsoring a dance, we were there. We held the Turnabout and then started planning our prom. Along came April, and bag and baggage was packed and wo hoadod for Washington. We really painted the town red. It was an Evening of Enchantment at tho Oak Park Country Club where our hard work came to a climax Our junior year ondod far too soon Adele Talaga, Jean Miller, Peggy Warnock, and Pat Ban-yerl were elected to lead the aonior class. We looked forward to Homecoming even more than before because this was OUR year. Adele Talaga was crowned queen in an impressive assembly and lator reigned over tho Homecoming dance, Silhouettes in Silver. Instead of having the Christmas pageant, we participated in a Christmas play Then came our Senior Snowball, “Winter Wonderland. Never was there a better dance. Before long we were measured for our caps and gowns. Then came our prom and finally graduation. Four years of our life passed all too swiftly and now we must say good-bye to old L.C.H.S. — our home. JUNIORS, CLASS OF 1958 This year, as in the past, the Junior class has tried to make the Jiinior-Senior Prom an event which will be long-remembered. The class officers, the advisory council, and the Juniors, themselves, have all contributed to the accomplishment of this goal. The Junior class sponsored the annual Turnabout, the all school play, the basketball game concessions, and the Black Cat dance, this year, in order to make their Prom a success. It can be truly said that the Junior class of 1957 attained their goal. JUNIOR CLASS ADVISORY COUNCIL, left to right: Row 1: Joan Killinger, Linda Heining, Stephanie Kopp Row 2: Dorothy Wales. FRESHMEN, CLASS OF 1960 Nine months ago when the camera snapped, these students were new to Leyden. They discovered that Leyden was not the same as grade school; there were adjustments to be made. During the ensuing months, as things became more familiar, the freshmen elected officers and became an accepted part of the student body. A major activity of the freshman class was the production of Green Valley.'' At rehearsal here are. left to right. Jack Allen, Leonard Mercier, David Field. BODY BUILDING AND . . . CHARACTER BUILDING To the average Leyden student, a scene in competitive sports is considered an important part in his activities. The athletic program consists of character building as well as body building to pursue a well rounded personality. Whether a spectator or participant, however, the field of athletics is enjoyed by all. 91 Working behind the scenes of any athletic event can be found Mr. Sam England, athletics director. For nineteen years, Mr. England has directed I-eyden's sports events. In 1938, this gentleman from the Show Me state of Missouri arrived at Leyden. Since then, under his expert guidance, Leyden's sports offerings have grown from five teams and four coaches to ten varsity sports, twenty-eight inter-scholastic teams and seventeen coaches. Coach England graduated from high school in Maryville, Missouri, where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He attended college at Northwest Missouri State lettering in football. He taught for two years in Savannah, Missouri, one year at Jackson, Missouri, six years at Virden, and the past nineteen here at Leyden. 92 VARSITY FOOTBALL MANAGERS Left to right: J. Low, B. Cherry, E. Richau, J. Schiferl. FOOTBALL For all the Leyden football teams, 1956 was not an exceptional year as far as team records are concerned. However, it will be remembered as the year in which school spirit got behind the teams. The spirit was most obvious at the away from home games. At the first away game, only two bus loads of students went. In the away games in the latter part of the season, as many as six bus loads, over three hundred students, were present. Everyone will remember the game against Argo, where at their homecoming game, Leyden had almost the same number of fans as the opposition. At the same game, the march of Eagle fans around the field led by a small pep band will be remembered. If continued in future years, this same school spirit and pride will contribute greatly to the growth of better school teams and a better school in the future. The opening game with Arlington Heights could have been an omen of the forthcoming season that the Eagles would have. Coach Bujan's boys tied the Cardinals 12 to 12, getting exactly no place. In their opening home game against Gage Park, the Eagles put on a good show for the crowd and won 19 to 13. The South Suburban League season was opened against Kankakee, who beat the Loydenites 13 to 6. After that, however, the varsity gridmen started looking good and won their next four games. Lockport fell 7 to 0. Thornton Fractional was shut out 14 to 0 to give the Eagles a clean cut Homecoming victory. Continuing their victorious rampage, the Leydenites walloped Argo 19 to 12 at their Homecoming. The team was probably at its best when it defeated Blue Island 6 to 0 in a hard-fcught battle. All the credit should be given to the defensive team, said assistant varsity coach Richard Perry. School spirit rose to its highest point then too. Over three hundred Leyden fans went to the away games. Even a small pep band appeared several times. Then the balloon burst; it was found that one of the Leyden players was playing in violation of the twenty year age limit set by the Illinois High School Athletic Association. All the previous games played by the Eagles were called forfeited. From a two way tie for second place, the Eagles weie suddenly in the cellar with a blank record. The Eagles, their wings clipped, fell to leagueleading Thornton and Bloom for their final games. Athletic director Mr. Sam England summed up the season very well. Though the record books are blank for the Eagles, they cannot hide the fine job that the team did throughout the season as far as school spirit and playing ability are concerned. se L ; 4 Dave Litviuk 95 Glen Brand Wayne Lunak Ralph Bielick Harry Forsberg Jean Budingor VARSITY SCHEDULE Leyden 12 Arlington Heights 12' Leyden 19 Gage Park 13' Leyden 6 Kankakee 13 Leyden 7 Lockport 0 Leyden 14 Fractional 0' Leyden 19 Argo 12 Leyden 6 Blue Island 0 Leyden 0 Thornton 27 Leyden 0 Bloom 21 ’ Games Forfeited VARSITY FOOTBALL, left to right Standing: D. BASKETBALL COACHES Left to right: L. Granzin, G. Cox. Not pictured: J. Thomas, F. Diegl. BASKETBALL Even before the football team had played its final game of the year, the enthusiastic sound of roundball hopefuls could be heard coming from the Rose Street fieldhouse. This year, the team was looking forward to a successful season in the South Suburban League. As prospects for the varsity, there were representatives from last year's sophomore SSL champions and the 1955 soph title holders. The most important players to return were last year's varsity letter men: Irv Kossack, Ron Gates, and Bob Allen. The Eagles, coached by Mr. George Cox, started off the season in a pre-league opener against Niles and won by six points. They then dropped a game to Rock Island, one of the top teams in the state. After this, they proceeded to win their first two league games against Kankakee and Fractional. Taking a rest from SSL play, they defeated Arlington Heights. Then Argo fell to Leyden's superior court play. Visiting from another league, DeKalb fell prey to the Eagles. About this time, hopes were way up and the varsity didn't let the school down, as they beat Blue Island. The fans were shocked when the Eagles fell to the Leyden Alumni squad 41 to 40, but they shrugged it off, for after all it wasn't an official game. The Leyden fans had a bigger shock when Leyden was defeated by Niles in the First Annual Hardwood Holiday Tournament. The tourney, which was played at Leyden, took the place of the traditional DeKalb Tournament. Hopes soared as the Eagles defeated Wheaton, 62 to 51, the next night of the tourney. Elgin, the number one team in the state, defeated Leyden, 53 to 40. The next weekend, they lost to Bloom, but defeated Lockport. Thornton defeated the Eagles, but things looked brighter when Coach George Cox's boys ran over Kankakee, Fractional, and Blue Island in the second round of League play. Then the Eagles lost a hard one. 57 to 55, to Bloom. They defeated Lockport the same weekend in one overtime and a sudden death period. In their final games of the season, the varsity squad was downed by Thornton 59 to 52, and boat Argo 60 to 42. The cagers finished third in the SSL with ten wins and four losses, and had a season's record of 13 wins and 7 losses. For the first time in 19 years the varsity won their Regional Tournament, held at Glenbrook. The Eagles defeated Notre Dame, Palatine, and Niles to get the crown. Leyden was knocked out by Barrington in their first round of the Sectional Tournament, held at Arlington Heights. 99 Left to right: K. Rundquist. Mgr., A. Rendl, B. Allen, S. This was the first time recently that the varsity squad won more meets than it lost. The varsity matmen placed sixth in the South Suburban League tournament with 28 points. Ninty-five pounder Sal Fuscone took second in his weight division, the highest rank obtained by any Leyden team member in this year'3 tournament. In SSL dual meets, Leyden won Bill Bruhn. Junior, one of Leyden's top wrestlers, placed second in the state wrestling meet. three and lost three. Bill Bruhn, 154 pcunder, went farther than any Leyden grappler has gone in recent years, by taking second in his weight at the Stute Tournament held at Champaign. He qualified for the State Tourney by taking first place in the Arlington Heights Sectionals. 120 pounder Ron Vonseh ran up a perfect record of 13 wins for 13 matches in dual-meet competitions. The frosh-soph team, coached by Mr. Charles Farina, did not have the best of seasons, but it started the development of several fine wrestlers. WRESTLING COACHES Left to right: M. Schwartz, C. Audrey Roorda, Advisor A book of memories that students can cherish, a review of school life at Leyden, and a permanent record of the year's events—this is the EAGLE. Any student who is willing to work can be on the EAGLE staff, since all work is done on a voluntary and extra-curricular basis. The students spend many busy hours selecting, sorting, alphabetizing, and identifying numerous pictures. When this is done they write and polish the copy that gives the pictures meaning. In addition they must check the accuracy of spelling on lists of names, and type and retype copy. Next comes the proof reading, and when the yearbook is finally ready, it is time to begin work on the next one. The EAGLE is paid for through the student activity fee, and distributed to each Leyden student. Carole Netzel Editor-in-Chief lanet Urbanow Assistant Editor ) STAFF, left to right: Seated: D. The rose arbor had formed an arch over the path on which the Homecoming Queen would walk. Sighs of released tension and joy were heard when it was announced that Adele Talaga would reign over the 195b Homecoming. She walked through the rose arbor with her escorts, ascended the steps to the stage, and took her place with her court. After being crowned, Adele was serenaded with the traditional ''Only a Rose. The Homecoming spirit was instilled in Lcy-denites when thirty girls were picked from the senior class to compete for the throne. When it was narrowed down to the seven girls who would make up the queen and court, fnany were already busy designing floats. On Friday the floats were displayed in the parade and the best three were picked on the merits of originality and artistry. The festivities really began in full swing on Thursday night, with a talent show, bonfire, and a tennis court dance. At the game Friday night, the queen and her court sat along the 50 yard line and rooted the team to a 14-0 victory over Fractional. The Queen's Ball on Saturday night brought the 1956 Homecoming to an end. The theme of the dance which was sponsored by the National Honor Society was Silhouettes in Silver. The beauty and excitement of the Homecoming will forever linger in the minds and hearts of its participants. SEARCHES FOR HAPPINESS The lights dim and the curtain rises to the all-school play production of Everyman . The meaning of all-school was in this case taken literally, for the whole school including Drama, English and Choral departments worked together to present a different type of entertainment for community and friends. Everyman is the drama of a man called Everyman who, when he was summoned, searched for someone to accompany him on his journey with Death. Disappointed by relatives, riches, and friends, he is finally accompanied by Good Deeds and her sister, Faith. Th© cast played to a full house, and the production was an unqualified success. CHRISTMAS PARTY . . . Includes All Girls Every year Leyden Girls' League, Tri-Hi-Y, and the Girls' Athletic Association hold a Christmas party. Every girl is invited. The price is a gift for a youngster. The gifts are then taken to Cook County Hospital and given to the children there. CHOCOLATE CHAT . . . Combines Learning with Fun Leyden Girls' League sponsors this event every year. Along with the refreshments and fun, the girls this year watched a demonstration of fancy gift wrapping. WASHINGTON TRIP . . . BRINGS ENJOYMENT TO EDUCATION The bags were packed and the round-trip tickets were bought as a group of Leyden's juniors and seniors boarded the train to Washington D. C. The Bureau of Engraving, the White House, and Annapolis were among the list of sight seeing stops toured by the Leyden group. Washington holds memories, pleasant and happy ones, for those who boarded the Pullman that April noon. WASHINGTON MONUMENT IWO JIMA MONUMENT LINCOLN MEMORIAL WHITE HOUSE HOMECOMING DANCE HOMECOMING DANCE Among the social activities the Leyden student participates in are the school dances, both formal and informal. School organizations sponsor these dances to raise funds for various purposes. Highlighting the socials this year were the National Honor Society—sponsored Homecoming, the Winter Wonderland, and the Junior-Senior Prom. These probably remained the most memorable in the students' minds. DANCES . . . ENTERTAINING EVENTS WINTER WONDERLAND JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM . . . ENDS SOCIAL WHIRL Starry-eyed couples glided gracefully over the floor of Tam O'Shanter’s Country Club at the 1957 Junior-Senior Prom. Enchanting melodies from the orchestra of Lou Breese created a serene atmosphere which lent harmony to the Prom's theme, Moonglow . A king and queen were crowned at the prom on May 7.4, and the Grand March brought the evening to a close. When the Prom was over, the juniors were proud of their efforts and labor. The seniors will always remember the beautiful memories of their last high-school prom. GRADUATION «■ ! Am iiffi £i!9 . . CONCLUDES THE SCHOOL YEAR At last the awaited day arrived—Graduation Day, the event which the seniors have looked forward to for four years. N°w that the seniors are leaving, they will be encountering a life filled with both successes and disappointments. They are now ready for further development in their chosen fields since through study and hard work at Leyden, they have a foundation in their preparation for the future. WILL YOU REMEMBER? Across a brightly lit field a cheer sounds through crisp October air . . . A crown is placed on the head of a smiling girl carrying red roses . . . Pom poms fly as a ball arches from the hands of a tall player in white and sinks through the net. . . Soft music echoes from the magic enchantment of the Prom . . . FOR THIS IS LEYDEN A last minute dash to make the A bus . . . the quick roar of a jet heading for O'Hare . . . the rush to the cafeteria for lunch ... a chance meeting with a friend between classes . . . the special sound of the 3:28 bell . . . the familiar sight of a Social or Core or English class . . . the clang of lockers after school. YOU CANT FORGET A picture, a sound, a smile, a song—and these for a lifetime will bring memories of this year at Leyden Community High. WE THANK YOU A yearbook is produced through the efforts of many people and the Eagle is no exception. We, therefore, take this opportunity to thank the behind fhe scenes people. We could not have possibly completed this record without the combined efforts of the publisher, photographer, and the school. The Board of Education, the faculty, and the administration have helped not only with their willing co-operation but also financially. Norman Koenig and the Norman King Company have given us valuable help in layout and design for which the Leyden student can be proud. Last but not least, Root Studios, especially John Roche and Lenny Novak, have given much time in giving us excellent photography. Without these people, our yearbook would have been an impossible task. Thank you. I
