This is LEYDEN Community High School Where we develop the . . . Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow Page 3 We develop our talents for life in an unsurpassed community The ''Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow develops his talents and prepares to meet the challenge of life in an unsurpassed community. Whether his desires be academic, homemaking, vocational, or leisure, or all four, our school provides an opportunity to develop this well rounded citizen. The academic is developed through classes in English, foreign languages, science, and mathematics. Sewing, cooking, family living and many other classes help develop the Leyden citizen as a homemaker. The vocational aspect of the Leyden citizen is developed through industrial arts and business courses. Physical education, art, music and drama all help to develop the Leyden citizen into an adult who can make worthy use of his leisure time. The faculty, classes, athletics, activities and events all contribute their share in developing the Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow. Puje 4 OUR COMMUNITY SENDS STUDENTS FROM ALL CORNERS OF A LARGE DISTRICT The Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow is an ever increasing group, growing in numbers with each passing year. There are 2022 of us today in a high school built for approximately 2700 inhabitants. Next year we will number 2500, then 3,000, and so on up the scale. Our school today can develop the Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow, but what about the Leyden citizen of the Day-After-Tomorrow? Page 6 lon f i7 Citizens Come From... DEDICATION The Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow is the end result of many factors. He himself, his parents, his friends, and all the other things that go into making up his own particular environmental pattern and individual heritage. The school plays an important part in developing this individual into a worthwhile member of the community. Leyden is interested in developing a well rounded citizen that will fit into the particular segment of the community in which he will best succeed. Curricular and extra curricular activities help to mold the Leyden student. The student body, the faculty, and the administration all contribute their share towards developing this citizen. But, as in all things, chaos exists without proper direction. This direction, which makes possible the type of educational program depicted in this book, comes from the Board of Eduction. Seven individuals, at present, six men and a woman, all duly elected by the adult citizenry of the community, form the Leyden Board of Education. Under their guidance and influence the Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow becomes a reality. It is to these seven that we. the staff of the 1956 EAGLE, and the student body of Leyden Community High School, respectfully dedicate this, our record of the year's activities, the 1956 EAGLE. . . . Each learning how to become better citizens of tomorrow. For the seniors, their high school education wa3 finished, and they soon would be able to apply what they had learned to practical living. The underclassmen, however, v ere still striving toward attaining their goal through curricular and extracurricular activities In the net to distant future they too will be the Leyden Citizens of Tomorrow . Vonesh FOUR YEARS OF MEMORIES Members of the Class of '56 have had an elaborate high school career . . . elaborate in event and achievement, but most important, in growing up. School started a little late in our freshman year because of the necessity of completing the new wing. Leyden was just coming out of its doubleshift days, and we were just coming into Leyden. Remember the vows we made when the upperclassmen made us carry trays and push pennies. Our feelings were soothed by the heaps of watermelon at the Freshman Mixer, and we began to feel more at home in u school that offered wonderful football games, traditional Homecoming, and an awe-inspiring Christmas Pageant. Our officers that year were: Jim Baron, president; Mary Lynn Trossen, vice president; Sylvia Sima, secretary; and Laurel Brandt, treasurer. Will you ever forget the deep feeling of pride you felt after winning a football game. That's the way we felt after we conquered our freshman year. By the Sophomore year we were becoming more a part of Leyden, and Leyden was becoming more a part of us. Another new addition was being built for a rapidly growing student body. There were more football and basketball games, and we made more friends than we could ever send Christmas cards to. As the end of the year approached we felt sorry because being a Sophomore was so much fun. Came the Junior year, and along with our class rings, we received a new outlook on life. Ask any member of our '55 junior class for his definition of the Prom, and he'll probably say the result of our money. Money, money, money. Sell a coke, have a dance, but raise money for that Prom. Sell and seek and seek we did. Under the direction of the officers: Jim Baron, president; Joyce Jones, vice president; JoAnne Larson, secretary; and Sally Pagen, treas urer, and sponsors Mrs. Jean Paris and Mr. Lou Granzin, we had a fine Turnabout, sold refreshments at basketball games and helped the advisory council out from under its pile of Prom preparation work. Suddenly we decided to take five so off to Washington we went to paint the town Red, White, and Blue. Back to work. Time flew and before we knew it Stardust Serenade at Medinah was down in history as the best of the best Proms Dreamy, daffy, a wow; our Junior year was really tops. As the seniors go, so goes I.eyden. Wo, as seniors, went for the top. We wanted to make our school the best, and we did. President Tony Durante, secretary Janet Boyer, and treasurer Pat Ryan, with the backing of the advisory homeroom made Leyden look good by publishing football and basketball programs and pushing school spirit. The year went fast and it wasn't long until we were all wishing it wasn't time for our big dance, the March Merry-go-round. That passed all too quickly, and soon we were planning Class Day and being measured for caps and gowns. Remember the look of mixed emotions on the faces of our classmates as we went through the last days of school trying to hold onto the warmth of the glowing embers of our high school days? Four years—a twenty-fifth of a century—in comparison with the age of the earth, nothing—four years—teen-age years -in comparison with the age of the members of Leyden '56, a complete history of young adults. Corchran, co-sponsor; A. Tornabene, vice president; Mrs. A. Ross, co-sponsor; R. Bielick. president; K Hammargren, secretary; B Saari, treasurer. The Junior class is laced each year with the problem of sponsoring the Junior-Senior Prom. Class officers, the advisory council, and the entire junior student body get into the swing of things and yearly produce a Prom that 1-eyden reflects on with pride. This year, as in the past, the juniors have been responsible for the annual Turnabout, the all school play, and selling concessions at basketball games. Cooperation was the key-note contributing to the success of the Junior class in 1956. ADVISORY COUNCIL left to right Row 1: P Powell, B Schultz. C. Netzel, N. Neuzil, J. Ratti. C. Bennett Row 2 A. When Coach England arrived on the Leyden scene in the fall of 1938, the Eagle sports program consisted of football, basketball, baseball, track, and tennis. The new arrival from the Ozarks took over the helm of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. During these eighteen years the Leyden sports offerings have doubled. Cross country, wrestling, gymnastics, swimming, and golf have been added to Leyden's It's Athletic.” The coaching staff has grown from three members in 1938 to seventeen today. Leyden has become a great sports school under Sam England's leadership, and it will remain one as long as Coach England is at the helm. SAM ENGLAND Athletic Director ... THE LEYDEN SPORTS SCENE . . . FOOTBALL COACHES Coach George Bujan completed his ninth year as Eagle varsity mentor as he directed the football team to their best season since 1950 George Cox former sophomore coach, took over the duties of varsity assistant. Coach Bill Corchran, assisted by newcomer Richard Perry, lead the Irosh-soph squad John Farncy served his second year at the helm of the junior varsity. John Flanigan took over the assistant JV duties this year. W. Corchran, R. Perry, J. Flanigan, J Farney. Standing: G. Bujan FOOTBALL Football opened this year, as it has for many seasons, on the first of September. Nine coaches met over one hundred and fifty candidates for positions on the four teams—varsity, junior varsity, frosh-soph, and freshman. Our hopes were high as we looked forward to the season opener with our traditional foe Arlington Heights. This year's varsity had been the undefeated SSL champs as sophomores, and we felt that this just might be our year. The frosh-soph squad would be made up of members of last year's freshman team which lost only one of eight. This could really be our year. Just think—what if both teams went through the season undefeated? We sure were going to enjoy our Friday nights this year. Both teams got by Arlington; it was a battle, but they both made it. It is more than a hundred miles out to Freeport, but we still had high hopes of coming through the season undefeated. The sophs made it past Freeport, but the big boys tasted defeat—and by the rather funny sounding score of 10 to 6. The season progressed from here on with its ups and downs. One of the biggest ups, as has been the case for the past twenty years, was Homecoming. Argo was our football opponent, but football isn't the only thing we remember. We crowned a queen, selected a winning float from over twenty entries, and attended the traditional Homecoming dance. The Eagle gridmen made the celebration a complete success for us, too, as they captured their first Homecoming win in four years with a 20 to 6 rout over the Argonauts. The sophs won too, incidentally. There were more ups and downs before the year was over—the Blue Island loss in the rain was certainly a down, and the last second win over Bloom in the season finale was certainly an up—but all in all we sure don't have any complaints about the 1955 football season. Leyden's four football teams won twenty-five and lost only ten against some of the best competition in the state. The varsity had their best season since 1950 and their best SSL record in history. The junior varsity, the frosh-soph, and the freshman teams all had winning years This was truly one of Leyden's great football seasons. Page 87 Left to right: Bottom row: J. Schiferl. mgr., B. VARSITY FOOTBALL The varsity Eagles finished the season with live wins, three losses, and one tie—their best year since 1950. Coach George Bujan s gridmen also had their best SSL season as they captured three victories against two losses and one tie. Coach George Cox moved up from the sophomore team to assist Coach Bujan this year. Five Eagles found positions on the All SSL team at the close of the season. High points of the season were the Homecoming win over Argo and the last second touchdown that brought victory over arch rival Bloom in the year's finale. Guided by varsity mentor George Cox, IV coach Cal Simon, frosh-soph coach Lou Granzin, and freshmen coach Joe Thomas, the combined Eagle teams completed another successful season. All four teams finished the year with winning records. Coach Granzin topped the year by winning his fourth SSL crown—third straight. L ft to right: Bottom row: L. Granzin, G. Cox Top row: C. Simon. J. Thomas BASKETBALL Even before the football team had played its final game of the year the roundball enthusiasts were on the hardwood preparing for the 1955-56 season. As in football, we were looking forward to another successful year. This year, we thought, might be our real big one. After all the seniors had split the SSL title with Kankakee as sophomores, and the juniors had won the title outright last year. How could we miss? Things started off with a bang as we ran up 32 points in the final quarter of our opener to rout Niles. One of the local merchants advertised free milk shakes for all Leyden students if all four basketball teams—varsity, junior varsity, frosh-soph, and freshmen—defeated Niles on opening day. The basketball didn't let us down—we all had our free shakes. Our great season got rather mixed up the next 2 times out, but we put up a good fight against Kankakee, and we weren't too unhappy. Five victories followed—we set a school record with 92 points against Maple Park in the opener of the DeKalb Tourney—before we tasted defeat at the hands of Sycamore in our second DeKalb outing. After the dismal Blue Island loss, we hit the high spot of our season with wins over state rated Elgin and previously undefeated Bloom. The season went up and down after this before Oak Park put an end to the year with their 83 to 73 win in the second game of the regional. Even if our basketmen didn't live up to their advance billing they were a record club. They broke practically every Leyden record on the books. Their 1571 points scored during the season is a record; their 68.3 per game average is a record; and, as previously mentioned, their 92 points against Maple Park is a record. Tony Durante set a new Leyden individual game record and a new fieldhouse record with 31 points against Lockport. Three Eagle regulars hit better than forty per cent of their shots from the floor during the season only one player in Leyden history had done that well previously. Naturally, then, their .395 team shooting percentage on field goals is a record. This was truly a record team. Incidentally, the frosh-soph team didn't let Leyden down. They won their third straight SSL title. Both the junior varsity and freshmen netters had successful years. Combined, the Leyden cagemen won fifty-two and lost only twenty-two in one of the toughest leagues in the state. Page 92 Leit to right: Bottom row: R Gates, C. Christensen, D. Cristante, I. VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach George Cox's varsity closed out the 1955-56 season with a record of fifteen wins and eight losses. They won nine and lost five in SSL action. High points of the season were wins over Elgin, Bloom, and Thornton. Their comeback victory over Niles in the first game of the state regional was undoubtedly one of their finest performances. Nine seniors and three juniors were responsible for the Eagle's success. BASKETBALL SCHEDULE VARSITY STATISTICS Leyden 71 Niles 57 G FGA FGM PCT FT A FTM PCT PF TP AVE Leyden 48 Rock Island 65 T. The varsity cinder crew was undefeated during the indoor season and won their first three dual meets outdoors. However, the individual star necessary to score in top flight relay-league-meet competition was still missing from the Leyden lineup. Captain Alan Bethell, Tony Durante, Jim Baron, and Bob Ulrich, four of Leyden's all-time track stars, completed their running days for the Eagles this year. They are in charge of the election of the Queen, Court, and Rose Arbor, the presentation of the talent show and pep rally, the Homecoming ceremonies and decorations, and the floats and parade. Months of planning and preparation are needed to carry out these things, but the end result is one always to be remembered by the Leyden students. Records The Year What is involved in putting out a yearbook? inquired a curious student. Well, sighed the weary editor, not much — just the planning and scheduling of numerous pictures, after which you must select, sort, alphabetize, and identify them. Then, too, you can't forget the written copy that gives these pictures meaning. This requires gathering the information, then writing, editing, and typing it. When you have both the pictures and the copy completed you lay out the page-dummies and give it to your publisher on a prescribed deadline. Is that all? questioned the student. “No, the editor replied, then you begin all over again, attempting to meet your next deadline. The EAGLE is Leyden's permanent record of the year's events. The EAGLE is paid for through the student activity fee and distributed to each Leyden citizen. EDITORS, left to right: P Schultz, Co-Underclass Section Editor; N. Ruhnke, Business Manager; B. Never To Be Forgotten A still, but exuberating silence tills the stands lining Dodge Field, as these words are heard, Presenting Leyden's 1955 Homecoming Queen, Miss Mary Lou McDaniels.” The applause becomes a roaring din, and many of the seniors remember other homecomings and other queens, but this one will be the one most cherished among their memories. Of course the excitement and suspense of Homecoming started long ago when thirty girls from the senior class were elected to compete for positions on the court. The suspense became stronger as the seven for the court were chosen. The festivities for Homecoming started on Thursday when the talent show, bonfire and tennis court dance added to the excitement. All day Friday the students applied their imagination, artistic abilities, and plain hard work, building floats to be used in the parade later that afternoon. This building of suspense and excitment came to a climax when all the students were seated in the stands, and the princesses started through the Rose Arbor. One by one they filed toward the platform, and at last . . . the queen. After the coronation ceremonies' the parade began, the floats with their beauty and comedy, the band with its shining instruments, and, of course, the queen with her court and escorts. Friday night was the big football game. In the place of honor, at the 50 yard line, sat the queen and her court, rooting their team on to a 20-6 victory over Argo. The festivities came to a close on Saturday night with the Queen's Ball, held in the girls gymnasium. This year's dance, sponsored by National Honor Society, was entitled Plantation Cottilion. The room grew brighter gradually az a procession bearing candles entered. There was an air of silence throughout the room as the Birth of Christ was portrayed. Thus began the presentation of the seventeenth annual Christmas Pageant at Leyden Community High School The traditional pageant is brought to Leyden each year through the combined efforts of the Drama and Choral departments. As always, these departments are to be commended on a job well done. CAST OF CHARACTERS READER Bertrand J. This performance was sponsored by the Parents' Club, THE INCIDENT Court Room Drama Backstage was a beehive of activity for this year's all-school play The Incident sponsored by the Girls' League. Makeup crews, lighting and scenery committees, and, of course, the actors spent many hours rehearsing, planning, painting, and just plain working to present a good show. Page 14C CAPITAL SIGHTSEERS On Washington Trip On Wednesday, March 28, ninety of Leyden's juniors and seniors left for one of the most unforgettable events in their lives, the Washington Trip. Upon arrival in Washington the group visited the Bureau of Engraving, the White House, and Annapolis, then bearded the steamer District of Columbia for the trip to Norfolk, Virginia. The balance of the trip was spent visiting such places as the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Supreme Court Building, and the Capitol. DANCES . . . Provide Social Entertainment Dances highlight the social activities of the Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow. All during the year various organizations sponsor different types of dances ranging from the small record dance on to more formal ones. This year, as in the past, the Junior Class sponsored the Turnabout and the Junior-Senior Prom. New on the scene, however, was the Senior March Merry-go-round. Some other dances were the Lovers Leap, the Kings Prance, and the Jitter Bounce. JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM Evening of Enchantment The Oak Park Club was the scene of the 1956 Junior-Senior Prom. Couples danced through the evening to the enchanting strains of Dan Belloc's orchestra. The climax of the evening came with the crowning of the King and Queen followed by :he Grand-March. Congratulations to the Juniors for presenting a wonderful Evening of Enchantment. GRADUATION CEREMONIES As graduation draws near the class of 1956 will think of the wonderful times they have had during the past four years. After graduation day these same students will enter many different walks of life but memories of their high school days will never fade away. Leyden; it's vocational, it's academic, it's leisure, and it's homemaking; has prepared these seniors to be the Leyden Citizen of Tomorrow. WE ACKNOWLEDGE This yearbook was produced through the efforts and contributions of many people, and we, the staff of the 1956 EAGLE, would like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation by acknowledging their services. Co-operation was the key which allowed us to produce this record of the year's activities. Without the co-operation of our school, our photographer, and our publisher, the 1956 EAGLE would not have been completed. The faculty, the administration, and the Board of Education have made the book possible by their contributions of both time and money. Root Photographers, and especially John Roche and Lenny Novak, through their unlimited service and high quality photography have made the 1956 EAGLE a book of which we are justly proud. The Norman King Company and Norman Koenig, our publisher, have supplied us with an unending flow of ideas. Their many hours spent assisting us with layout and design have put the finishing touches on the 1956 EAGLE. Without the services of these, our friends, our job would have been impossible. These, Our Friends LEYDEN COMM. HIGH SCHOOL
