Now that the last game of the 1950 football season is past, but not forgotten, Leyden's strong eleven have chalked up a very good record for themselves. By beating the unpredictable Arlington Heights team 33 to 12 in snowy weather the season ended very successfully with 5 wins, 2 ties, and 1 loss. Ten returning starters from the 349 season, and a few juniors and sophomores made up the '50 team. Setting Downers Grove on their heels in the final 30 seconds 21-20 proved to be the most exciting game of the year. Maynard Slicker returning the La Grange opening kickoff for a first period score was just as thrilling. jan Smid received a berth on the All-State team chosen by the N efws-Gazette of Champagne, Illinois. The S1111-Times of Chicago chose Leyden for honorable mention in their poll of the Chicago area schools. Chuck Quaranta, Sam Mascia, john Lange, Tom Gore, and john Rende added the extra spark to make Leyden's 1950 team some- thing to be proud of. 36 .4 ' ' 1' 1 , My my 5. QM- 2? Q55-Y TOP ROVV: R. After a sluggish start, the Varsity Basketball team rallyed and ended the 1950-51 season with 12 wins and 10 losses. The first two losses were handed out by York, 38-35, and Elgin, 59-48. The next game was played at Leyden against Palatine with the Eagles easily topping them by a score of 51-44. Centered around Sam Xlascia, joe Uvelli, Bob Sorenson, and Dan Plier, the squad under the expert handling of Coach Cox came through with a winning spark. This spark was fanned into a flame during the York Regional when Leyden beat St. Poupulis, 50-40, and edged out Proviso in the second game, 48-35. ln the third and final game the Eagles lost a heartbreaker to Oak Park, 48-45. dl THE UP A D CO 386: SOPH B-XSIxI TBXLI FIRST ROXX R Nllro D Nona I Plraxno Ugrs SECOND ROW R Ix15s ,I Iaturno XX adsxxorth D Rexnolds R Rubmo C FI1LIx B Bradley THIRD ROW C Saluferl B Phxlllps j Herman L Hex D Proper C Rxbcrg Ix Wm berg J GflCl1IxC Coach Gralm . : , , I' I VVVV ka '3 yw ' I , f Y - QW ' , f . The team should develop rapidly this year and by the end of the season Coach Dale St. john expects a good team. Included in the squad are some of Leyden's most outstanding Frosh-Soph trackmen. Several of the boys who hold school records are: Tom Schiferl, high and low hurdles, jim Laturno, pole vault, in the 440 yard relay team are Ronald Kiss, Bob Bradley, jim Murow- ski, and jim Laturno, Returning major letter winners from last year to form the nucleus of this year's team are Captain Bob Ahrens, Bob Bradley, Al Drennan, Ronald Larson, jim Laturno, john Ruzecki, Tom Schiferl and Glen Smith. The minor letter winners on which Coach St. john relies are: Ronald Kiss, Dick Reynolds, jim Murowski, George Durante, Chuck Bergmann, Howard VVilkinson, jack Greinke, Ken Spoo, Dave Proper, and Dan Kuczon. If the boys shape up as expected, the prospects for next year are excellent. Bob Ahrens, and Glen Smith are going to be the lettermen lost next year. Blue streamers, pink apple blos- soms, a huge silvery, xvinking moon plus a host of twinkling stars trimmed the gym, setting the theme of Blue Moon. The music of johnny Esp0sit0's Esquires gave the finishing touches to this enchanting night. Highlighting the festivities was the crowning of Queen Betty Summers and King Tom Schifferl.
