LEYDEN EYE 1 9 42 WAR • ISSUE Published by LEYDEN COMMUNITY HIGH FRANKLIN PARK, ILLINOIS Introduction C 7 HOUGHT expands our horizon! With our plans formu-J lated for a bigger, fuller annual to keep stride with our numerical and material growth, we were the first to sense the implications of war, curtailment and restriction. Our mental growth made us realize the advisability of abridging the annual, nevertheless, we felt that there should be some record of this school year in which there has been so much growth in both our building and curriculum. So the Leyden annual staff adjusted itself to war, giving you a war issue. The Older Girls’ Council, also conscious of its duty, has sold war stamps and bonds with very good results. Leyden is aware and proud of its role in this war, of its many former students now in the Armed Forces, its defense training course for those at home, its financial aid through regular saving and its inspirational encouragement through civic co-operation and leadership. GROWING PAINS The fall of 1941 was not just like any other year.” The construction of the new building and the running out to the portable livened our school life. But our school changed not only in outward appearance, by the addition of our new building, but also our entire school life developed. Our student council got off to a record year with a very successful homecoming. A few weeks later a student and faculty committee drew up a new schedule enabling us to get out of school half an hour earlier. A Hi-Y club was formed by boys of the upper classes. Furthermore, our whole club program was expanded to give the students a chance to enjoy their avocations. Leyden had reason to be proud when its Quiz Kids” made such an admirable radio performance. The senior play, Growing Pains,” was a memorable occasion, and of course we can’t forget the crowning social event of the year, the junior-senior prom. Page 3 FACULTY BOTTS, JOSEPH T., B.S.. Shall we run over the year and review some of the more important ones? September — ORGANIZING month — homerooms name chairman; class officers elected; the student and older girls councils get their representatives; and we settle down to the necessity of going out to the portables and church. In October we had several FIRSTS. We read our first printed Leydenite; we saw our first night football game at Crystal Lake; and our first parties got under way. The November event was HOMECOMING. Everyone took part; the student council planned the whole program; the older girls council sold Leyden pennants; the whole student body helped in the parade and cheered the team on to victory; the team won; the honor society sponsored an alumni dance. December provided us with DRAMATICS. The junior play, Charley’s Aunt,” was a riotous success; and the second annual Christmas pageant proved more inspiring than the first. In January we moved into the NEW BUILDING, thereby doing away with the necessity of going to the portable and church. In February we all turned over a new leaf at the beginning of the second SEMESTER. In March we all enjoyed the annual BAND CONCERT. April brought us OPEN HOUSE which was attended by over a thousand people of the surrounding communities. In May we had a varied assortment of events. First came the senior play, Growing Pains,” followed by the junior-senior PROM and the music festival out of doors. On June eleventh— GRADUATION and close of school. We hope that this brief resume has brought to memory some of the main events of the year. We regret that the world crisis prevents us from having a photographic record, but a more informal glimpse of Leyden may be seen in the senior scrap bjbk on file in the new library.
