FOREWORD Progress is, and always has been, the trend of the world. It is with this thought that we, the class of nineteen hundred and thirty-eight, submit this the tenth edition of the Leydenite Annual. It is our sincere wish that its various pictures will recall memorable scenes of classes, extra curricular activities, and social functions of the foregoing school term. We hope that the recollections afforded by this issue will tend to be cherished by you for many years. In fact, our primary aim in the production of this Leydenite Annual has been to present a book that would keep forever vivid the memory, the spirit, and inspiration of Leyden Community High School. DEDICATION The seed of progress embedded in Leyden Community High School in 1924, triumphantly awakened, after four dormant years, and issued its first green blade in 1928 when the first edition of the Leydenite Annual was published. Nourished continually with the thirst for knowledge, our budding plant grew steadily and has annually displayed its proud, lovely blossoms through musical recognition, athletic commendation and scholastic achievement. And now, after a decade of progress, our sturdy specimen yields fertile seed for future accomplishments and improvements. We are grateful, indeed, for the help, encouragement, and steady guidance of Miss Miller and Mr. Steel, our sponsors, who have faithfully aided us in backing progress during the past four years. Therefore, in appreciation of their efforts, and in the name of progress and all embodied in it, we, the class of nineteen hundred and thirty-eight, dedicate this tenth edition of the Leydenite.

THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MRS. ADA J. DODGE President JOSEPH P. DIDIER Secretary FRANK W. CASE W. F. C. MUELLER E. A. MUDGETT GEORGE V. DEAL Principal A MESSAGE FROM MR. DEAL True progress is measured in the lives of students that live in enlightened surroundings and partake of invigorating ideas and ideals. This progress is not measured by comparing yourself with others but by a realization within yourself that you are doing better today than yesterday. Thus, progress is possible in each one of us and life becomes a glorious challenge. 4
