BAND The band was organized 8 years ago, consisting of 16 members with Mr. Stark, director, and Mr. Krueger, assistant director. Mr. Krueger received his appointment four years ago because the ever-increas ing development of the music department necessitated such action. At the present time, the band is composed of 95 members. During the 1937-38 school term, this group was separated into symphony and military bands the former with 60 players and the latter 35. Many fine contest records have been chalked up by the bond. DANCE BAND Two years ago, Mr. Krueger organized a dance band for the express purpose of aiding the band members. The band, proving a success, was made permanent. At its birth the band had twenty members; recently it was divided into a first and second band with ten players each. Besides playing at many successful social events at school, the dance band has had numerous outside engagements. With its earnings, uniforms and a well-equipped microphone system were purchased. ❖ 17

ATHLETICS Leyden was represented in athletic competition this year by the football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and track squads. Coach Watson's varsity football squad, hard hit by injuries and lack of able substitutes, finished with two victories and three defeats in conference play, as opposed to two previous years of conference championship. Coach Moser had a very promising group of freshmen and sophomores out for the second team. A record of nine conference victories and two losses was the result of a highly successful season played by a veteran quintet under Coach Watson's direction. The squad made the longest trip in quite a few years when they went down to central Illinois to play Cropsey, whose team come up here to end Leyden's home season. ♦SI- 'S • 18
