THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MRS. ADA J. DODGE President JOSEPH P. DIDIER Secretary FRANK W. CASE W. F. C. MUELLER E. A. MUDGETT GEORGE V. DEAL Principal A MESSAGE FROM MR. DEAL True progress is measured in the lives of students that live in enlightened surroundings and partake of invigorating ideas and ideals. This progress is not measured by comparing yourself with others but by a realization within yourself that you are doing better today than yesterday. Thus, progress is possible in each one of us and life becomes a glorious challenge. 4

HACKETT HISTORY OF LEYDEN Higher education in Leyden Township had its birth in 1924 when by an act of special legislation high school classes were held in the portables behind the Franklin Park Grammar School. Weren't they a hopelessly struggling lot then with four teachers, seventy-five students, strictly academic courses, and a music teacher who came out from Chicago once or twice a week and instilled in them their first love for music? They were named Leyden after the township of Leyden. Proud they were of their name and its significance, for Leyden was a city in the Netherlands whose renown for zealous works in scholarship, education, and the fine arts was world-wide. In the spring of 1926 the cornerstone for a new modern building was laid, and the following fall teachers and students paraded through the streets of town and moved in glowing with pride. As time passed and more recognition was given to the advantages of the high school, the onrush of eager knowledge seekers soon increased to such an extent that they were forced to construct another building thus the addition of the portables. They were not content with mere scholastic expansion; they desired athletic acclaim. One of the finest athletic fields in the state of Illinois was added to the premises—twenty acres of beauty which were called Dodge Field in memory of Dr. H. E. Dodge, one of the most generous benefactors of the school. Our school has progressed rapidly since 1924. Our four teachers have increased to a faculty of twenty-two. Our enrollment has grown from a mere handful of seventy-five students to the considerable number of 550. Our musical organizations have known state and national renown. Our athletic department has been very active in the Northwest Conference of which it is a member. Therefore, in this, our decennial Leydenite publication, we look back proudly on the achievements and the progress stamped upon our Alma Mater by the March of Time.
