THE 1938 LEYDENITE Leyden Community High School Franklin Park, Illinois DEDICATION The seed of progress embedded in Leyden Community High School in 1924, triumphantly awakened, after four dormant years, and issued its first green blade in 1928 when the first edition of the Leydenite Annual was published. Nourished continually with the thirst for knowledge, our budding plant grew steadily and has annually displayed its proud, lovely blossoms through musical recognition, athletic commendation and scholastic achievement. And now, after a decade of progress, our sturdy specimen yields fertile seed for future accomplishments and improvements. We are grateful, indeed, for the help, encouragement, and steady guidance of Miss Miller and Mr. Steel, our sponsors, who have faithfully aided us in backing progress during the past four years. Therefore, in appreciation of their efforts, and in the name of progress and all embodied in it, we, the class of nineteen hundred and thirty-eight, dedicate this tenth edition of the Leydenite. FOREWORD Progress is, and always has been, the trend of the world. It is with this thought that we, the class of nineteen hundred and thirty-eight, submit this the tenth edition of the Leydenite Annual. It is our sincere wish that its various pictures will recall memorable scenes of classes, extra curricular activities, and social functions of the foregoing school term. We hope that the recollections afforded by this issue will tend to be cherished by you for many years. In fact, our primary aim in the production of this Leydenite Annual has been to present a book that would keep forever vivid the memory, the spirit, and inspiration of Leyden Community High School. DEAL True progress is measured in the lives of students that live in enlightened surroundings and partake of invigorating ideas and ideals. This progress is not measured by comparing yourself with others but by a realization within yourself that you are doing better today than yesterday. Thus, progress is possible in each one of us and life becomes a glorious challenge. 4 LEYDENITE BOARD OF CONTROL CO-EDITORS—Marjorie Kaspar, Clyde Kirchhoff, Florence Hackett. ★ LITERARY BOARD—Editor, Marjorie Kaspar. HACKETT HISTORY OF LEYDEN Higher education in Leyden Township had its birth in 1924 when by an act of special legislation high school classes were held in the portables behind the Franklin Park Grammar School. Weren't they a hopelessly struggling lot then with four teachers, seventy-five students, strictly academic courses, and a music teacher who came out from Chicago once or twice a week and instilled in them their first love for music? They were named Leyden after the township of Leyden. Proud they were of their name and its significance, for Leyden was a city in the Netherlands whose renown for zealous works in scholarship, education, and the fine arts was world-wide. In the spring of 1926 the cornerstone for a new modern building was laid, and the following fall teachers and students paraded through the streets of town and moved in glowing with pride. As time passed and more recognition was given to the advantages of the high school, the onrush of eager knowledge seekers soon increased to such an extent that they were forced to construct another building thus the addition of the portables. They were not content with mere scholastic expansion; they desired athletic acclaim. One of the finest athletic fields in the state of Illinois was added to the premises—twenty acres of beauty which were called Dodge Field in memory of Dr. H. E. Dodge, one of the most generous benefactors of the school. Our school has progressed rapidly since 1924. Our four teachers have increased to a faculty of twenty-two. Our enrollment has grown from a mere handful of seventy-five students to the considerable number of 550. Our musical organizations have known state and national renown. Our athletic department has been very active in the Northwest Conference of which it is a member. Therefore, in this, our decennial Leydenite publication, we look back proudly on the achievements and the progress stamped upon our Alma Mater by the March of Time. FACULTY E. Anderson E. Flood F. We had a very large enrollment, approximately twice as many as the graduating class. 1935— This year we were better prepared to combat the pitfalls, and better able to enjoy the pleasures of high school. Clyde Kirchhoff was again chosen as president, and his corps of officers included: Gladys Rasmussen, Mary Ann Reynolds, and Vernon Laufer. The entire school enjoyed the annual Christmas party sponsored by us sophs . 1936— The junior play, Cinderella of Loreland , was presented two nights before full houses, a successful experiment. The proceeds of the play were used for the Junior-Senior prom, a formal garden. The class officers were: Vernon Green, president; Robert Nelson, vice-president; Lorraine Popp, secretary; and Florence Hackett, treasurer. Many of the juniors engaged in extra-curricular activities to round out a perfect year. 1937— We came to the beginning of that last mile. Our senior production Tiger House proved successful to the audience, actors, and director. Most of the varsity teams consisted mainly of seniors. Our officers were: Vernon Green, Robert Nelson, Anne Cullerton. and Florence Hackett. With June 8 came graduation and new worlds to conquer. We hope we will have as much pleasure conquering these new worlds as we had the last! CLASS SPONSORS H. Miller W. Steel V. Green R. Nelson SENIORS RUTH AMLING French Medal. Quill Scroll. G. A. A.. CLASS OF 1939 The distinction of being the leading class in musical activities, and having the largest representation in both the band and orchestra went to the juniors. This class had a good showing in extra-curricular activities: The girls had the largest number in G. A. A., and the boys were also prominent in football and track teams. The class play, ''Skidding, proved a highly successful production, proceeds of which made possible one of the finest proms in the history of the school. Boasting of 72 members in comparison to 15 members 10 years ago. the group, under the direction of Mr. Stark, has so enlarged that now in 1938 the instrumentation meets the requirements of a symphony. In 1935 the orchestra took second place at the state contest; in 1936 the group took first place in both district and state, making them eligible for the national contest in 1937. at which time they ranked in second division. 16 CHOIR The choir, also under the direction of Mr. Stark, is a combination of the girls' and boys' glee clubs. The majority of the group consists of underclassmen and a well-trained group of mixed voices will be in force next year. Although the group have met only once a week, they have done excellent work and have appeared in two home concerts this year. Leyden has always been represented in the all-state chorus and orchestra at Champagne by at least two members from the choir and two representatives from the orchestra. BAND The band was organized 8 years ago, consisting of 16 members with Mr. Stark, director, and Mr. Krueger, assistant director. Mr. Krueger received his appointment four years ago because the ever-increas ing development of the music department necessitated such action. At the present time, the band is composed of 95 members. During the 1937-38 school term, this group was separated into symphony and military bands the former with 60 players and the latter 35. Many fine contest records have been chalked up by the bond. DANCE BAND Two years ago, Mr. Krueger organized a dance band for the express purpose of aiding the band members. The band, proving a success, was made permanent. At its birth the band had twenty members; recently it was divided into a first and second band with ten players each. Besides playing at many successful social events at school, the dance band has had numerous outside engagements. With its earnings, uniforms and a well-equipped microphone system were purchased. ❖ 17 ATHLETICS Leyden was represented in athletic competition this year by the football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and track squads. Coach Watson's varsity football squad, hard hit by injuries and lack of able substitutes, finished with two victories and three defeats in conference play, as opposed to two previous years of conference championship. Coach Moser had a very promising group of freshmen and sophomores out for the second team. A record of nine conference victories and two losses was the result of a highly successful season played by a veteran quintet under Coach Watson's direction. The squad made the longest trip in quite a few years when they went down to central Illinois to play Cropsey, whose team come up here to end Leyden's home season. ♦SI- 'S • 18 ATHLETICS Mr. Steel's lightweights played brilliant basketball and took the conference championship with ten victories and one defeat. The baseball team played six conference games and non-conference games, including West Chicago, Oak Park, and Waukegan. Mr. Hackett's varsity track squad was a well balanced outfit, particularly strong in the dashes and middle distance events. The tennis squad, under the direction of Mr. Moser, had some interesting matches lined up with Oak Park, Palatine, Bensenville, and other schools in Leyden's district. The Girls' Athletic Association also entered the field of intra-mural sports, which was composed of archery, soccer, basketball, baseball, volley ball, and tennis. Miss Strand and Miss Roseland proved to be capable supervisors both in G. A. A. business and sport activities. A G. A. A. tea, party and tumbling show were important events of the season. 19 dramatics The two dramatic highlights of the year were seen in the class plays. Skidding, a three-act comedy (top row) was presented by the juniors, and Tiger House, a three-act mystery comedy, by the seniors. Eoth plays were under the direction of Miss Emma LaPorie. Under the supervision of Miss LaPorte and Miss Maloney, the Dramatic Club has accomplished much in its field the past year. Included in its program were several one-act plays, produced by student directors, monologues in dialect, demonstrations, and interesting talks given by its members and supervisors. The club was ably headed by H. Barry, president; C. kirchhoff, vice-president; and A. Cullerton, secretary-treasurer. 20 CLUBS Many were the achievements of the Student Council under the direction of Mr. Moser. These students, as Class Officers, led their respective classes on to success. Weekly issues of the school paper were a result of the Leydenite Staff's work and Miss Robertson, presiding faculty member. This Annual's production was due partly to the ability of the Annual Staff. A successful year was had by the Debate Club. Miss Murphy arranged for two radio broadcasts and inter-scholastic contests also. The Quill and Scroll is an International Society for High School Journalists. Students of special journalistic achievements are members of this organization. • 21 LIFE AT To familiarize the readers with the everyday scholastic life at Leyden these pictures take you into the school and into the classroom. The scenes above are typical of the 98 classes conducted daily by the 22 members of the faculty. Above is one American LEYDEN History class which did extensive outside reference work. Mrs. Lalor issued excuses to tardy students. The English class shown is representative of a large number of English classes. Other scenes are the cafeteria, shop, and mechanical drawing students and LIFE AT LEYDEN one of the 5 typing classes. Miss Mahler found great convenience with the new Ediphone. The geometry class sought the solution with Miss Flood as a guide, and from the corridor is a glimpse of Mr. Meyer's bookkeeping class. The library with several thousand books provides a quiet, popular retreat for students. The cooks of the future put forth their efforts with Miss Lowe's help. The cheer leaders lent a newfound spirit to the student body. There are also the sewing class, the 5 members of the National Band and Orchestra Clinic, and Miss Riehl attending a purchaser in the book store. LEYDEN BOOSTERS FRANKLIN PARK W. B.
