T H E L E Y D E N I T E 19 3 7 7HR ,ime hascome for the gra luatinR class ni !937 to say goodbye. We would like to pay tribute to the faculty of Leyden before we leave because they have taught us how to grow up. They have shown us how to become mature individuals with a sense of responsibility; with open, unprejudiced minds, and with the ability to cope with a variety of situations. During the crowded years we spent at Leyden they have aided our mental development, encouraged our social growth, and directed our emotional stability. They have opened the door to a richer, more enjoyable life. This Leydenite of 1937 has been compiled primarily as a tribute to them, but also a reminder to us to continue our development along the lines which they have shown us. We wish to extend our gratitude to all the Leyden Hoostcrs and others whose cooperation has made possible the publication of the 1937 Levdenite. ) E D I C A T I O N L E Y D E N I T E BOARD OF CONTROL A backward glance over the past four years brings to mind e persons responsible for our success. The success of the iss of 37 would not have been possible but for the support and nscientious advice of our sponsors. To overlook our faults, correct our most radical ideas, and to encourage our ambitions quired patience and hard work. Because our sponsors. Miss lizabeth Flood and Mr. I.eland Meyer, have shown more than cir quota of tact, patience, and understanding, we humbly dedi-te this, the 1037 Leydcnite, to them. September, 1933—YVc, as 138 small hut powerful freshmen, oon choose a leader to represent us in the new whirl of high chool activites. Melvin Steingrabcr with the fiery top-knot was proclaimed president, June Pearson, vice-president, and Lois Schutt, secretary-treasurer. Our life began! December, 1934—No longer as frivolous freshmen but as erene and solidified sophomores under the guidance of Melvin Steingrabcr, Marianne Bade, Bert Kinney, and Mildred Pieli-!er, we presented for the entire school a “grande social—The Vnnual Sophomore Christmas Party. It was a superb success i every way with Good “Ole St. Nick reigning and Mistletoe bringing delight and good fun. • We “sophs came into general notice also, because we proved we were not afraid “to get out and do things' in athletics, especially, and also in civic affairs. May. 1936—Bringing forth one of the best performances of ill times, “The Haunted House, we juniors “swelled in our achievement, as was most natural, to give to the seniors “Paris in the Spring —the Prom !! This was the most glorious and satisfying event of the year. No wonder- our able officers—Mike Esposito, president; Mar-iannne Bade, vice-president; and Evelyn Vavra, secretary-treasurer. September, 1936—Having found Mike Esposito and Evelyn Vavra an able president and secretary last year, we counted the ballots and found that they had again won back their re-s| ective offices. Dave Douglass secured the post of secretary and Virginia Gauron. the station of vice-president. June. 1937—Now our four years of high school life are gone, and we are going into our familiar auditorium to receive last benedictions. We, somehow, are just a little bit bewildered and chilled as we march stately up the path to the setting of our graduation. Many thoughts rush through our minds in confus-sion as we take our chairs, and then—Commencement!! We said in our freshman year that Life was beginning We know now by the experience of our four years that it’s hardships and ironies, as well as its pleasure and joys, are just coming into a long and endless view for us to smile and attempt to overcome them, or to wail and let them overcome us. What shall it be? Father Time will answer. ( ANDERSON, MILDRED Art Club, Archery. Annual Staff. BACLE. MARIANNE Salutatorian. All-State Chorus ’37. Dramatic Club Officer 36 '37. Chorus Officer ’37. As a result, they became prominent in all the extra curricular activities; especially with 50 in athletics. 70 in hand, orchestra, and choir, and the operetta characters were juniors almost entirely. This class has the reputation of having many steady honor roll students. Naturally, such an aggressive class THE CLASS OF 1939 The Sophomore class began the year with these officers: Tullio Carnesciali, president; ivian Stoner, vice-president. Jeanette Kaehler, secretary: and Martin Levin, treasurer. The girls excelled those of the other three classes in athletics by receiving the most 0. A. A. awards. Hie boys also entered sports, music and clubs enthusiastically. r Twenty-five were in the hand, and twenty-seven were in the orchestra. They sponsored a sophomore party on April the twenty-third; boosted the senior and junior class plays and the o| cr-etta by their presence; and attended the basketball, baseball, football games, and track meets.
