Bork Leyden's basketball team went through their entire conference Schedule with only one defeat. They annexed the Northwest Conference Championship and in doing so they crashed the percentage mark. Leyden's final stand-- ing in the per cent column was 316, which topped the previous mark of .8?3. C a h I l Watson was optimistic oyer his materiu at the start of the seaosn He had Bell Brekke Guillard Rodgers, and Benny from last vears team to pick from The team was yery slow to round lnto form and they los a tough battle to Marne at Des Plaines 16 14 This gam was rust yy hat the team needed to polish off the offens They opened the season on the home floor against Palatine with their coach absent They battled their way to th front and befrt their foe by 18 19 Arlington lost their MARQON AND WHITE TICS lington and humbled the powerful Cardinals , 24-14, Guillard was the individual star for Leyden with seven baskets. Gurnee, Wauconda, and Barrington fell in rapid orrler in the following' tilts. The latter battle was the toughest assignment of the year and Leyden was forced to extend herself all the way to return the winners. On February 233, Warren came to Franklin Park with the idea to erase the sting of our previous victory over them. They' gathered a substantial lead by half time but a determined rally by our Maroons sank them 23-17. Wau- conda was able to offer no opposition and Leyden's second team beat them by 38-12. Leyden and Bensenville battled it out on the following evening before the largest crowd ever yvitnessing a bask- etball argument at the Leyden gym. Our Maroons rushed out in front but Bensenville soon erased this lead and won by 78 Z0 The orange team completely outclassed ou outfit in the third quart 1 which brought them a werl earned triumph fhe Ia Grange District Tournament was the next place of importance Leyden played Hinsdale and met with a drsasterous 21 20 beating, Our Nlaroons were wav orf fornr and at times they looked like a grammer school team This 0217119 ended the careers of three yersatrle bask I pper royy left to rreht Baker pr rncrpal 1 rrlsf n, Rodgers Nlocller Spalding Bork VK rt on Coach Lower royy left to right Coppage Gulllard Bell Brekke llortkf y1c'L first game to Leyden rn the history of the tyyo chools by lo 14 on January 11 -ind the next night they agari trourcecl Palatine for their third conference yrctory a row -Xfter then the team sailed along faultlessly and hum bled all corners Bell was playing great ball on offense wnrle Benny stood like a rnountarn rn front of the foes baskct On February 1 the -Xnnu rl Conference Tournament yy as reeled otl Leyden opened against Palatine and easi beat them by '9 11 On the following afternoon they col lrded yy1 h -Xntroch and lost by 11 'Q Our Maroon Pricres yvere onlv able to sink one free throw in 12 attempts which spelled doom for them Antioch yy ent ahead and mother ed -Xrlmgton for first place by 31 19 Leyden forgot about the tourney and tray eled to Af JUNE 1929 etball player at Le den they are Capt Ball Brekke, anl Gurlla d The e boy haye played ey ery game this year and were largely re pon rble for their team s great suc ces We 'Ire yery sorry to lose their seryuces but with seyen letter men back next year, we should come througn with another title yyrnmng team The sey en ay ailable for 1930 are Carlson Coppage Xl oitkeyyrcz 'Vloeller Rod ger Spalding and Bork In the eason Just past Ieyden compiler' a yery inter stlng stati tical reccrd Tw elye conference games yyerc played and Ley den made 9-lb points yy hrle holding the op positron to only lofi Thls ay erages to Z1 per game yyhrle therr foes could assemble only 13 Bell and Gurllard led the porn' gathers yy hrle Brekke w rs not far behind them Benny play cd defensiyely throughout the season and scor ed only about lo points rn all r . . . . . . - , rr n v . . , . v - ,- - . v . -- 0 C 1. y. . . . . 1 - - L . 1 .
