D .Jn 14 Q5 DIOR class hlS1ZOl2 Open them pearly gates, called the cheerful little cherub who has led the class of '55 along the steep stairways to the long awaited golden gateways. Let's stop off a minute on that top rung and look down over the way we have come. In 1949 our cherub chum opened the doors of ELHS, and we took our place on the first step of the golden stairs. Our first two years in Junior High proved that the class of '55 was off to a good start under the leadership of Dave Mc Caffree. Come on you guys and gals of '55, This is a big jump, echoed the voice of our friend as we entered Senior High School. That year we elected Bob Elliott, Bob Edwards, Mary Hayhoe, and Marilyn .Tones to lead our class. Dave McCaffree and Kay Byers represented us in Student Council. Our cherub had an exciting time at Evening in Paris, our Freshman class party, and also at Fiesta, our all- school party. Our sports-minded chum took a big interest in Ken Slotnick, Arnold Nedelman, Butch Assid, John Schell, Bruce Blakeslee, and John Abbott who re- presented us on the varsity squads. By the way, don't forget our freshman football team which was unde- feated, As the next year whirled around, we climbed higher and, if we looked sharply, we could see the tip of these golden gates. Our ideas and ideals were voiced in Student Council by Bob Elliott, Ann Fee, and Dave McCaffree, Stu Foster, Priscilla Shaver, Nelda Trout, and Peggy Holcomb brought us through a very successful year as our class officers. We all had loads of fun when we chartered a bus to one of the away games, and you can guess where we found our little friend: that's right-- in the bus with four of our girls who made Varsity Cheerleading. He went along with us on the S.S. Lurline, our sopho- more prom, and was found on deck looking ata Harvest Moon which reminded him of our class party earlier that year. That year many of our boys represented us in athletics. Therel See that glitter. Well, that's the pearly gates, exclaimed our cherub chum, and we realized we didn't have much farther to go, Bob Elliott started us off by serving as Veep of Student Council, along with our representatives Judy Green, Dave McCaf- free, Jean McElroy, and Nelda Trout. Our Junior Class President was Bob Edwards and helping him guide our class were Peggy Holcomb, Mary Hayhoe, and Tim Kraft. We understand that Sir Cherub was a great deal of help to Jean McElroy and John Abbott who were co-chairmen of the most tremendous J-Hop, Say- onara. That year we really went to work on projects such as a paper drive and the selling of booster pins. We are sure that all will agree that our little cherub must have had something to do with our successful Junior Play, Cuckoos on the Hearth. Participating enthusiastically in all sports were several Junior boys. Drawing that prosperous year to a close was the annual J unior-Senior Banquet where we found our little friend looking forward to the last big step, our Senior year. Soon summer came to an end and our cherub chum opened the doors of ELHS for our last time UD. We are now Seniors and we find ourselves sitting on the top step of the long, winding staircase. Before we venture out into the world, let us take one last look at our. Senior year. That was a year that shall long be remembered by all. Bob Elliott, Peggy Holcomb, Janet Beaman, and Jean McElroy were the quartet of officers chosen to rim the Student Council. Helping them were Ann Fee, Mary Hayhoe, Nelda Trout, and Stu Foster. Our cherub chum was seen most of the time sitting on the shoulder of Dave Mc Caffree, once again president of his class. Aiding Dave and doing a terrific job were Ben Smith, Jo Cheeseman, and Marilyn Jones. Sports played a big part in the life of every Senior this year. The main social highlight of football season occurred when Sir Cherub danced on the tip of the crowns of our Homecoming King and Queen, Bruce Blakeslee and Suzy Bailey. One of the main goals we were striving for was our Senior trip. This took work and cooperation from all. The magazine sale, held for Juniors and Seniors only, was a big success. We also took part inarumrnage sale and our senior class play, Room for One More, which couldn't have been better. Our goal was finally reached and we climbed aboard the boat for a three day cruise on the Great Lakes with visits to Chicago and Mackinac Island. Even Sir Cherub agreed the trip was a wonderful experience. On June 4, our last big social affair took place with our cherub chum in the midst of all the swirling formals and white dinner jackets at the Senior Prom. Now the time is drawing near when our high school days will be brought to a close. We wish to thank Miss Stophlet and Mr. Pulley for their helpful advice and interest as they guided us along the way toward the accomplishment of our goals. lt is not over yetg we still have theJunior-Senior Banquet, Baccalaureate, and then Commencement. The pearly gates are opening. Come on, Class of '55, echoes Sir Cherub. Yes, our last year is over, and the pearly gates are no longer just a glitter but in full sight. We have made the last leap. As we look down at the flowing staircase we realize that our cherub chum has brought us up the long path through ELHS. This experience has not only given us wonder- ful memories but has helped mold our lives so that in the future We will find a path or make one. IOHN L. SENIOR PLAY ROOM FOR ONE MORE The little, cheerful, cherub chum of the seniors was more than happy on November 19, 1954, when he found there was Room for One More in the pumpkin shell. The pumpkin shell, a small cottage, was the setting for the senior's successful play. Mother, played by Peggy Hangosky, had her hands full with her family of adopted children, but always had time for our chum in between lines. She handled her grief very well when Poppy, portrayed by Greg Seaman, died leaving her with five children. That little cherub sure had a great time with Chic Laughead, who acted as the good-looking older brother, Joey Rose. Joey's main ambition was to become a doctor. His best gal was Peggy Holcomb who played the part of Betty Biddle. She was slightly spoiled by her mother, Mrs, Biddle, played by Nelda Trout. If you listened carefully, you could hear our chum a whistling backstage during the second act when Trot Rose, Arlene Taylor, looking mighty snappy, joined the kids for a swim. Our cherub was most happy when the Roses decided to keep Janie, a shy and hesitant orphan, played by Carol Garner. The whole family was pleased when Janie conquered her fear of water by res- cuing J o Cheeseman, a drowning woman. Especially proud was J anie's best beau, George Biddle, portrayed by Ken Osborn. Teensie Rose, Suzy Bailey, who added great joy to the story, was our little chum's favorite pal as they rollicked through the play together. The day Miss Winston, Social Worker, played by Judy Green, came to the cottage proved to be very eventful. She predicted trouble for the family when they decided to adopt the crippled boy, .Timmy John, Mickey Mickelson. J immy John proved to be a challenge to the Roses and him- self, but was loved by all, He and our cherub friend had great times together especially during rehearsals when our chum rode around on J immy's crutches. A perfect climax came when J immy John learned to walk again, and mother's story of his accomplishment was sold to the movies. When our cheerful, cherub chum rode across on the closing curtain he was well satisfied. The kids had gone to the big harvest dance and mother sat gazing at Poppy's picture. While leaving the play, the tiny voice of you know who beamed from the enormous crowd with the words, From all the seniors and all concerned I would like to say thanks so much to Mr, Warren Richard, Director: Priscilla Shaver, Student Directorg Bob Bunker, Student Producer: Bobbie Ryder, Karen Milligan, Promptersg and to all those whose work on the committees helped make this production such a success. I am sorry, but I must refuse your request. Dave Hull as President, Diane Dennington as Vice- President, Emily Derr as Secretary and Barbara Subar as Treasurer have all done a fine job and are definitely helping the class achieve a good record, The student cotmcil representatives, Vicki Smith, Ed Reuling, Doug Smith and Ann Wood, are also on the upward climb, due to their good work. With the help of their sponsors, Miss Newhouse and Mr.Smith, the students of the Junior Class will be stepping off the last rung of the ladder and through my pearly gates in a year. C Q-3 of 1956 Just take a look at the many successful activi- ties this class held during the year. The HHHU-31 J -Hop, on February 19, was a most enjoyable affair. The Junior Play, Time out for Ginger , on April 29, the paper drive, the big magazine subscription sale, and the chartering of busses to out of town sports events were all on the list of achievements for them. This class ordered and received their class jewelry earlier than any former class. . .that is indicative of their school spirit. And don't forget thelunior- Senior Banquet which climaxed the year's activities. You can easily see, Your Honor the Devil, that according to my record book, you will not be awarded any part of the Junior Class of E.L.H.S. They will finish the climb and step through my pearly gates with no black marks. Yours truly, St. Peter W 'NIO 72? Lynda Anderson . , WN nini A Q 1 A , ' l W Wy Q may A Skip Carl -. They certainly had a successful year. The class of '57 was guided through the year by a well selected group of class officers with John Cowden as Presi- dentg aided by David Seaman, Vice-Presidentg Suz- anne Newman, Secretaryg and Carol Lee Worthington, Treasurer. Barbara Folkers, Todd Reuling and Susan Skarstad were chosen to represent their class on the Student Council. Don't you agree, St. Peter, that they did a tremendous job? The members of the class of '57 polished up their halos for their never-to-be-forgotten Sophomore Prom held in May. The decorations were super. They also had concessions at football and basketball games which were highly successful. The class of '57 sponsored the first hour dance of the football season. Everyone, including the keeper of the Golden Deeds, was there doing the bunny hop. Oh yes, the Sophomore girls introduced a new fad of kilts and knee socks. gg . .1 fm I Not to be outdone by the other classes, the Sopho- mores chartered a bus to the Coldwater football game and proved their class spirit. Seen in the ranks of the Varsity Cheerleaders were Linda Church and Zona Ferris. ln the field of sports the sophomores were very active. The Varsity football team was well aided by Tom Estes, Bill Giltner, Bob McKnight, and Tom Whale, Jim Klewicki was seen in the ranks of the Varsity Basketball team. Through the year, pulling the class toward the high ranks of heaven, were the class sponsors, Miss Thelen, Mr. Stowe, and Mr. Drobac. The class of '57 certainly has come up the staircase this year. Why of course, it's the Freshman class who have just been admitted into the upper- ups to climb the golden staircase. As cherubs this year they have certainly started out in an impressive way under the guidance of their class officers, Ed Estes, Jerry Peters, Mary Peterson and Ron Davis-- President, Veep, Secretary and Treasurer, respec- tively. The Freshmen were well represented in the Student Council by Janet Gibson andJ eff Green. Their class sponsors this year were Mrs. Grim, Mr. Job, and Miss Nelson. The Freshmen certainly have been busy this year with all sorts of class projects. They showed their class spirit by sponsoring two hour dances, a bake sale, a concession at a football game, and a bus to the Coldwater game. l The year was highlighted with their class party, Mood Indigo , in November and their Frosh Prom held in May. St. Peter, don't you think con- gratulations are in order for the F rosh football team? They won all their games. Of course we can't for- get Art Brandstatter who did a FINE job on the Varsity football and basketball teams. I think one reason for their fine class spirit was the freshman cheerleading squad with Janet Gibson, Gail Herndon, Jane McCann, Phyllis Roberts, Betsy Robson, and Missy Williams. A11 in all, the first year in Senior High was very successful for the class of '58. Let's wish the Cherubs luck as they climb the golden stairs toward that day of judgement. rig tw sais ' n V V 'W V V- ,aw 5 V , A., ,Www 5 . are I f ff 0 V ' Z .. ja V f '. John was a very kind and conscientious boy in whatever he said or did. He was born June 3, 1938, and died October 15, 1954 after a long illness. It is with much sorrow that we, his classmates, continue on through life without him. C X, 3 ,- ' , , is ' YI' i Q- C' Q 15- fj T!- 3'- W:-'Q -'T'-'Jn ..... ?-.. - -'I- '-n Q ' if G WTW XL 9 KN, . The seventh grade was under the capable guidance of President, Bob Hannah, Vice-President, Barbara Hayworthg Secretary, Ginny Pryarg and Treasurer, Gunta Kuze. Representing the class in the student council were Duffy Ziegler and Bill Seaman. Xu If S 1 Xl October 30 found the seventh grade at a Hal- loween Party featuring, among many other things, a talent show, all were said to have had a ball , Since the first party was such a success, they de- cided to try their luck again, on December 3, with a Christmas party. This turned out just as well as their first. Last but not least was their marvelous dance on May 20, Sponsoring the class were Mr. McCarron, Mr. Budde, and Mr. Tanzer. I hmwlmulm' 1 4 -1: SW! ,. The Trojans varsity football squad sparkled under the leadership of Vince Carillot who made his debut at E.L.H.S. this season. Mr. Carillot also directed the reserve basketball team to one of its best seasons in recent years. The tennis team is coached by Stan Drobac, former Big Ten singles and doubles champion. He also serves as boys Phys-Ed teacher. The Trojan cage mentor is Gus Ganakas. Mr. Ganakas proved his versatility by coaching the reserve football eleven and the 1954 varsity baseball club. ,Tim Meulendyke heads the track team and is a valuable assistant in football. He also directs the frosh basketball team, Joe DiBello stepped in to take the head reins of the wrestling team this year, He succeeds Pat Sullivan, last year's wrestling coach, who also led the 1954 golf team, alzsut footsall THIRD ROW: V. His Trojans compiled a fine record of six wins and two losses, with a 6-l record in the Twin Valley for second place. After losing to Mt. Pleasant, 27-O, in their opener, the Trojans edged Adrian, 21-18, and defeated Marshall, 13-6. Three Rivers then handed E.L. a 20-O setback in the homecoming game at Britton Field., Following that loss there was no stopping the Blue and White aggregation as they shutout Albion, 14-O, murdered Sturgis and Coldwater with scores of 39-'7 and 32-6, respectively, and conquered B.C. Lakeview, 26-6, in the season's finale. The '54 squad was paced by a fine group of seniors who will be greatly missed, Those graduating are Co-Captains Ken Slomick and Dernet Spanos, Ron Atkinson, Dick Beyer, Ferg Barton, Bruce Blakslee, Bruce Davis, Stu Foster, Tim Kraft, Ron Lustik, Greg Montgomery, Keith Mooar, ,Tohn Schell and Tony Angel. They finished third in Twin Valley play with a 9-5 mark behind Adrian and Battle Creek Lakeview, who tied for first with an ll-3 record. Led throughout the season by Co -Captains Ferg Barton and Greg Montgomery, the cagers opened the season with a convincing 58-42 victory over Sturgis. EL then fell before a well-balanced Battle Creek squad, 60-57. This heart-breaking defeat in the final moments to Lakeview seemed to set a pattern for the Blue and White aggregation as they lost one ball game by one point, four tilts by three slim points, and another game by five points. Only Adrian handed the Trojans a decisive defeat, 58-3. lt was the low spot of the season for the East Lansingsquad. Ahighspot of the season was the sensational play of Freshman Art Brandstatter. Seniors who played their last game for East Lansing are Barton, Montgomery, Dave McCaffree, Amie Nedelman, and Stu Foster. The Trojans started the season by taking it on the chin from a strong Lansing Eastern squad. The Quakers handed EL a 32-11 defeat. They came back from this set-back to defeat Lansing Everett in a real thriller, 26-24. A week later the Vikings turned the tables on the matmen by handing them a heartbreaking 28-23 decision. EL then dropped their next two meets. Eastern downed the Trojans for the second time, 37-11, and Cranbrook dropped the crew by the same count. With two dual meets left on the slate plus the state tournament, the grapplers are looking to better things. A strong blow to East Lansing's state showing came when their fine A.A.U. Champion, Bruce Blakeslee, fractured his ankle while skiing. Graduation will take its toll on the wrestlers as Blakeslee, Ken Osborn, Dave Price, Keith Moore, Ron Atkinson, Pete Skamser, and Denny Davis are all Seniors. f L. ,,,, ,... , V 1 , QA mlgbl. Except for their brilliant finish, it was rather a disappointing season for Coach Sullivan and his boys. With Arnie Nedelman and Bob Per ry heading the list of returning lettermen, things looked bright for Coach Sullivan. The golfers opened the season on the right foot when they stroked their way to an easy, 340-365, victory over Battle Creek Lakeview. They followed that victory with one over Marshall, 342-376. Three Rivers then dropped East Lansing from the ranks of the undefeated by a very close 322-331 count. The Trojans then defeated Battle Creek again in a snow storm, 343-361, split with Lansing Eastern, and toppled Marshall for the second time. The Trojans played their worst golf of the season as they finished a dismal fifth in the Twin-Valley Championship held at Three Rivers, Their final spurt near the close of the season turned a mediocre year into a great one. Nedelman, in his third year of varsity golf, also finished the season in fine style. He fired a sizzling 75 in the City Meet: and, with the help of Bob Perry's 77, the linksmen hung up a 320, their finest score in more than six years. The golfers fired a 347 at Grand Rapids Blythfield to cop the regional crown. Nedelman also was medalist with a 79. At the state high school meet, the Trojans turned in a neat 336 to finish in the runner -up spot behind Detroit Redford Union. Nedelman became the state high school champion when he blistered a 76 over the rugged River layout to take the medalist honors. With Nedelman, John Abbott, the reliable old vet, and two promising newcomers, the Klewicki Twins, all returning, the Trojan golfers are looking forward to another fine season. With seniors Bob Perry and Fred Wagner taking leave, it seems as though the mashiemen have lost a little something. Their services and great golf talent will never be forgotten, t 2 f 4.51 5'-Ms, 2? Under the helm of Gus Ganakas, nothing seemed to go right for the baseball crew. The Trojans dropped all eight games of the season. They opened the fold on the wrong foot when they ran into an 8-1 spanking from a solid Eastern nine. The Blue and White aggregation dropped their second game of the young season to the Wildcats from Three Rivers, 9-6. Six errors and sloppy base rtmning cost E. L. the ball game, On April 27, the Trojans lost their second league encounter to Marshall in a pitcher's duel, 2-0. They then journeyed to Adrian where the Maples handed E. L. their fourth straight setback of the season, 5-2. The Coldwater Cardinals pushed East Lansing further into the Twin Valley cellar when they nosed out the Trojans, 12-9. Ahead-on collision with league-leadingBattle Creek Lakeview handed the baseballers their sixth defeat of the campaign, 7-4. The Trojans jumped off to a quick 3-1 lead in the first inning but soon folded. E. L. then fell before Sturgis, 6-5, in an extra inning thriller. To make the season a little more bitter, the Trojans ended the year-'s festivities as they were clobbered by Albion, 16-0. Bob Powell paced the down-trodden crew in batting, hitting a robust .333. Missing seniors will be Bob Powell, George Spanos, Bob Distel, and Steve La mphear. anslty tenm J, Hecko, D. McCaffree, M. Mickelson, D. Smith. I. Howell, C. Laughead, B. Assid, J. Gardner, B. They took first place in the Regional and third place in the Twin Valley tournaments. The Trojans dropped their opening match to Lansing Eastern, 5-2. Then they defeated Adrian, 5-2, lost to Owosso and Midland, 6-1 and 4-3, respectively, and avenged the earlier set- back to Eastern by edging the Quakers, 4-3. In the remaining contests E.L.l-l.S. whipped Lake- view, 5-2, were stopped by Owosso again, 5-2, and rolled over Lansing Sexton, 6-1. E.L.'s netmen, with Stan Drobac as their new coach, showed steady improvement throughout the season which was climaxed by a team victory in the Regional tournament at Mt. Pleasant. The Trojans sewed up the tourney in the early rounds, but only Doug Smith and Mickey Mickelson, who took the doubles title, were able to reach the finals and thus qualify for the State tournament. Most of the lettermen are back for next season. Those lost by graduation were Tom Diet- rich, Jolui Howell, Ron Hill and Bud Young. ARSIII TZQACK fue A I at THIRD ROW: J. Grabow, B. Matthews, D. Sexton played the perfect host when they won the meet by a landslide with 83 points. On April 16, Everett de- feated the Trojans, '74-35, in E. L.'s first dual meet of the season. The Blue and White team then hit some rough sledding as they lost consecutive clashes with Charlotte and Howell, Strength in the dashes and relays brought the team's successful showings in the larger tournaments. They placed fifth at the Hastings Relays, fourth at the Albion Invitational, third in the Twin Valley, third at the Regional Meet, and ninth in the State finals. Bob Elliott and Ferg Barton were the team's outstanding point getters. Bob placed in the broad jump in all of the meets and also ran the 100 and 220, placing third in the 100 at the Twin Valley. Ferg nosed out Bob in the same Sprints at Charlotte and the Regionals, John Irrey Schell, hampered with injuries through- out most of the season, placed first in the 100 at the Twin-Valley and also hung up a new record time. Ot Derr, Ken Slotnick, Al Burmaster, and Barton ran the medley and placed first at the Regional. Slotnick also won the low hurdles at Howell. Chuck McCaffree and Stu Foster were other big guns for the Trojans in the pole vault and mile, respectively, .. -, X U 7 Q X Sir? fi? For five years Mr. MacDonald has served East Lansing in this capacity and has done a wonderful job coping with the problems that occur in the running of the five schools in our district. Alma College is Mr. MacDona1d's alma mater, and he took his graduate work at the Uni- versity of Michigan. Prior to his position in East Lansing, he was first a teacher and then assistant principal at Central High School in Bay City, Michigan. He went to Menominee where he was higi school principal and later superintendent, Among Mr. MacDonald's outside interests are the State College Club and the Kiwanis Club of East Lansing. He is also active in the National and State Superintendents Association and is Chairman of the State Curriculum Planning Committee. V J V MR. KINNEY The hand guiding the activities in East Lansing I-ligh School has been a firm and steady one. Mr. Kinney, our principal, has been with ELHS for five years. Although his job requires most of his attention, our principal finds time for such organizations as the Michigan Education Association, the Michigan Secondary School Association, and the Kiwanis Club of East Lansing. Mr. Kinney graduated from Albion Col- lege and finished his graduate work at Michigan State College. Before coming to East Lansing, he was a teacher, principal, and superintendent, respectively, in Concord, Michigan, and then was employed in the De- partment of Public Instruction in Lansing.
