This yearbook is dedicated to the purpose of recalling to our minds the fun, good-fellowship and wonderful times that we have shared. ln our freshman year we were led by Dennis Doolen, Dick Lyman, Audra Stark and Helen MaCris with Don Smith and Jim Krone on the Student Coun- cil. We got our social bearings early by giving the dance, Winter Wonderland. There were many boys out for sports teams, girls in G. A. A. and many ofus participated in various school clubs and organizations. Then came our sophomore year, and we didn't feel quite so new any more. Dennis Doolen, Barbara Werle, Clair Waters, and Helen MaCris headed the class with Don Smith and Doug Ousterhout on the Student Council, Aglain our class was well represented in the various sc ool clubs, organizations and sports teams. This year our big social event was the Soph. Prom Galaxy which accomplished much in adding money to our treasury. With two good years behind us, and our view getting broader we entered our Junior year. lack Peters, Jim Leigh, MadelynMcCray, and Mike Jones were the class officers with Don Smith, Bob Richardson, Doug Ousterhout and Dennis Doolen representing us on the Student Council. We had our eyes on the Senior trip when we chose Mr. Barry's Etching as our Junior play and gave the annual J-Hop, Carousel in which our class made history by actually making money on the dance. The school saw many Juniors in Band and Or- chestra, in clubs and on sports teams. ' At the end of the year weqgave the Junior- Senior banquet complete with goo food and enter- tainment. And then the climax to our wonderful high school years: we were Seniors! Our Senior year was not easy. ln order to go on our much looked-forward to Senior trip we had to dig in and make money fast and we needed a leader to lead us. ln the elections Jim Hayhoe was elected president, with Mike Jones, Cynthia Drew and Joe Robert helping him with the class. Dennis Doolen, Barbara Werle, Dick Lyman, Audra Stark and Doug Ousterhout helped the president of the student council, Don Smith in governing the student boyd, Miss Stolphlet and Mr. Pulley our class sponsors kept us going in the right direction and gave help when we needed it. Many of ou.r class were members ofthe foot- ball, basektball, wrestling and track teams as well as the Band, Orchestra, G.A. A. and our other school organizations. Nancy Irwin and Lu Voorheis were the two varsity cheerleaders who helped lead the spectators cheer our teams to victory. Our Senior play, The Hill Between , was excellently cast and was directed by Mr. Richard. There were many other Senior activities including the paper drive, rummage sale and the ill-fated Turkey Trample which was turned into a highly successful, Sock Hop. s Just a while ajgo we set out on our Senior trip. We returned very tire but happy and filled with mem- ories of the cruise. Then finally the Senior Prom, Junior-Senior banquet, Baccalaureate and now graduation complet- ing our Senior Year. We have gone well along the road toward ful- filling our Motto, The higher we rise the broader the view, QQQQQ ., ww, C' l li 'V iew 5 ' , Q? ' x K ff ? .xii semon play The Hill Between , a folk drama, was chosen for the senior play which was presented Nov. 14. The principal characters were Brent Sanders, a doctor, played by Jim Leigh, his Wife, Anna, played by Delores Dedrel. Julie Robbins and her father, Paw Robbins, were played by Ba Werle and Mike Jones respectively. Dick Rood was Larz Higgins, a mountain boy. Ellen Sanders, played by Mary Grace Chruchill, was Brent's sister, John Crouse played the part of Hank Allen. Guests at a country square dance were played by Tom Masters, Gary Dietrich, Karol Miller, Rosanne Dietrich, Julie Hicks, Dick Weber, Ianel Plankell, Valerie Ludwig, Ed Longnecker, Doug Ousterhout. Pat Moynihan was student director and Buzz Lake, student producer. The play told about a city doctor, Brent Sanders, who returned to his home in the southern hills and took his lovely wife, Anna, with him. The mountain people were dazzled by the city woman, and Larz Higgins even thought he fell in love with her, but she could not adjust herself to the simple, rustic way of life. It was there that Brent realized that his place as a doctor was in the country with his own people, and Anna returned to her way of life in the city. www -Hmm Q x ww Wm .NN ,f A+ X W w up Q-.gzfj 'x '23- 1 Q J.. .Mm.uuMmM ? Barbara Folkers filled this position with help from Susie Montgomery as vice -president, Susan Powers as secretary, and Mary Jean Campbell as treasurer. Cathie Quick and Todd Reuling repre- sented the class in the student council. In repetition of last year, ten people were appointed to represent the five sections of the eighth orade. nj 8-1 Ruth Kiefer and Brent Richards 8-2 Pat Smith and Terry Schram 8-3 Dorothy Emig and Eddie Foster 8 -4 Suzanne Newman I and Justin Zinn 8-5 Judy Hauer and John Cowden With the help of these people, the officers planned the year's activities. Both of the class parties were a huge success. It was at the Harvest Hop' in October when the sport-shirt and slacks, and the skirts and sweaters waltzed merrily around the pumpkins and cornstalks. Memories of a light and gay May Dance will also be cherished by all. With the help of the class advisors, Mr. Worden and Mr. Dexter, everything went along smoothly and we can truly say it has been a wonderful year for the class of 57. -f an-. 5 . -'owl gy f 'UT' Torn Amiss X'J'7s Yyhm, .lf or 9' T Nr Rose Mary Blakeslee it ,V- EX s., i di- Q. -. , 4 A 5 ' Qix Mary W Campbell ,- I 1: 3 Donna Cowan .. az ,,q I - aft f A . To help David, IenniferGreen was elected vice-president: lane McCar1n, secretary: John Mason, treasurerg ,lo Nedelman and Jerry Peters, Student Council representatives. In October, many Seventh Graders spent an exciting, but exhausting week at Clear Lake Camp. Most of their time there was spent in the study of nature and Science, but there were always parties in the evening. Since it was election year, the Seventh and Eighth grades combined in having a mock election to give them a better understanding of our nation. The highlight of the year was the Christmas party. It was a lot of fun and very successful all the way from the planning to the clean-up. To help the class of 58 were the class ad- visors, Mr. Budde, Mr. Hazard, and Mr. Tanzer. The 1952 football season turned out to be a better season than was expected. Due to a relatively small team it was not predicted that the Trojan squad would do so well. Coach Pat Pepler started the team with a non-conference tilt with Mt. Pleasant, one of the top teams in the state the year before. The Trojans beat the Mt. Pleasant Oilers by a score of 18-6. We played our first Twin- Valley game at Marshall. Steve Lamphear made the only T. D. of the game by taking a screen pass from Ken Slotnick. Against Adrian, East Lansing rolled up 440 yds. from scrimmage, but only to tie 18-18. They then joumeyed to Albion to take a hard fought game by a score of 19-7. East Lansing next took an easy victory over Coldwater at Coldwater. The Trojans racked up another victory with a score of 26-7. East Lansing took a breather the next week by going over to non-conference Brighton. East Lansing got quite a scare when Brighton scored on the first play of the game. The Trojans quickly rebounded to win by a score of 27-6. The following week the Trojans played their hardest game of the year. It was played against Lakeview, top team in the state and as a result of the game Twin-Valley Champions. Dick Lyman was named to the Twin Valley defensive team while Guard Don Smith, End Doug Davidson Tackle George Spanos, and Backs Ken Slotnick and Steve Lamphear received honorable mention. East Lansing ended up in second place with a conference record of 4 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. Z - ,Vai P X' 9 fr KW? The team pushed 3 games into overtime but won only one of these. In the whole season they won 7 and lost S. The total number of points scored was 775. The squad got off to a good start as they opened the '53 season by defeating Everett 44-42 on the Viking court. Sturgis, in the first home game of the year, beat E. L. 56-51 as a late rally in the last quarter failed. The Trojans next went to Lakeview whom they beat 47-46. Chas. McCaffree sunk the shot that won the game. East Lansing won their third victory of the season against Coldwater, by a score of 58-50. The Wildcats of Three Rivers rolled over E.L. 68-42. Bob Riggs was high point man for this game. The Trojans third defeat ofthe season came from the Redskins of Marshall as they beat us 52-44. After losing two games in a row, the Trojans came back to whip Adrian 63-62 in an overtime. Charlie McCaffree held the scoring honors for this game with 18 points. The Trojans hit the road for the next two games. Theylost both of them. One was to Albion, the other rg Sturgis, The scores were 50-56 and 45-47. This was the Trojans second loss to Sturgis this year. On return- ing home the Trojans scored a 63-44 victory over Lakeview. This was the Trojans second win over the Spartans. In a return game the Coldwater Cardinals took revenge for a loss they suffered from us early in the season. They beat U5 63-57. Three Rivers High, a relatively new team on the Trojans schedule, found the E. L. netmen a little more deceptive as the Trojans rolled over the Wildcats 48-44. The third overtime of the season wasa home game with Marshall. E. L, lost this close game 55-58. They were defeated at Adrian 58-53 and knocked Over Albion 55-50. Thus the Trojans ended an average season. ARSITZY RESTZIIRQ The East Lansing wrestlers, under the fine direction of Coach Pat Sullivan won all but one of their matches. The one loss was to Class A Eastern. We regret to say that the Ceniad went to press before we could get the results of the state finals, but we know the boys will come out on top. The Trojan grapplers were in seven matches. The first match was with Sturgis, and the Trojans with traditional style won the first one, 35-5. They kept this style throughout almost the whole season. Next came Davison who fell to the Trojans by a score of 41-15. The Trojans were just beginning to roll. They hit Sturgis again for a 32-8 victory. Everett was next to feel the Trojan might. The grapplers beat them twice, once here 30-17 and again in Lansing 25-19. The only loss came from the Eastern reserves as they beat us 19-29 on our own mat. For the last match the Trojans bounced back and took Cranbrook 30-16. There were six returning lettermen this year. The graduating seniors are Bob Richardson, Denny Rosenbrook, Richard Weber and Charles Bowles. Prospects for the '54 squad look good as many men will be coming back next year. 1, ij, We k 1, W 7-V SN, 6. The Trojan Golfers, under the watchful eye of coach Pat Sullivan, placed 3rd, in both the Twin Valley and the Regionals competition. The Trojans placed lst. in the State Finals. East Lansing opened the golfing season with a bang, by defeating their lst. opponents. The scores of these matches were E. L, 356 - Lakeview 387, E. L. 365 - Marshall 384, and E. L. 357 - Howell 367, The Lakeview match, fourth in the season, came out as a tie 342-342. Marshall was the next team to face E. L. They were defeated 342 - 351. A fifth victory was attained from Howell in a return match with a score of 334 - 367. The last match was the only loss of the season, which was to Alma 351 - 338. The '53 prospects for the team look good as only 3 seniors graduated. They were Jim Tyler, Wade Stevens, and Bill Cowan, Returning members of the team are Bob Perry, John Abbott and Art Nedelmen. They won both the Twin Valley and Regional Championships. The Trojans were also runnersup in the State Finals. Julius Hanslovsky and Dave Brogan took the honor of State Doubles Champions. East Lansing started the season with 3 away matches. In these they cut down Eastern 7-O and took both Lakeview and Hamtranic 4-3. Upon returning home the Trojans suffered their first defeat in a re- turn match with Hamtramick. The next match showed the Trojans still powerful as they beat Adrian 7-O, And then home again to beat Owosso 5-2. The next two matches Midland here and Michigan State J. V. there were both lost by a 2-5 score. Sexton and Lakeview were the next two teams to taste defeat at the hands of the Trojans by scores of 4-3 and 5-2. Ina return match at Owosso the Trojans were handed their 4th defeat by a score of 3-4. The last match of the season was at home with Sexton which was called because of rain and never finished. This left the Trojan netmen with a record of 7 wins 4 losses and failed to finish 1. Dave Brogan, Julius Hanslovsky, Jim Beachem and Jim Pocock are the four graduating seniors. Although the loss of these four key men will weaken the team the prospects for the 1953 Team look very good as the remaining Varsity Team: Don Smith, Tom Masters, Jim Leigh, Dick Hanna, Joe Robert and Jack Peters: is still very strong. And the reserve prospects are very good. Baseeall -, h ' X 51 XV, Q 2 Xl I J ' 1 LAN ' 7 X M-25 .. - P35 A 1' S f . .1 I. N ,Y X inf is lk 1 1 xr . if D , f'! ir sh. FIRST ROW: l. tor. C. Bowles, D. Baseball - 1952 Twin Valley Champions Baseball - A game played with a bat and a ball on a field containing an infield and an outfield. The diamond has four bases at its corners, which mark the course that a batter must take in order to make a run. There are two sides of nine men each. The 52 Baseball team, under the fine direction of coach Pat Peppler, had little use for this definition be- cause they knew what they were doing. And proved it by coming up with the Twin Valley Championship and a very perfect season. The team won 9 games out of it. Both losses were to class A Eastern. Two of the wins were over the Sexton 5-A Champions. The Trojan hat-swingers started the season with an away victory over Charlotte by a score of 24- 12. Next game the only two defeats of the season, they were both handed to .Ea st Lansing by Eastern on scores of 2-3 and 4-7. IackWenner pitched a 12-1 away victory over Albion as the Trojans made their comeback. The next game, also away, was with Adrian, the Trojans won 19-1. Marshall was next to feel the power of the Trojans as Wenner again pitched a Victory with a socre of 8-2. Big Sexton made the Trojans dig in and work to put one run across the plate. The one run though, was enough as E. L. won 1-O. A home game against Coldwater proved to be an interesting game as the Trojans edged by with a 2-1 victory over this tough Twin Valley team. Lakeview and Sturgis, both Twin Valley teams found E, L. hitting and pitching too much for them as we defeated them both 4-1 and 5-O respectfully, Both were home games. In a return game with the 5-A Champions of Sexton, Coach Pepplers bat Swingers proved that their first win was not luck. They won 4-1. The 1953 prospects look good as there is a strong reserve team worming up, Also there are four returning letter men, Denny Rosenbrook, Dick Lyman, Steve Lamphere, and Ken Slotnick. The graduating seniors were Bill, Dan Hicks, Don Harden, Jerry Fenner, Mike Wallace and Jack Wenner. ARSIIY TRACK M- X S rv- THIRD ROW: D. Davidson, I. Sherman, P. Wood, I. Coach Linn Adams coached his last year of track at East Lansing. His thin clads came out last in all of the dual meets and the Twin Valley track meet, The dual meet records are as follows: East Lansing 32 - Everett 77, East Lansing 43 112 - Howell 65 lf2, East Lansing 40 - Charlotte 69, East Lansing 33 lf? - Marshall 75 112. The records for all other track meets were: Albion Invitational B3 1X2 pts. - 12th place, Hastings Relay 1 pt. - 13th place, Twin Valley 13 pts. - 7th place, Regionals 16 1X2 pts. - 4th place. ln the State Track Meet, held in Ann Arbor, Lee Staser ran a fourth place in the second section of the 880 yd. run. The sprint medley relay team qualified for the state meet, but failed to place. Those, running were Bob Riggs, Buddy Young, John Ketchtun, Dick Riggs. Lee Staser was the outstanding runner of the year. He was the only one to get a first place in the Twin Valley Meet and the Regionals. He won the 880 yd. run in these meets. There are quite a few sophomores and freshmen coming up and within a few years the track teams should be getting up to where they used to be. The new track coach for 1953 is Mr. Tinkle.
