Riehard with the help of Patti Tossy. assistant director, and Bill Cowan, assistant producer. The Curious Savage, a three aet eoxn- edy, takes place at S'I'he Cloistersf' a private rest home. Mrs. Savage, by Car- leen Hedlund, has been put in the rest home by her three children-Senator Titus Savage, Carl Napoli: Judge Samuel Savage, Wade Stevens, and Lily Belle Sav- age, joleen Treaster. Mrs. Savage has a large sum of money with whieh she wants to build a memorial to her dead husband. Other guests at i'The Cloistersn are Fairy May, Rornayne lVagner, who must be told every day that she is loved: Florenee, Carol Sorber, who thinks a doll is her dead son, John Thomas CMike Riehardl: Hannibal, jim Peters, who thinks he can play the violin, Mrs. Paddy, Diane Kie- pert, who gave up eleetrieity for Lent. and Jeffery, Ken Pieree, who thinks his face was badly searred when he was in the war. All these guests beeome fast friends of Mrs. Savage. The stafT mem- bers of the rest home are Miss Wilhelmina, played by Carrie Kimber, and Dr. Em- mett, played by Tom Reed. They are also working for Mrs. Savage's welfare. The plot was a very clever one revolving around the ehildren's trying to get Mrs. Savagc-'s money. It has a happy ending with Mrs. Savage Hnally leaving the rest home in full charge of her money. The play was a hard one to aet out and the east did an excellent piece of work. The Curious Savage was a thoroughly enjoyed play. Mills, M. Quill, C. Dexter, Miss Findley. Standing: T. Mcllrath. Twnm Every two weeks on Friday at 2:40, in the hands of all activity ticket holders, the Trojan Trumpet reaches its destination carrying all the news of the school on its four pages. Some readers turn to the sports section: others look for the special humor eolumnsg still others seek to find their names in print. Eventually all four sides are read over and over. lt's a great moment-the arrival of the school paper on Friday. The five editors of the paper are appointed by the sponsors upon the recommendations of the out- going staff. Reporters, eopyreaders, proofreaders, typists, and other positions on the staff are Hlled in the fall by volunteers from grades seven through twelve. This year's editorial staff was headed by Charles Dexter and Anne Mills. Filling the news editor position was Mary Alice Quill while the feature Tuunpet editor was Joleen Treaster. Covering the sports was John Doyle, and taking care of junior high events was Tom Mcllrath. Bob Matthews was head of the photography department. The work of these editors was carried out under the leader- ship and advice of Miss Cuff and Miss Findley. Reporters hustled around for special news and the rest of the staff kept busy getting each issue into print. To help defray the expense of putting pictures in the paper, the entire staff sponsored a frost bite sale. In the fall of 1944 the Trumpet was granted a charter from the Executive Council of Quill and Scroll, an international journalism society for high school students. The following spring a chapter of Quill and Scroll was established. Each year seniors who have done outstanding work in journalism are initiated into this society and receive the Quill and Scroll key in the Senior Awards Assembly. Every member looks forward to its many activities and every student enjoys its performances. Heading the band this year was Bill Clifford, presidentg Marilyn Olds, vice-president: Mary Grace Churchill, secretaryg Marilyn Jones, treas- urer, and Matie Lu Thorpe, librarian. Since the band has many activities and projects, these mem- bers are kept busy organizing and taking care of the band's business affairs. This year the band provided half-time enter- tainment at all the home football games, with such shows as Memories, Radio Commercials. Life Sketch of the Class of '52,'l and uThe Band's Tribute to the Coaches and Dads. They also made a trip to an away game, Lakeview. What would the pep assemblies be like without the jolly pep-band, one of the branches of this marching band? During the Christmas vacation the band was still at work, for they played at the Michigan State College basketball games. They took this as a great opportunity as they had an audience of many thousands of people. The band also gave a number of concerts, one for an exchange assembly at Charlotte High Schoolg another, the Band and Orchestra Concert of lNIarch. Still further activities of the band in- cluded the music festivals, which the band at- tended as a whole. Individual members attended the solo and ensemble festivals. The band played for the graduation exercises. These activities and many others made up the band's busy schedule. The band has done much for the spirit. welfare. and reputation of East Lansing High School and deserves much credit for all the work and effort necessary to produce the 1951-52 East Lansing High School Band. Swine 6-zcheslea With the valuable help and assistance of the director, Mr. Snook, the orchestra rose to new heights of fame and recognition since its organiza- tion in 1923. The orchestra began its eventful season with a Christmas concert presented with the chorus and speech department for the Mothers and Dads Club on December I8 and for the students on the following afternoon in an assembly. On March 16 they participated in the annual Band and Orches- tra Concert, each group contributing its share of entertainment. During this performance the or- chestra members demonstrated their skill in play- ing a varied program of musical compositions which displayed their true ability in the produc- tion of fine tone, technique, interpretation. and ensemble. Their schedule called for participation in the Biichigan School Band and Orchestra Com- petition Festivals, starting in March. They then went right to work for the school operetta given in conjunction with the chorus on May 8, 9, and IO. Also in May a joint exchange concert was in the offing with the Ottawa Hills High School Orchestra in Grand Rapids. In addition to the above, members of the string section participated in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Solo and Ensemble Festivals and various community programs. The orchestra also played an all-school assembly and presented appreciation programs throughout the elementary schools. During al school hour every day the string sec- tion of the orchestra met and practiced. Then, on Tuesday evenings the entire orchestra assembled for their only full orchestra rehearsal each week. The orchestra's skill was achieved through hard work and diligent practice, but it led to a master- ful, accomplished East Lansing High School Or- chestra. Hamish Baud This year's Junior High Band was comprised of thirty-eight members who were ably directed by hir. Snook. The band gave one concert during the year in a junior high program presented for the Mothers and Dads Club on an April evening. This program also included the junior high vocal departments. The musicians showed much talcnt throughout their performance and gave evidence of great promise in becoming a performing concert en- semble. Although the junior band's activities were not extensive, they demonstrated such high abili- ties that work is in progress for turning it into a miniature senior band with more scheduled pro- grams and marching during a football game half- time. The junior band is continually growing and is being built into a fine organization for the young musicians in East Lansing High School. uniwv Gwhestw For the first time in a number of years a junior high orchestra was organized and was composed of thirty-two members. This group showed fine abili- ties in various techniques adding to the final prod- uct of musical skill. It offered the young musicians of East Lansing High a chance to meet together and learn the basic fundamentals practiced by concert and professional orchestras, as it was run in the same manner as the senior high orches- tra. Mr. John Cooley expertly handled the coaching and directing of the organization. The orchestra gave a splendid performance for the school in the all junior high music concert of May 21. Other junior high musical organizations also participated in this program. The junior high orchestra succeeded in develop- ing a high degree of musical dexterity during the past year. Chews One of the largest and most enjoyable organi- zations of East Lansing High is our vocal music department composed of the Choir, Girls' Chorus, and Boys' Glee Club, all under the able baton of Mr. Cockrell. The choir serves as an ambassador of our school to the community at large where small or medium sized groups are appropriate. The Girls' chorus sang an inspiring Christmas program for the Farm Stockholders' dinner and performed for several East Lansing women's clubs. Accompanists for the Girls' Chorus were Betty Mussclman and Nancy Irwin: for the Boys' Glee Club was Alan Strelzoff. The elite of the vocal groups. the choir, also had some challenging engagements during the year- the VVomen's Club of Peoples Church, the A. A. U. In the spirit of Thanksgiving and the American tradi- tion the choir presented A Voice of Singing, an assembly featuring a variety of numbers from the solemnity of Bach to such bits of Americana as a SHOWBOAT medley. The girls' chorus, too, pre- sented an assembly. When the choirs combine with the orchestra to produce one spectacular piece of entertainment. however, our hallowed halls ring with the sound of it weeks in advance and its echoes linger in our memory long after. There were two such events this year: one was the Christmas program and the other was the operetta. The Christmas assembly, uniting the choir with the chorus, glee club, and orchestra brought out both the beauty of the reli- Chews gious spirit of Christmas and the gaiety of the secular attitude. Oh, it's a long, long time from May to Decem- ber, according to the song, but the days grow short when they are filled with rehearsals for the operetta. The superlative job done on both parts of the May program evidenced the hard practice behind it. The first part was a short modern American folk opera by Kurt lVeill entitled, DOWN IN THE VALLEY. The second part was entitled a SYMPHONY OF SONG in which all forms and periods of choral music were pre- sented. The vocal music groups have given the school and community excellent entertainment and each member of the group has received a great deal from membership in the organization. mmf' f' Flfth Row Hanslovsln C Dexter C Napoh R Buxton E Crouse P Grernshlcld J Hcrmrk NIcDon'1ld Fourth Row D Bxmlow D Drthmcrs B Pomfll D Daudson P 'viachtel B Mead Thxrd Row Plankell S Coll ns P Stxlf-s L kc-ssler Johnston S Collxns Second Row E Wage: NI Dunn 'N Clark NI Landon K Nixller C Bergman First Row Mr Cockrcll Briaman D Case NI J Xdams 'N Cxrclc 'Ireastfr B Wheeler D Clanahan J Stewart haw 1 at QI , ll Q0 O IO I O IO I O 0 . life 'rw wh Fourth Row S Peterson D Dedrel J Ballantme L Lyons, D Daubert B Ryder M McColly J Beglck Thlrd Row M Faxrless E Vanderlslyde C Hess A Jones E Wagg K Drew B Rxggs Mrs Johnston N Foster Second Row M Tyler R Dletnch C Drew J EsdaleT Txmm D Neumann A Mxlls N Lundm J K ll C Y Fxrst Row B Bauer J Plankell V Ludwxg M Jones D Lyman D Rxggs B Werle A Stark an :flmutcan Cluli Led by the sponsor, Mrs Johnston the Pan Amerlcan Club had a profitable and pleasant year Basmg 1ts objectwes upon the good nelghbor pol 1cy the club trled to understand and appreclate the Spamsh speakmg people thc-1r 1 mguage thelr homes, thelr work and thexr pleasures The club meetmgs were held at noon every two weeks on Thursday Students of both first and second year Spamsh wx ere ehglble for membershlp After lunch together they played Spamsh games listened to lllustrated talks, or sang Spamsh songs In such ways thev learned the customs of the Spamsh speakmg folk At Christmas the Pan Amerlcan and French Clubs umted for one meetmg They enjoyed a vocabulary contest seemg who could glve the word m h1s language first Then each club sang xts carols Part of the officers were elected m the sprmg of 1951 Dlck Lyman, presldent, and 'Vfllse ones vlce presldent Later 1n the fall Barbara Werle was elected secretary and Dick Rxggs treasurer The Pan Amerxcan Club IS hopmg to mcrease lts membershlp agam next year and enlarge xts act1v1t1es as xt dxd 1n '51 '52 'fuuck The first meeting of the LeDejeuner was held last fall at the home of Carrie Kimber, who was this year's president. Some of the responsibilities undertaken during the year were the financing of the moving picture of the Adrian football game, selling of football season tickets and tickets to the football and bas- ketball banquets, providing cokes after the games for the opposing teams in football and basket- ball and keeping the trophy eases in presentable condition. Among the social entertainment for the club were a trip to the Detroit Lions-Los Angeles Rams football game, informal and formal initiation of new members, the annual Varsity Club hayride, and a trip to a Detroit baseball game. ln the future the club plans to do more to en- courage athletic hettcrment and participation in East Lansing High School. 9 l J -G V7 Third Row: Mrs. Cargill, P. Soon after this, F.H.A. began making plans for the Thanksgiving basket. This was taken to a needy family in Lansing. lt is an annual project of the club and one that is very worthy. Next the girls in the club made caramel apples and sold them after school. In December F.H.A. had another annual event. the Christmas party for ten needy children. They played games. had candy and coke to eat. and were given toys to take home. This party helped to make these ten children's lives a little happier. In the spring EH..-X. had a mother-daughter tea. The whole event was planned by the members. Also the entertainment was done by club members. This project helped prepare the girls for teas that they will no doubt attend at college and in later years of society. The F.H.A. Clubs from all over the state of Michigan have a convention with representatives from all the clubs. This convention took place at Michigan State College and the East Lansing club was well represented. They also sent representa- tives to the F.H.A. camp at Battle Creek. Having Miss Demorest for a sponsor was very en- tertaining as she told them of her many experi- ences in England. On one of these occasions she told of her experience as a teacher at a girls' school. Later she used the projector to show her snapshots and postcards of French and English architecture, country scenes, and people. One of the club members set the pattern for many of the succeeding meetings by showing the club how to make paper mache Halloween masks. Soon the club joined in on the idea and each per- Cluli son made one mask. The final part of this project was a colorful hall display of the finished masks. Some of the club's activities were tied up with the college. One very popular meeting was con- ducted by one of the teachers of ceramics. She gave a demonstration on the potter's wheel and fascinated the club with bowls and pitchers. The club broke up into smaller groups occasionally and have visited the art exhibits and the art films sponsored by the college. The Christmas party included a wrapping dem- onstration, bingo, refreshments, and group games. Some of the other projects during the year were selling frostbites and making posters for the clubs of the school and Percy Jones Hospital. Junior Engineering Training School, more com- monly known as the JETS Club, was very active in its second year of existence. The first project was a dance which they named Jets Jump. The money they made on this enabled them to carry out the rest of the year's projects. The club was sponsored by Mr. Sebeson and Dr. Harris from the engineering department at Michi- gan State College. The club membership had a sharp increase this year from eleven to thirty members. The members who headed the club were Charles Dexter, president, Jack Herrick, vice president, Jack Cruise, secretary-treasurer. During the year, tours were taken to Oldsmo- bile, the Water Works, Abram's Aerial Survey, and other places of interest to the club. Club members learned much from the tours. Many of the members did projects, such as making sketches, drawing maps, and designing. The two main requirements for membership in the JETS Club are a general interest in engineer- ing and a liking and capability for algebra. 5878 Glu Third Row: C. Dexter, D. Ousterhout, J. Roberts, J. The evening was brought to a climax by a hilarious initiation cere- mony following the dinner. The new members formed at orchestra upon the stage, and with a student conducting, read through some music which was absolutely new to them. The resulting cacophony provided everyone with some delight- ful entertainment. For members only was the restriction placed on their record sessions the demonstrations of conducting technique given by the members themselves, and the solo and group recitals given by members at their regular meet- ings. Their objective was to learn about and practice the job of efficiently planning, directing, and promoting activities of the student body. Every spring, elections for the next year's stu- dent council are held. Each representative is elected from, for, and by the students. Elected to head the council this year was Lee Staser as presi- dent. Dan Hicks was vice president, Matie Lu Thorpe, secretary, and ,lim Pocock, treasurer. Klr. Kinney and Miss Stophlet were the faculty ad- visors. The twenty-seven members of this year's coun- cil met each Monday during a different school hour. On the following lVednesday representatives reported what was done during that meeting to all homerooms. In this way the council got sugges- tions from the students and the students always knew what the council was doing about school affairs. One of student council's money making projects was the magazine sale. This was organized and carried through so well that the quota was reached and topped. Other projects were a paper drive and a concession booth at football games. The council used this money for financing the Alumni Ball, all paid assemblies, and the new eauncll bleachers for parents on the football field. It also sent the cheer leaders to all the away sports events and purchased uniforms for them: and it helps finance the Ceniad. It chartered buses to many away games, organ- ized pep assemblies, sold Trojan booster pins, placed football schedule posters in downtown stores, and ably handled the Homecoming details to show the East Lansing teams that they were right behind them all the way. Student council again published the student directory and expanded the Student Employment Bureau by gaining interest. It changed the quota- tions in the slogan sign and it decorated the halls of East Lansing to fit the Christmas season. It continued to choose the citizenship cup winners and engrave the cups for the school, but this year they started the new practice of giving special keys to the boy winners and pins to the girls. The council, as in past years, sent eight repre- sentatives to the Michigan High School Confer- ence on Citizenship at the University of Michigan. Here they learned of the activities of councils in other schools and brought back many new ideas. The student council is ever striving to better itself and conditions for the student body. This year council members have worked hard and should truly be commended for their many accom- plishments. SMH On the stage or in the hall, Taking pictures professional, Dave Tinker quickly clicked the shutter, Smiled and said, I'll take another. Next is smiling Nancy Bauer She liked to work at any hour, For she was editor at large And many a task did discharge. Bill Walling was chief editor of sportg And all the sports were his forte. jim Krone was his assistant able, But Krone, we think, was behind the table. Diane, Tay, and Madelyn Scraped the work from the bottom bin. No job too great, no job too small, Sorting and mounting, they helped with all And Betsey Richards and E. Armitage Helped to ill up every pageg Sometimes Marianne along with Carrie Worked and made the meetings merry. Through each page you catch a gleam Of our advisers, so serene.
