Introduction VVith the title of Senior of the High School we inherited the publica- tion of the ORACLE. As a consequence of too lofty aspirations on the part of previous editors, to make each GRACLE more attractive than the last, there was an unpleasant feature of this heritage. It was not alone the result of the failure of last year's class to meet their financial obli- gations, but the storm had been slowly gathering for several years and it was our fortune or misfortune, whichever you choose, to have this cloudburst fall upon us. When our thoughts turned for the first time toward this enterprise and the word ORACLE was heard again in school, we were called up on the carpet before the stern brow of the faculty and informed that there were a few things we must not do, chief among which was that of incurring more expense than we could meet. We agreed to the sugges- tion, thinking discretion the better part of valor, outwardly longing to clothe N in a better dress than '98 and inwardly rejoicing at this opportunity of laying any criticism we may arouse upon the broad shoulders of the faculty. It is our sincere hope that you will find in this volume something more than a fine display or expensive cover. We have tried to make it interesting and amusing, and to give you a true insight into the High School life as it is. We who have been entrusted with this work have put forth the best effort consistent with our other school duties. In its preparation we we have been prompted by none but the best impulses toward our school. We feel, however, that it is our duty to show forth things as they appear to us. But, believe us, if we do show forth any peculiarity, it does not arise from a spirit of personal injury, it is merely voicing the opinions of the High School students as we know them. We wish our classmates to see themselves as others see them and as they see others. If by chance we should be so unfortunate as to displease any one, do not wreak your vengence upon us. Remember that There are always two Johns-.lohn's John, and Thomas' John, and that our descrip- tions are given from our view of the sign board. Scan them, then, in a forgiving spirit, for from our standpoint you may gain a broader view.
